The latest monthly consumer price index showed that the average price of a dozen Grade A eggs in U.S. cities reached $4.95 in January.
Summary
Egg prices in the U.S. have reached a record high of $4.95 per dozen amid a severe bird flu outbreak that has led to the culling of millions of egg-laying chickens.
The shortage is compounded by rising feed, fuel, and labor costs, as well as increased demand and stricter cage-free regulations in several states.
Consumers face empty shelves, surcharges, and limited availability, with some areas pricing cartons at $10 or more.
Prices are expected to continue rising, especially with Easter demand.
I was expecting a whole raft of letters and op-eds in my local corporate rag (Denver Post) that more or less spew the same old "give him a chance to pivot to being presidential, you guyyyyyyzzzzzz" and "we had to put up with Biden when he was in office and you didn't see US protesting like this [1]!!! boo hoo hoo" type of stuff for the next several weeks months after he took power. I don't recall seeing too many of these. Weird.
[1] The fact that these assholes could act like they had to "put up with" Biden when neither Biden or anyone in his administration was trying to target entire demographics and cause "pain" to the American people, etc...completely unlike what donvict is doing. Nevermind that they can sit there and gaslight about not protesting. Protesting is a completely valid and highly American and patriotic tradition - what THEY fucking did when they lost was to throw an insurrection that was run in parallel with a fucking coup attempt.
Make sure at every opportunity that you call everyone of those fuckers a hypocrite, and if you don't have to maintain any sort of relationship with them, also make sure they know how much of a cunt they are too.
I still wonder if him staring at the sun was more from him just being a complete idiot, or a "imma gunna show them what a MAN I am! This is some real fucking leadership, I tell u wut!"
Given the cost of everything including stickers, maybe it might be good to have a printout of this and take it everywhere, then take an image with this held up next to the prices.
Also, in Bronzo the Clown's America, I might get deported or sent to Gitmo over defacing some gas pump with...stickers.
Nah, I'd like to turn that around. It is not necessary for you to eat eggs, so it shouldn't affect you, same as it doesn't affect me. More inclusive, you know? Together towards a better world.
I'd prefer some salted nuts and kidney beans in my enchilada, quinoa is a bit overrated tbh.
Only Democrats' shadowy cabal control the economy like this, it's a known fact from Fox News!
Every day Obama wakes up before every American, and personally draws on the price tags of the things a Republican was craving that day with a sharpie, to ensure they yelled at a store clerk.
Biden personally loves to go to a gas station and round up to the nearest dollar, but at Chevron stations it's the nearest dollar plus 13 cents.
Hilary Clinton uses space lasers to make streaming services remove content and increase the cost.

This was fun to just go off and write, have the Republicans considered making a weird sci-fi world to role play in, instead of ruining the world?
Just yesterday my friend texted that his local bodega in the Bronx is selling $1 loosies or $12/dozen. Fucking egg loosies. What’s next? Egg dealers on Gun Hill?
Bodegas are small businesses that are usually very entrenched in the community. This isn’t extortion. It’s a way to make a few eggs affordable. My criticism is of the need for the loosies in the first place.
Neighborhood chicken lady went from $2 to $3 a dozen due to the price increase of chicken feed. Hopefully her chickens won’t be affected, mostly for her & her family’s sake.
For for 65sek (6usd) i get 20 eggs from free-range outdoor hens. At my local grocery store. Maybe you guys can save some money by not bleaching your eggs anymore. It's a pretty pointless practice anyway.
We don't "bleach" the eggs, we wash the outer membrane off along with dirt and feces to reduce salmonella contamination (and because poopy eggs are harder to market) which is also why they're refrigerated. We can't skip the washing process without first addressing the filthy conditions cheap commercial eggs are produced in and Big Ag is just one of many powerful interest groups that has had our government by the balls for decades (at least).
I have a coworker who keeps about 250 chickens at her house and sells the brown eggs for $5 a dozen. Meanwhile, a dozen white eggs at Shop-Rite are $10.
Is that a the grocer version of “dealer premiums” from when car dealers legally price gouged during the covid parts supply shortages?
It’s gonna be like the USSR except instead of bread shops running out of bread you’re just not going to be able to afford it because the grocer jacked up the price to $30/loaf.
Not exactly. More like post-USSR. Before fall of USSR sortages meant everything that was produced was consumed and there was some demamd on top. After fall it meant some things were left to rot on shelves in hope someone will buy for higher price.
My close save on (company from graphic) seems to have trouble keeping eggs in stock, plus it's like $8-9 for free range which I usually try to buy. Their quality (used to be quite orange now more dull, not as yellow as most eggs still) has gone down I hope the chickens are treated better.
So are people treating this as a generalized sign of inflation, or are people actually worried about eggs?
Because if you're treating this as a gauge of inflation, it's a bad one, as there's a bird flu outbreak greatly affecting egg prices.
And if it's just concern about eggs... I don't get it. I mean, I think our household eats a lot of eggs, but a lot is like 2-3 dozen a week. And if eggs cost $2 more than usual, well, that's $6 a week. Meh? I doubt this is breaking the bank for many people.
I think it's a meme at this point, because some people said they voted for trump due to egg prices and he might have promised to reduce them on day one.
Eggs are staple like bread or milk. It's a cheap source of protein and when the price goes up the people who feel it the most are the ones that are most sensitive to grocery prices. So yes, to you it might not seem like a lot, but to someone who's barely able to afford groceries it's life changing.
I never look at organic stuff because while they may legitimately avoid pesticides and other chemicals, there is no scientifically demonstrated benefit to organic produce, and it costs a lot more.
There's an implication that organic is healthier and just better, but there's no evidence of that.
Like I could buy milk from cows that have nice names and listen to music while being milked, and that might make me feel better, but the nutritional quality of the milk is the same.
Because being anti-GMO is hateful bigotry. Things like golden rice have already saved and enhanced millions of lives, it’s just that the benefit goes to poor people with dark skin.
I just saw an 18 pack for $14.75 yesterday at my local grocery. A dozen is $10, and that's for the white eggs, not the brown ones. Luckily we have a Grocery Outlet that had a dozen for $7.50, but holy shit.
"You see that? It's made of chicken. It's actually made of chicken. You kill it; you got free chicken, you can sell it to people. Or... don't kill it, and fucking eggs come out of their arses! Fucking hell!"
Yeah I don't think the joke would be improved by having Mitchell's character be accurate about the chickens anatomy. In fact, I think it might ruin it a bit if he wasn't as excitedly silly and incredulous.
But yes I take your point about what terms we use to refer to cloakas.
Meanwhile, my small backyard chicken flock (smallish coop with an enclosed and roofed run) eats the organic trash from our kitchen, and then they give me between 5-8 eggs per day. Literally, I picked up 7 eggs yesterday even though nights are around -10 degrees C. It’s a miracle.
You friend, ARE a miracle. There's only one of you, only one known planet in the entirety of the known universe where you could even have come to be. Same for the chickens. Miraculous!!
I'm in Colombia. My local grocery store has them for 23 mil pesos ($5.58 USD at today's exchange rate) for 30 eggs. That comes out to $2.38 USD per dozen.
The tienda by my home has them cheaper, but I can't check their prices online to verify the exact cost.
Prices here in Norway are... uh, I don't know. I bought a large pack yesterday, and the checkout total was about what I expected. So normal, I guess. Probably same-ish as Ireland.
USDA's puts them at $7.74/dozen based on futures and project to get to nearly $10 this year. Given eggs can often be loss leaders, actual prices might not match contract prices everywhere, but stores trying to bring in customers and increasing other prices to compensate means looking directly at consumer egg prices might be misleading.
Yeah, local prices can very a lot. My local prices are pretty similar to the ones in this article. But some places have been over $10/dozen for some time.
Curious when that cost is based on. Given future contracts are often purchased in advanced, those prices could reflect prices from months ago, when the wholesale market price was 1/3rd of the current price. Guess still not technically a loss leader if they price current inventory based on what they are paying for future inventory though.
Damn, it sucks that you have to eat eggs. It sure would be nice if there were other things you could eat, alas you have to keep buying eggs and bitching about it the whole time instead of just eating something else.
Eat a bagel or something jesus christ. Nobody is forcing you to buy eggs.
Boohoo the omnis have to consider switching to a different breakfast for a few months, this is just like mass starvation. They don't sell 5000 other things at the grocery store, eggs are the only staple food and now we have to spend 90% of our daily income on them.
Your preferred breakfast being a bit more expensive while other things that were already cheaper are still cheaper is not comparable to a french peasant being unable to pay for their only staple food. Get a grip.
Eggs are murder. Baby boy chicks are killed at less than an hour old because they are “useless”. Mother hens are killed at 3-4 years old when their egg production starts slowing down. They can live for 10-12 years. #LiveVegan
I don't like the focus on the culling of male chicks, sure it's terrible, but how we raise and exploit the hens is such a larger moral travesty that that should be the focus. We also shouldn't hope for hens to live for a decade. Currently existing hens who can be rescued sure, but the modern egg laying hen should not exist the same way certain dog breeds shouldn't exist, we have selected them for our pleasure rather than their own health and livelihood.
I just wish they would anesthesize the chicks before throwing them in an industrial grinder. There are a lot of zoos and rescues than need bird protein for their animals, and don't care if the meat tastes a little gamey.
