There have been several polls. We're older and more female than you think.

FEEEEMALE.
uh huh. That’s absolutely how women refer to themselves.
3 5 ReplyIn that context it makes sense though, it's being used as an adjective, as is "older".

I’m 30, so naturally I assume everyone else is too
39 0 Reply28 and same. A lot more millennial energy here than Gen z. Honestly Lemmy feels like 2012 reddit to me so I assume it's mostly the same age group as me and a bit older. 🤷
17 0 ReplyPretty sure everyone in the world is either 30, 60 or a child.
3 0 ReplyI'm 31. From what I've seen, a large portion are around this age. I think there's very few young people.
8 0 ReplyI think of 31 as pretty young.
8 0 Replynot completely correct! 19

Most user are in age b/w 30-50 I guess. I am 17 btw.
7 0 ReplyI think mostly 30s and 40s based on the memes
21 0 ReplyI posted a thing from 8 bit theater and it got a lot of upvoted. Definitely old people.
9 0 ReplyIs this just our generation's facebook? Damnit.
Well... at least we know how to use the internet i guess.

Do we have to be 57? I just wanted to be part of a counting train.

As a serious answer, I’d guess Lemmy skews younger. Too many idealists here to think the average user base has the wisdom that comes from experience.
Sorry, younglings. You’ll know when you get older: the long view clearly demonstrates optimism is a lie. History is a corkscrew. Progress is made, but only through endless repetitions of past mistakes.

And not what I’m talking about at all.

Younger than 30yo the technical knowledge declines rapidly, so it's very unlikely for them to be here.
10 1 ReplyMileage will vary. I have gotten a lot better when it comes to tech (mainly software) in the past 3 years, as someone who is only in the middle of his 20s.
3 0 ReplyI too am in my mid 20s and I generally have gotten more tech literate in the last couple years, though mostly hardware since software is the devil.

Seems like a young crowd to me based on the often naive and idealistic post replies. OTOH, I'm very often surprised that so many seem my age (50s).
15 0 ReplyReassessing after this week's events, most of the users I would have previously guessed were high school sophomores are probably adult Americans.
8 0 Reply25-35
2 0 ReplyI think it varies greatly. The trans communities, for instance, seem to tread younger and I get the sense that many posters are teenagers. Tech communities, on the other hand, seem 30s-40s.
3 0 ReplyAround 9 years old. Could be some 11 year olds in there.
10 2 ReplyI'm only 9 because thats when I died.

2 0 ReplyI'd say we probably skew more towards 30s-40s a lot of us are transplants from other sites and have been around the block a few times - there are certainly younger folks too, but they had to somehow trip over fediverse tech through a fluke.

That's a great point, we've been around the block so we're less receptive to enshittification bullshit

I found Digg just before the Exodus and hung around Reddit for a decade or so then split during the Reddit blackout.44 0 ReplyDon’t forget /.
I stayed around that one for way, way too long.
21 0 Reply39 here, exact same backstory.
11 0 ReplyI'm 27, and came here after the reddit blackout. Digg was before my time on the Internet. What was it like?

Based on this poll with 599 participants from the german [email protected] community, most of us are somewhere between 20 and 40 years old.
This is only a small fraction of lemmy users, maybe it just represents the age range of german meme enjoyers on lemmy, but I don't know of any other poll with a sample size this big.
72 1 ReplyAlso see stats from:
Which are pretty similar.
24 0 ReplyTwo 13-15 year old users
Does Lemmy even have a minimum age or TOS?
1 0 ReplyNope, Lemmy is just the software after all. It would be up to the individual instances to set up some kind of TOS or age verification.
2 0 Reply
Yeah, prolly shifts older by 1 or 2 demographics, is my guess.

10 0 ReplyI'm old as fuck. I definitely show my age as often as possible.

Hopefully older and more mature than Reddit users.
I mean an average teen aint gonna find Lemmy or even like using Fediverse stuff, they mostly stick to mainstream social media. Sign up applications probably further weeds them out. Yay no pesky kids.
(I don't hate younger people, I just find that many of them tend to be immature and use the anonymity of the internet to post edgy opinions like racism)
8 19 ReplyHello, I am your average Teen(17).
2 0 ReplyI mean an average teen aint gonna find Lemmy or even like using Fediverse stuff
So does this make me an above average or below average teen?
4 0 Replyi'd like to know too
2 0 ReplyDepends if you are 19 or 119?
(119 is technically a "teen" ager? no?)
3 0 ReplyYesn't

I find this being an ageist take. Not everyone is immature.
20 0 ReplyAlso, speaking as someone who's entered his 50th year, shitposting in alternative venues is not really a sign of maturity.
