Novembre - Materia (2006) [progressive/atmospheric metal]
This is one of my favourite albums. It's a bit of an odd one out in Novembre's discography: it's generally a bit softer, it features mostly clean vocals, and it generally sounds quite upbeat.
The standout track for me is Jules: it balances a melodic tenderness with an outro that makes you want to headbang and cry out with joy all at the same time. The whole album gives me a distinctly summery vibe: lazy days, the feeling of life stretching out ahead of you... all the possibilities it brings.
This album will always hold a special place for me.
This features one of my favourite misheard lyrics: Give me a light beer!.
It's really good to see this. As a long-time metalhead who will never tolerate fascism and bigotry in this scene or anywhere else, I'm always enthused to see others push back against that bullshit too.
"sexual deviancy" aaah okay, you've shown us who you are now.
Who is the "you" in your statement? Who has done what, exactly, to threaten children in your view?
Oh wow I haven't thought about this band in years. Thanks for posting this!
You know it's okay to dress brightly, flamboyantly, dazzlingly and even fabulously too, right?
I first came across this band thanks to an animated video Fursy Teyssier (Les Discrets, Amesoeurs) made for one of their songs. I've loved them ever since.
Steve Vai recently said this album should be studied for its intensity and intricacy.
Oh wow I haven't heard this before. Thanks!
How do they rise up?
Agreed. I feel they're the band to have picked up the torch from Warning and carried on making raw, heartfelt doom.

Yeah the party really half-arsed that.
Huh, I get why the rule is in place but this sounds pretty borderline. It's not like she's in a position where she's likely to financially benefit from her councillor role.
Saaame
This is an incredible album.
Yeah there's an honesty in his voice that really resonates with me.
Anathema are one of my favourite ever bands. This entire album is immensely important to me.
The Seven Mile Journey - Passenger's Log, the Unity Fractions (2006)
A good friend put me onto the album this track is from last year, and I love it.
Boys Noize, the German DJ and producer, remixed the "Challengers" score for Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross and shares the story with us.

An interview with Alexander Ridha (Boys Noize) about the creation of his Challengers soundtrack mix.
This is probably my favourite Shape of Despair album, although there's stiff competition from Angels of Distress.
There isn't a track out of place on this album, and the song "The Distant Dream of Life" always gives me chills. I love that they included a re-recorded version of "Written in My Scars" at the end too.
Mourners Lament - Suffocating Hopes (2008) [death-doom]
I found out about this band through to Poema Arcanus, another Chilean death-doom band. They've got a great melancholic sound to them.

Some top quality death-doom from Chile.

I saw this posted to r/nin and had to share it here.
> Also known as 'Head Like A Hole (NMS 10 Sampler version)', this mix of 'Head Like A Hole' was exclusive to a TVT Records cassette sampler released for the 1989 New Music Seminar NMS 10 (credited as "The Nine Inch Nails"). This longer version is mixed by John Fryer before the release of Pretty Hate Machine (album version is mixed by Keith LeBlanc instead).
> It is an early, pre-album release mix and features several differences: the main snare sound is different, the breakdown after the second chorus is longer and has a more prominent synth percussion.
> Song Credits: > Co-Produced by: Flood, Trent Reznor > Mixed by: John Fryer > Track Length: 5:50
It's an interesting mix, there's a more prominent synth bassline during the chorus and I think the samples sit a bit higher too. I can see why the mix used on the album version won out though: the sharpness of the drums and guitars give the track a bit more energy and it's a great album opener.

I keep coming back to this song. One of my absolute favourites.
The star of "Late Night with the Devil" and the NIN frontman speak candidly about time wasted, their struggles with addiction, and the redemptive power of art.

Trent Reznor interviewing David Dastmalchian. It's a nice glimpse of where both people are at in their life.
