There you go little guy
  • I'm sorry driving isn't fun, it was never meant to be once we obliterated mass transit in the US. It's meant to get you to the destination, preferably safely.

You've never been in a fun car on a fun twisty back road. This is what driving should be, as we should not be dependent on driving to get everywhere.

  • California governor vetoes bill requiring speeding alerts in new cars
  • One road I drive on frequently is posted 25, but Google Maps thinks it's 55, which is a silly speed for that road with many turnouts. Meanwhile, the next road over, is also 25 and Google sees that one correctly, but going 55 on that road is nearly natural, with nothing but the road and usually green traffic lights every quarter mile.

  • How do you lure Linux users to a comment section?
  • This was seriously the reason why I switched from a majority Windows user to a majority Linux user. From 2017-2023, Microsoft was doing the usual bad things, but they were not adding any new appalling crap and at least making some effort in improving things (W11 release nonwithstanding).

  • To Americans: How far apart is everything in the US?
  • Where my friend lives, in a typical American suburb:

    • To the nearest convenience store: 1.5km
    • To the nearest chain supermarket: 1.5km
    • To the bus stop: >1km
    • To the nearest park: 400m
    • To the nearest big supermarket: 1.5km (they're all the same thing lol)
    • To the nearest library: 1.4km
    • To the nearest train station: 1.7km

(These feel like clues to Jet Lag: the Game - Hide and Seek...)

  • Thinking of upgrading to a ZX6R or a S1000RR could use some advise.
  • First, you should try to test ride a supersport bike before you buy one. The seating position is quite aggressive, and going on longer road trips will be quite challenging on a bike like that.

Second, upgrading from an A2 Bike to a 1000cc superbike is a huge jump in power, upgrading to a 600cc is wiser. They are still really fast up to felony speeds. And the S1000RR is one of the more expensive and crazy versions of these bikes.

However, I'm not in a position to force major purchases on you. If you take a test ride and you really like the S1000RR, go ahead (even if it isn't very wise). I'd still recommend the ZX6R more.

  • An old comic still relevant
  • That's why I keep advising people to buy used, and to be able to pay for any expensive toy fully in cash. It saves so much depreciation money, and causes you to not go into debt over an expensive toy.

  • About that...
  • Think about why you joined Lemmy. Reddit has been getting greedier and greedier, so you left to a place where the grass is greener. The same thing is true with Windows and Linux (and Linux is also much more big and mature than Lemmy). It attracts the same kind of people.

  • Gacha games are out of control. Gambling shouldn't be so widespread
  • The interesting thing is that although I've almost never spent money on a gacha system and haven't played much gacha systems recently, my brain subconsciously craved for more but in a safer way.

That's why I created the JavaScript weighted playlist for myself: A random selection of songs from my music library where some songs play (much) more than others. Getting a super rare song is akin to getting a top tier drop. Additionally, the playback rate is randomized to a normal distribution, giving the tiny chance that a rare song can play with a wild playback rate. And if that wasn't enough, some Geometry Dash related songs can randomly skip to the next song, simulating watching someone try to beat some demon level.

I've created a skinner box for my brain that sometimes causes me to waste hours just clicking on the "next song" button to see what shows up next. My wallet was not harmed in the process (although it might soon be because I want it to work on a portable device, but that money would go to some niche open source hardware thing rather than a greedy gacha publisher).

  • There's a reason we aren't as harsh on the Steam Deck. Actually, a couple.
  • No joke, I'm tempted to buy a Steam Deck (or true Linux phone) because... It can run a local HTML/CSS/JS app on a browser with filesystem access and audio support. This is the power of having an OS that is not locked down.

Speaking of which, what would you recommend for me to run a local HTML/CSS/JS app on a browser with filesystem access and audio support? (No, Android is too locked down to meet that spec) Other required specs:

    • Portable: Can fit in a pocket
    • 16GB or more usable storage
    • Bluetooth support
    • Ideally low-cost
  • PS5 Pro Equivalent Build?
  • One thing to add is that you should factor in the costs of the games and other console BS. If you want to use a physical cartridge, you have to pay another $80. Then, most games are $70. There is a subscription for online content. These costs can easily go over $1000 in total, and remember a PC can be used for more than just gaming. In some cases, it can be fair to compare a $1000-$1200 PC to this $700 console.

  • What's your least favourite thing about your smartphone
  • Update: I got node.js to do a simple program. Now, I want it to run a much larger program involving playing audio.

Update 2: I can't get node.js to play any audio, and I cannot install the non dependencies for some reason.

  • My new ride: A 2012 Triumph Street Triple R

It's been a good 3500 miles with the GZ250, but I've been itching for more power and better cornering potential. Also, I somehow spent $1000 in maintenance in 10 months for a "beginner" bike. So, I sold my GZ250 to buy this crazy motorcycle. I always wanted a high-revving inline-3 engine, and this bike was a good deal.

What a difference it is! I went from being slower than 99% of cars on the road to faster than 99% of cars on the road. That and the difference in ergonomics make it feel like my first time riding again because I feel like a noob again.

It pulls so crazy hard in lower gears that I don't think I've ever gave it full throttle below 4th gear, and it sounds amazing doing so. And whenever I take a corner, I consistently underestimate just how much I can lean, so I go almost unsatisfyingly slow, and the bike seems to say, "c'mon, chicken. Believe in me. You could've gone way faster than that." I hope to do a track day to remedy this mismatch between me and my motorcycle.

How to transfer files to iPad from PC privately?

This is the #1 reason why I don't buy Apple anymore. But if there was an easy private way, I'd be open to getting Apple products again.

I simply want to transfer files from my PC to my iPad without any companies collecting info about the files, such as legally acquired mp3 files that dumb corporations will think are pirated.

What are the ways to do this?

Why does DRM consume vast system resources even though we have TPM, Pluton, etc.

I've seen many instances of some software having DRM that significantly degrades the performance of the software, or worse, the performance of the entire OS due to heavy background tasks. Prime examples include Denuvo and all those Adobe background processes. Why can't they just simply use the TPM or the other 5 security chips embedded into the CPU so that they don't bloat the system?

This might be a bit different than what usually gets posted here but I found this on Nebula and its perhaps my favorite video I've seen on the platform yet. You can also watch it on YouTube (strangely YT didn't suggest it to me despite it being right up my alley).

I absolutely love this idea of trying to do long distance riding with little e-bikes and e-scooters, or basically anything on 2 (or just 1???) wheels.

Thinking of getting into self hosting but I'm a complete noob

I think of myself as technically inclined. I have installed Linux multiple times and have basic command line knowledge, and I've programmed in many languages, with the most experience making a static website game using HTML/CSS/JS.

Additionally, I own the superspruce.org domain (my registrar is Dynadot), but I don't really know how to wield the power of owning a domain. I also have some spare computers to be used for hosting, a 2009 laptop running Lubuntu and a 3900X+32GB RAM desktop other running KDE Neon, but I'm also open to experimenting with cloud hosting too (I know, sacrilege here).

However, I don't know much about the TCP/IP protocol or other networking protocols. I'm happy to learn, but the curve would need to start gently.

I would want to try hosting my websites, and also a personal non-federated Lemmy instance to serve as a archivable forum for my games. Even if it's not very useful, it's great experience.

(Electric) Motorcycles of CES 2024: AI-driven tech steals the spotlight

Not sure if this is the right community for this, but I see plenty of electric motorcycle stuff here, so I'll bite. Message me if this is the wrong place for this content.

Anyways, really? AI? On a motorcycle? Isn't the entire point of motorcycles feeling the freedom of manipulating your machine to do what you ask of it? Without any AI and data selling nonsense? Please don't let this be the direction of motorcycling.

AI is powerful has a place in many areas. Just keep it out of motorcycles, a hobby defined by skill, freedom, and most importantly, fun.

Give us electric motorcycles whose tech adds to the experience, not tries to turn it into a IoT data harvesting device, please.

What is your dream motorcycle garage?

If you could have any three production motorcycles, with any budget, what would you pick?

    I'll go first:

    1. Yamaha R1 (Sport riding and trackdays, also crossplane sound)
    2. Triumph Tiger 900 GT (touring and adventure riding with an actually manageable seat height)
    3. Honda Grom (for just hooning around for when I want a small light bike)

    Super weird error, what's happening?

I'm not sure if this is the best community to post in, but I just bought a used computer and slotted in an RX480 as the GPU. I installed KDE Neon 5.27 on it, and it worked flawlessly for 2 days.

Then, even though it was working earlier today, it slept and then would not wake up. So I turned off the power and turned it back on again, and was greeted with this error screen:

The only prior error message I'd gotten from the system was when I tried to install wine for one application, it told me some packages weren't up to date, without a way to fix it. I can enter the BIOS just fine.

What is going on? How do I fix this?
