There's now a phenomenon where everyone's (including you) political beliefs are now visible to everyone within a 1KM radius, how fucked are you?
Think of it like a video game HUD where there's just text floating above a person's head where you see all their political beliefs, including the degree of bigotry (if any), or whether or not the person believes in the use of violence to acheive polical goals, basically every little detail that would accurately depict people's political beliefs. Your beliefs are also visible to others. This effect has 1KM radius, including people above and below you.
So, how fucked are you?
(Think of all the authorities in your area that can see your beliefs, including the beliefs regarding the recent incident...)
Because most people on Lemmy secretly (or not secretly) wish they could murder everyone who doesn’t share their politics and are projecting this on other people.
Because some of us have lived in places in the US where that's pretty much been said and demonstrated before.
If you don't feel that way, consider yourself lucky to have never lived in extremely intolerant areas of the states that use violence against people who think, look, or behave differently.
Edit: Amazing. The people down voting this and other sentiments choose to live in their own little bubble and have never been to parts of the US where this is true. Keep believing what you want to believe then.
Also why would they come for you if you are progessive and leftist? I think, here in Greece at least, it's far more likely people to be against you if you are a fascist. And I dont think Greece is much of a progressive country.🤷
And besides all that, I think it's kinda easy to get a rough idea of people's beliefs anyways.
If everyone's political beliefs were something you could see, I actually think it would create more peace. How many people go along with a more extreme take only because they are afraid to be ostracized from their community? Odds are folks would look around and see that the world is more shades of gray than what social media tries to mold us into.
I had someone tell me I was brainwashed because I have a degree in political science. I was taken aback, but then decided to ask myself if I was. I mean, what's the difference between being educated and being brainwashed? Is it the conclusion that you come to? Is it some physically measurable thing?
Some good questions to ask is "is the information I'm getting geared to make me feel a certain way or to inform me about something?" "Am I learning in a setting where I am afraid that to have a dissenting opinion would get me kicked out of my community?" "Are certain ideas immediately ruled out as false without further discussion?"
At least in my degree, I felt that there were a plethora of opinions in my classroom discussions, and when we approached different lenses, we made sure to have a thorough understanding of them, as best we could. I can think of only one philosophy that an international relations teacher ruled off outright, and that was "ancient hatreds theory". Even then we spent several classes taking it apart and why it is a poor tool to view conflicts.
That said, I would say I was brainwashed after college when I spent more time on Facebook, reddit, and Instagram. With the perpetual rage machine at my fingertips, I was afraid that if I disagreed I would be flamed and cancelled from groups that I loved. I am very wary of getting information from the socials since things are so over simplified and there is little to no welcomed critical discussion. It's just a yelling pit with people further entrenched in their beliefs.
People will squint at me trying to figure me out a lot. My political beliefs are all over the place. My goal is clear (an egalitarian society that rewards hard work, but ensures a comfortable life for everyone, globally).
But I have absolutely no idea what policies would achieve that.
I'm just sure as shit neither Capitalism nor a state-controlled economy would. Probably leaning towards Anarchism.
If authorities could see my beliefs, they could lock me up, cause they're actually illegal.
A citizen of the world; A left leaning, anarcho syndicalist and when I’m feeling moderate, a democratic socialist. People would think the same thing they already think about me: that I’m a person that is fed up with fascist boot lickers on both “sides” of the rapidly rightward shifting Overton window.
I can't drive anywhere. There are way too many people in a 1km radius too see past the cloud of floating tags. I just really hope closing my eyes turns the effect off so I can try to get some sleep.
Not very. I'm pretty mild in my ideologies as far as scandinavia goes. Once traveling to the US again my presence would probably make Joseph McCarthy rise from his grave, though.
Funny. I moved from Oklahoma to California in March. I couldn't take the idea of raising my daughter there. It's nice here, I suppose, but I see almost as many trump flags here as I did there. Granted, there are way more people here so it's only natural they do exist. I just didn't think they would be so open about it. I'm sure some of that has to do with where in California I'm at, but it made me realize this shit is everywhere. At least, for now, my daughter will have access to what she needs or wants in the event something awful happens or if she decides she's not who she was born as.
Long story short, these right wing nuts are very much displaying their politics for the world to see, no matter where they are.
As a something-between-liberal-and-leftist-with-a-hint-of-arm-yourself-to-fight-the-increasingly-popular-Nazis (is there a word for this?) in the middle of the cousin-fuckingly deep south... yeah I probably wouldn't even survive the trip home from work.
Oh, everybody can already see that. I'm a man in my 30s and I still wear my punk vest everywhere. My feelings on cops, Nazis, and fascists are made pretty clear on it, while anyone who recognizes basic anarchist emblems will see those too. It doesn't do a perfect 1:1 job of communicating my beliefs, but I'm more open and specific with what I believe than any coward in a red hat
Not fucked at all. I agree with my beliefs, and I'm tired of being misunderstood. Having them be visible would be vindicating. I just want to be friends with everyone at the end of the day.
I don't go through life like this. I think if I met a rightwing nutjob, I could get along with them or at least bond over something not related to politics. I had to do this when I worked in an office, too. People are still people.
I'm white, I'm male, I'm straight, cis-gendered, and middle-class. My neighbours aren't going to bother me. And if they also become aware of what "anarcho-communism" means in the process, they wouldn't even blink.
Thr police might not appreciate my thoughts on them, but I think they'd suddenly have way less public support in this scenario, so meh.
I'd say pretty fucked because people with suppressed bigotry who didn't publicly express those views due to shame, societal expectations etc now have an easy way to find each other as well as their enemies. They'll also have no more reason to try to hide their intentions. And unfortunately I feel like there might be more of those people than people willing to stand against them.
Florida here. Had a Bernie bumper sticker from the early days of his campaign til the end of Trump's admin. Only ever incited two interactions, both were physical threats.
I think if everyone was generally more aware of the details of everyone else’s political beliefs, we’d collectively be much less fucked than we are today.
I'm fine. I live in Canada, and I'm not a fascist, Nazi, (colour) supremacist, or anything.
I just lean to the left and appreciate public/social services; which is slightly "communist" but not "authoritarian Nazi" Communist. No no, you should be free to live how you want, work in whatever field you want, eat the food you like, love who you wanna love, and live how and where you want to live. I'm just in favor of things like, not bankrupting someone because they got pneumonia and had to go to the hospital for a day; also fire departments, schools, employment insurance (social/government), streets and roads, parks, sidewalks, community centers.... You know, stuff that everyone owns, but nobody "owns"? Stuff we all can use without having to pay for it.
I'm also in favor of UBI, but I realize that UBI may not happen anytime soon, maybe not in my lifetime. I hope it happens eventually (or at do away with fiat currency), for the good of the people, but I recognize the fight is difficult to win.
If you’re engaging online at all, or donating to any politicians, the authorities are already aware of your politics.
Depends on the implementation for me. I’m in the southern US. If it just says ‘socialist,’ I’m probably fucked. But if it actually shows policies I support, like ‘everyone is entitled to own the output of their own labor,’ then most people would probably agree with me. People are propagandized against the socialist/communist label, but most of them agree with the policies.
Depends on the specific "socialism" you believe in.
For example, I still belive in a democratic system, I just want less of capitalism. So its would probably show me as either "Social Democrat" or "Democratic Socialist". But it would also show my opposition to those "Marxist Leninist" variants of "Socialism". Like "Opposed to the 'communists' in USSR and China" would probably be one of the labels that it shows.
Well, lucky I live in a blue city, so hopefully nobody would attack me for it.
If you explain your specfic beliefs before you get shot, maybe you could survive? Maybe...
I'll be fine, I don't lie about my beliefs, and it's pretty 50 50 here. I'm pretty sure I have some family members that would be sweating about it though.
Every little detail would probably cause some issues. Someone walking around here “advertising” racism would have some real problems as where I live is very mixed. There are probably a lot of people riding the edge of violence for a multitude of reasons, assumed rage over politics-based slights absolutely being one of them. I don’t think I’d have too many personal problems, considering my “hard-left” leanings revolve around trying to make lives better for everyone.
Might help if you got within a km of a politician, you could tell pretty quick how full of shit they were. There’d be some serious upheaval, I think.
Depends who's looking. Most of the poor and middle class asking align with my views, if I don't say scary words like "communist” and "socialist"; Those with huge incomes might have a problem. And my ex who aligns with my views but votes against them because they somehow think these people care about them.
Only applies to people physically within 1KM, including people above you on a plane (although IDK who flies that low), and also people below you in caves or tunnels. 1KM is any direction above below or diagonal. People who suffer from amnesia or schizophenia or any condition where they don't know who they are anymore, would probably have their info glitching out on the HUD display. And holographic projections like in star wars are still not considered physical presence
I'm pretty fucked. First of all it's going to be several paragraphs because I don't neatly fit an ideology and then there's something to piss off every group.
I'm homeless and unemployed by the end of the day and have to flee the state. Both my landlord and general manager are hardcore MAGAts, and I live in a small, remote town in a very red state. It would genuinely not be safe for my politics to be known.
Oh no, people now will know I am a stoic communist and real socialist even without me plastering my political believes in each discussion even vaguely related to politics or economics.
I'd be fine, I think. Might find out one or two things about neighbours that they'd rather wasn't known, but I don't think there's anyone who would take great offence at my views, even if they opposed them. And I've nothing I'd want to hide.
I actually kind of like this scenario, as a way for people to understand that what they think about something may be far from the majority position.
Universal Healthcare? Fuck I'd settle for Healthcare that works.
Just... anything I want anything good, any change possible. Obviously that makes me a 'traitor' to society or whatever. Why does it just keep getting worse?!
Not very no. I'm probably not a polical anomaly of any kind, but some of my acquaintances might be surprised as I'm usually attributed to more extreme beliefs by those who don't know me as well.
Can't understand why since my voiced opinions aren't different than what the majority holds.
Well considering politics isn't something I've spent a lot of my time thinking about, and I suspect my ideas are somewhat under developed. Because of which I'd love to take a look at that scoreboard and see what it says about me. Because I have no clue what I truly believe anymore.
Bernie Sanders would look like (For this example, I'm gonna guess his policies based on what he has said publicaly):
-This person is a Democratic Socialist
-believes in a governmern-run healthcare system where everyone pays into the system via taxation, and for said system to pay for any healthcare expense required by anyone under the the jurisdiction of the system
-believes in retaining a democratic system, as opposed to non-democratic approaches to Socialism, such as Marxism-Leninism
-believes everyone should have access to education for free, from kindergarden all the way to university
-believes that Citizens United Supreme Court ruling should be overturned
My right extremist friends would hate me for being too economically and socially left; my left extremist friends would hate me for being too socially and economically right. My progressive friends would be upset that I'm not progressive enough on social issues especially. My neo-con and centrist friends would be upset that I oppose the status queue.
Having said, those who examine their own beliefs would probably not fit any label perfectly either, so basically everyone would hate everyone.
I would look above peoples heads for indication that their beliefs are not inherited from a label, but rather assembled through self-reflection and life experience because those sorts of people are more conducive to openly discussing beliefs and possibly having their opinion change in regards to new information.
The authorities wouldn't give a shit because I'm a law abiding citizen and even though I oppose some of the things our nation does, I do not meaningfully resist and I still participate in capitalism and the other structures that prop them up in power.
Thanks for that moment of self examination. Now I'm standing in front of the mirror judging the political beliefs hovering above my own head! :D
Having said, those who examine their own beliefs would probably not fit any label perfectly either, so basically everyone would hate everyone.
OR! Everyone would realize we're not nearly as divided as the establishment tries to make us believe we are, and we could go back to being a mostly unified country, like we were when I was younger, before Fox news, Hannity, and drug addict Limbaugh.
Honestly, I'm not totally sure. I think a lot of people would look at me strangely because of my pretty hardcore libertarian views, though. And I might very well be a target for the police.
But since I disagree with our migration policy I might be called racist by some leftist extremists.
I in no way think that all migrants need to "go home" but I do believe we need to take a tougher stance against migrants committing repeated criminal acts.
But since I disagree with our migration policy I might be called racist by some leftist extremists.
I doubt people are gonna harm you just because you are slightly less accepting of immigrants.
I mean, there are probably a lot more people with even worse views like "Deport immigrants immediately" type of views, and they have already publically announced their views and they aren't dead yet, so it's probably fine for you.
Eh, I don't believe that if I accept a guest for dinner into my home, I should accept them punching me in the face repeatedly.
If their reaction of me being pissed off at the first punch is a genuine shock and and appology with an explanation of why they did it and them realizing it was wrong, then I could sort of accept it as being a genuine missunderstanding.
Same goes with criminal acts, I can see that a migrant comes from a different culture and might do something that is a crime here, get punnished and learning from it, but if they keep doing it and refuse to learn, then no, they should not be welcome here.
This obviously goes for every nationallity and culture.
