The point he is (from how I read it) trying to make is that we have TWO imperialistic states fighting over hegemony in Europe. While most people understand Russia is one, a lot of people don't understand USA is also one, that's why he is giving examples that (when they don't win control by economics or cultural means like they did in Europe) they are not sticking to those soft power but will also (like Russia) use military force and hybrid warfare. To understand which goals and motives these imperialistic states have is indeed relevant when thinking about how we can end this conflict. So when people in the west think USA is an ethical nation which helps Ukraine out of pure love and altruism and would never use military force like the evil Russians do, it is not to far fetched to remind people that the USA is indeed using similar forcefull methods when they think it will give them an advantage in their imperialistic endevours. This is not to say that its OK what Russia foes, because the USA also does it, this is not whataboutism, its relevant to understand the root causes and characters of the sides of this conflict. Everyone is with you on the topic that Russia is a facist nation which does horrible things and is clearly the aggressor that need to be stopped in this conflict. What I think OP is saying, is that when you think the USA is the Knight in white armour who is coming to save Ukraine, because USA is good and Russia is evil, you are naive and not grapsing the depth of geopolitics and therefore will advise for policy which will not actually make it better.
