Report directly to the authorities
100% agree with this. You reported the post in politicalmemes with this as the reason:
misinformation; these phone numbers route to a politically-aligned organization
What was the misinformation? The title says "[META] Where to call if you witness anyone intimidating or harassing at polling places." and the image clearly states who is behind it.
If you can state that they aren't there to help, and provide proof, I'll back down, but the fact that you came at it as "lies", that's a bold claim.
Again, contact authorities, but there's nothing wrong with having other avenues to assistance.
I agree, but every avenue at our disposal are forms. They will receive them, and I encourage that people DO report them to the FBI and Justice department. What I'm also saying is that those methods async, while this one is offering real-time assistance.
I would never say "don't notify the authorities". I am just saying that if you can put some weight behind your report and get it resolved while you are there, that's a good thing too.
You assuming that because they are a political org, they will play partisan politics, so to ignore them out-of-hand makes me wonder what you would do in their position.
Not all people are evil, and again, I'm not saying not to report to the proper authorities. I'm just saying that reporting to the proper authorities may take weeks or months, where this may help you in minutes or hours - in time for the vote.
I called the top number (the "NATIONWIDE" number).
They were very prompt. I asked them if someone - regardless of political leaning - were to call, what they would actually do, and how this would be a better solution to other services like the ones listed by @[email protected].
One thing is there's no real-time solution available anywhere in the U.S., from what I can find, nor what they are aware of.
Next, when we call, they will route your call to the proper escalation path, depending on the nature of the call. This also means that if you're being intimidated, they will reach out to the law enforcement for your polling station (city/county/state as needed). This is regardless of your political leaning. They would be contacting the proper authorities on behalf of the Democratic National Support Hotline, which carries a bit of weight, as they do have an army of lawyers at their disposal, for if it's not resolved in a timely fashion.
I was on hold for a while to get a better understanding of how things worked, to see if this was, in fact, a valid and viable option.
Yes, it IS partisan org, but they state they will not play partisan politics with intimidation.
TL;DR: they are there to do something the government can't/won't - provide immediate resolution to voter intimidation regardless of your political leaning.

only the source instance (where you created your account) has your IP.
Sadly, I didn't. I live in Iowa. Just learned about "beggars night".
That's your decision. In my opinion, it means your not voting. Your line helps nobody.
I am doing something. I'm voting for the issues at my doorstep. I have a gay child, and a non-binary child. I have another that is autistic.
If Trump wins, there's a non-zero chance that my children will be in danger.
I'm also an advocate for the homeless (don't correct me. I used to be homeless, and we hate "unhoused"),.
I advocate for foster youth, a sector no politician cares about.
All you do is complain about one issue. There's scores of issues. Jill Stein isn't happening. Vote in reality, and for reproductive rights, non-cis rights, rights for the homeless, and for someone that will actually win.
I won't say a vote for Jill is a vote for Trump.
A vote for Jill is the same as not voting. I tell people that didn't vote "you don't vote, you don't have a right to bitch"
Hey. Moderator here. Your attack on their intelligence is a rule violation. Please either delete this comment, or update it so you're not insulting somebody. If you don't in 2 hours, I will be forced to delete your comment. If you continue down this path, you will receive a temporary ban.
Hey, mod here. I've removed 2 of your comments, because they were trolling. Please read the rules. The next time this happens, we will be giving you a temporary ban.
I agree. While I've seen some crazy shit, it's not hard for the GOP to plant shit while committing felonies.
Just check mod logs for "genocide". Many are those people
Aww. You think you matter to me. I'll forget you in a couple minutes. You'll still be mad.
Yet here you are. Complaining.
Personal attack. Guess you haven't read the rules. I'm not removing this, but other mods may.
It does make me more qualified. As a mod, I see some shit. Things you don't have to.
You said it better than I ever could
What a weird timeline

Springfield woman uses tracker to find stolen election signs
A woman named Laura McCaskill used an Apple AirTag to track down her stolen Harris/Walz campaign sign, which led her to a home in Nixa, Missouri. When confronted, the young man's mother admitted that the signs in the trunk of the car belonged to her son, who she described as "just an idiot."
The incident involved the theft of around 60 signs from various homes in the neighborhood. McCaskill and other residents plan to file police reports, and McCaskill expressed concern about the entitlement and lack of accountability shown by the young man and his mother. The document also discusses the legal implications of stealing campaign signs, referencing Missouri Statute 115.637 which classifies such actions as a misdemeanor offense.

MBFC bot
The news mod team has asked to no longer be a part of the project until we have a composite tool that polls multiple sources for a more balanced view.
It will take a few hours, but FOR NOW there won't be a bot giving reviews of the source.
The goal was simple: make it easier to show biased sources. This was to give you and the mods a better view of what we were looking at.
The mod team is in agreement: one source of truth isn't enough. We are working on a tool to give a composite score, from multiple sources, all open source.

Hey. This community is dead. Let's revive it! What do YOU want to see here?
I can't be the only poster, or this will stay dead.
New mod, new rules
Hey. I noticed that the only moderator for this community was banned a year ago, so I requested to take over.
I'm still working on the rules, the banner, and stuff, but one thing - going forward - I know will be a rule:
- No drama you are a part of. If you're in the thread, don't post it here.
Also, as with all moderators, I'm always looking for people to help out. If you're interested, let me know!
what's the best Lemmy android app for moderators?
Connect for Lemmy is my daily driver, but there aren't mod tools built in. For most of my moderation, it's either Alexandrite or REST calls.
Are there any native apps with good mod tools?
What would be the least impactful way of using time travel?
Started as a shower thought (literally in the shower), but decided to make it more open-ended.
My answer to this would be "watch future seasons of anime that I am waiting on".
I don't see how that could cause a huge ripple through time.
MEGA THREAD - Trump shot but safe, 2 others killed at PA rally
WHAT
- Former U.S. President Donald J. Trump was shot at a rally in PA. ---
TRUMPS STATEMENT
>“I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania. Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured. It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”

Political News
Hello fellow Lemmys. The mod team here at [email protected] has been in discussions about the best approach to ensure we stay unbiased with news during the U.S. Election Cycle.
While we can't say "don't point out flaws in candidates" - nor would we want to - we do believe that when you excessively post/comment/reply negative things in News about one person, instead of, say mixing it up about topics, this feels like you are using [email protected] as a propaganda machine.
While propaganda is a normal part of elections, by posting only one topic, about one person, you are abusing the NEWS community for politics, and this could even be seen as election interference. There are other communities that this would fit better.
Doing this will result in posts/comments being deleted (with the option to appeal, of course). Repeat offenders may see temporary bans. Keep doing after that, and you may reach our perma-ban list.
As of right now, this only apples to politics. We don't plan to extend this to other areas, but that will change as needed.
Former President Donald Trump's campaign and businesses have provided "significant financial benefits" to nine of the witnesses in his criminal cases, ProPublica reported Monday morning -- shrugging off a threatening cease-and-desist letter sent by Trump's attorney.
Former President Donald Trump's campaign and businesses have provided "Significant financial benefits" to nine of the witnesses in his criminal cases, ProPublica reported Monday morning - shrugging off a threatening cease-and-desist letter sent by Trump's attorney.
The detailed report by ProPublica's Robert Faturechi, Justin Elliott, and Alex Mierjeski describes how nine individuals who have been named as witnesses received benefits that included "Large raises from his campaign, severance packages, new jobs, and a grant of shares and cash from Trump's media company" from Trump's various campaign committees and businesses.
These benefits "Often came at delicate moments in the legal proceedings against Trump," said the report, highlighting one example of Trump aide Dan Scavino, who was given a "Plum position on the board of Trump's social media company, for example, got the seat after he was subpoenaed but before he testified." Other well-known names in Trump's circle mentioned in the article include campaign adviser Boris Epshteyn, campaign head Susie Wiles, lawyer Evan Corcoran, and former Trump Org CFO Allen Weisselberg.
Salary increases, bonuses, promotions, and other benefits, can be evidence of witness tampering, the ProPublica article explained, if prosecutors can show that these employment changes occurred separate from normal business operations and the "Perks or punishments were intended to influence testimony." Even if no new charges are brought against the former president who is now a convicted felon, the details of these benefits could be used by prosecutors in Trump's still-pending cases to "Undermine the credibility" of these witnesses if the defense calls them to provide testimony helpful to Trump.
The Trump Org and various campaign entities have, of course, denied that any wrongdoing took place, and denied that Trump had knowledge or direct involvement in compensation issues.
One former aide compared working for the Trump Organization, his large company, to "a small family business" where every employee "In some sense reports to Mr. Trump." Former aides have said Trump demands unwavering loyalty from subordinates, even when their duties require independence Trump's former campaign manager and former campaign adviser were convicted on federal witness tampering charges in 2018 and 2019.
Trump posted on social media that he had read about a Georgia politician who "Will be testifying before the Fulton County Grand Jury. He shouldn't." One witness has said publicly that, when he quit working for Trump in the midst of the classified documents criminal investigation, he was offered golf tournament tickets, a lawyer paid for by Trump and a new job that would have come with a raise.
