Am I the only one whose "shorts" feed is all basically softcore porn?
I almost never watch "shorts" but my suggestions for it seem to have an...uhhh...adult theme. I don't watch any such thing with YouTube. Does everyone see garbage like this?
Before anyone rails on OP too much let me tell you this. My shorts feed was full of tech stuff. Then one day I clicked on a hot girl and watched a few of the shorts. Big mistake. Now even though I'm not clicking on them again my feed looks like OPs.
I guess the lesson here is. Never click on these shorts ever if you don't want to get spammed by them.
Mine isn't like that but there can be a few reasons I'd guess at:
YouTube recommends you things other people in your household watch (which can extend to random people if your isp uses cnat and doesn't give you an individual ip).
This one is more of a guess, but I'd assume a lot of people would click on that content, so if you never watch shorts maybe their algorithm just gives you the default recommendations.
If you watch adult content without protecting your privacy it's most likely associated with your account in their recommendations.
Mine shows 90% videos from channels I've either subscribed to or at least watched before, and 10% random pop culture stuff.
Then again, I don't actually use YouTube very much, and if I come across a video on Lemmy or wherever I never open it with a logged-in browser. Maybe I've inadvertently gamed the system.
Youtube Shorts hasn't done this for me (I actually follow some creators that make shorts so it's usually them) but Facebook's version is infuriatingly just like this and also I can't get rid of them. Every time I see one I go to the dots and select "don't see any more of these" but they just keep showing up and it's always some girl doing a yoga pose in a bikini, camera decidedly pointed directly at her vagina.
It only seems to show me the same 15-20 shorts since they first started featuring shorts on the main page. They're relevant to what I watch, but they're all hella old and I've seen the ones that interest me already. IDK why it never updates.
Depends on whatever psychological profile google has created for you I guess. Currently mine is mostly about exotic guns, because I found that fascinating for a while. I don't own any guns and I am not a supporter of lax gun laws. But google does google things.
On my subscription page, it shows shorts from my subscribed channels. On my main page, it's girls in bikinis playing on a guitar, violin or drums. I wantch a lot of independent musicians doing instrumental covers, but I don't recall seeing any of them wearing skimpy clothing.
I guess it's sort of like facebook, to increase engagement. I stopped visiting there about a year ago, but I didn't close my account. I now get one friend recommendation daily, and it's always sexy looking girls I've never heard of. These sites register me as male, so they always combine my interests with sexy females, to entice me to spend more time there.
My YouTube is well-trained, but this is how my Instagram is. Didnât use it or follow anybody on it for years. Recently took to scrolling and watching funny dog videos on there. I was showing my GF a funny pupper and accidentally tapped the search loupe at the bottom. BOOM. Bouncing boobies and butts covered my screen. I just kind-of stared at it in disbelief, saying âWhat the hell?â She got a laugh out of it. I guess this is a big part of instagram now.
The algorithm makes sense to me, in that on my main PC I pretty much exclusively watch nerd shit on youtube. Tech stuff, 3D printing, machinery, motorcycles, that sort of thing. Youtube therefore probably assumes I am male, so in my Shorts feed seems to be comprised of about 90% boobies, and 10% clips about guns.
But then the algorithm doesn't make sense to me, because on my living room PC we pretty much exclusively watch cat videos, bird videos, and videos-for-cats (the ones with all birds and squirrels and stuff), How Ridiculous, and Gavin Free. The Shorts feed there is also roughly 90% boobies, but in fairness the remaining 10% appears to be cats.
(Neither instance is logged in to a Google account or anything.)
More of a you think, I think. My shorts feed mostly comedy stuff, DND stuff, art stuff, and music stuff. Well, and the odd Christian preacher, which I assume gets wrapped up with the atheism content I also see.
Honestly, I recently created a fake Facebook account and the first things to pop up in the "shorts" was all actual porn (soft but nudity and all) so unlike others I don't think this MUST be your own doing
I disabled shorts everywhere. Before I saw your post, I couldn't even recall YouTube having shorts.
Also, Google tracks your everything, not just your YouTube history. You likely use Google Search a lot for adult content. Even a VPN and browsing on incognito mode might not save you. They have lots of ways track you.
Never touch the YT homepage. Always went straight to Subscription tab and watch stuff you subscribe to or search for the stuff you want to watch yourself.
Also turn off watch history and web activity.
I'm just getting REAL tired of YT recommending these shit channels that have <300 views, <10 thumbs up, and yet have 20k+ subs and their just ripped videos from other sources with obviously AI generated text to voice.
The irony is if I had real control over the shorts I'd actually sometimes watch them. But currently YT is trying to force them on me, with no control over which shorts I watch.
Yup some days and its annoying. You click on one that you think will be genuinely interesting and if it has any woman being any level of attractive, your feed turn to thirst trap. I like woodworking and outdoors engineerinf Innocent stuff right?. Now I get the most handsome bearded athletic hunk lumberjack that keep posting log splitting videos. Took me a while to realize that it was not about that cool ax head or the wedge technic.
I think this stuff is high engagement content among a large subset of the population. So it gets recommended a lot.
Maybe if you watch videos with a niche that doesn't also draw in the same audience as the borderline porn stuff's, you will see less of these shorts. Alternatively, you can download a YouTube client that gives you a completely different interface for subscriptions and recommendations, or use an Invideous instance.
Bruh, fuck YouTube, and if you really have to use it use an alternative client. Grayjay has plugins for more apps but there are solely clients with YouTube no adds no shorts and newer with no games
I've watched of one clip of that "NPC girlfriend" or whatever. Now the recommendation is all that and softcore porn. Haven't watched porn on YouTube, that I remember. Maybe it's because I turned off all tracking I could it just goes with age and gender or something.
When I'm logged in, the few shorts they show me tend to be from channels I'm subscribed too. If I go to the homepage incognito (back when they still showed you stuff when you rejected their terms) it was mostly either shock value, expensive stuff, sexualised stuff, sports. So lowest common denominator stuff, I guess.
I get the "Fun fact!" guy, that sorta fat dude who apparently has a forge and a farm and runs a DnD campaign...? that one dude that critiques crap tool reviews and ends every video with "There you go!" and a channel that...over-explains the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers?
I don't get any tit bait which means I've either done something wrong or done something right.
I had the idea to start counting it as a "Thirst-trap BINGO" each time every single thumbnail for shorts recommendations had a half naked woman with her mouth slightly open. Turns out that it happened more than half the time, and the game quickly got boring.
I have never watched a single short on YouTube, so apparently it's just the default recommendations that are horny af.
Yeah lots of thirst traps. I have the big issue on FB shorts. I have to admit I've taken the bait and honestly it's not worse than anything else on my feed so whatever.
Mine is standup comedy, quick videos on how to use modern weapons, quick videos on how to use medieval weapons, FPS gamers doing crazy moves, and those guys who make love action shorts about video games.
My advice is stop giving thumbs up to the softcore porn.
I keep hiding these posts & they don't stop appearing... I wish I could tell Facebook I'm not a perpetually online horny teenager anymore. ÂŻâ \â _â (â ăâ )â _â /â ÂŻ
I donât generally use YouTube since I find it more frustrating than enjoyable or useful, but I occasionally follow links that look interesting. I had never paid attention to âshortsâ except they appeared extra annoying the one time I tried.
Sure enough, mine are similar. Oh well, Iâll continue ignoring them as mostly annoying
The funny part is that sometimes I play this little game to see how many videos it takes to fully pornify my home page and it doesn't work if you want it to be like that.
They are tracking you even in incognito with a VPN and even across services. People have been using these types of tools for a very long time and porn sites have been tracking people all the while. Basically your devices have enough unique attributes accessible through JavaScript API like make model, screen resolution, bluetooth radio capabilities like ble, connection speed, etc. Basically brute force every data point available in the API and use the results to build a profile to recognize you. Tools like https://modernizr.com/ while not exactly intended for this still make it easier.
I get loads of funny content, a lot of great female comedians on shorts at the moment and skit writers. A lot of brief science videos trying and often succeeding in tempting me down a rabbit hole. Then random stuff like rainbolt guessing the country in 0 01 seconds of a greyscale image, nilered showing how radioactive things are or how great they look exploding. Plus a few oddball bits that come from nowhere, and of course nerd girls thirsttrapping with golden era sci-fi themed science facts but not nearly as many as you'd think considering how quick I click on them.
Mine is like 50% vids from people I mildly dislike and 50% Vtubers. I think there is really just not very much good short content.
Edit: To clarify, I'm not anti-Vtuber, I'm just not convinced that a 30 second clip from a livestream counts as good short content. The only high quality shorts channels I'm aware of are Tom Bates (who produces Nigel and Marmalade, a series about a tiny wizard and his dog-horse best friend) and Natural Habitat Shorts (funny animations about anthro animals, based on real animal facts).
My facebook reels are worse than that - endless girls shaken their boobs and ass at me. Most of them look extremely fake and enhanced with AI to make everything bigger. Often there will be a split second scene in the clip (too short to be caught by the censorship system?) of something pornographic. Seems like most of the girls have an Onlyfans.
I don't watch porn or browse thirst traps on instagram or anything. It's nuts.
From the image, I have seen 3 of them on my youtube homepage.
It's such a distraction while you are browsing for videos... Recently I have been trying this extension to block off shorts. I think it works for the most part.
I was spammed with those when shorts started. It took forever but I finally don't have those suggested anymore. As someone else posted, once creators I follow started doing shorts, those appeared as suggestions and took over the feed.
