I am an amateur historian. I remember someone posted something completely wrong to push an anti immigrant agenda, like Muslims and Christians have never lived in harmony in history. I then pointed our Jerusalem constantly switching hands and pilgrim rights being respected, Coptics living under Mamalukian rule peacefully and overall under Ottomon rule 600 years later there's still large swaths of Orthodox in Turkey just to name a few times. I got bombarded with comments, dms, all my posts on reddit were like downvoted and this crowd followed me to other subreddits to downvote and trash talk. Someone posted you follow R/Hometown so your from X Hometown. It was a very weird situation and I reported it all, it cleared up but I'm 60% I was targeted for being an active poster who leans left. I genuanlly thought I was one step from being doxxed..
Your experience of that is pretty much the key reason I've not bothered to explain this outside of a very limited specialist community I owed a lot to as I was putting it together.
I keep seeing new finds that would be really interesting to discuss, and I kind of hate seeing users confused about their own ancestral history while sitting knowing the answers, but I'll be damned if I'm going to be the one putting controversial answers out there in a more public way.
People are fucking nuts and it seems each day care less and less about actual truth and facts and more about tribalism and confirmation bias to the point of irrationality.
Over the next few years a lot of stuff will be identified by AIs capable of better correlation of data points than researchers to date, and then it can be the AI that gets to be the object of crazy people's ire and not actual humans that were just nerding out over research and data.
So in short, does the evidence linked mean that Jewish history and origin don't align sith the Bible? Shocker. As if anything in there shouldn't be taken with a bucketful of salt.
I've experiences this on Lemmy and have blocked some instance, but probably just gonna give up on Lemmy too. I think I'm over talking to people (or bots? Who knows...) on the internet. It's all bullshit anyway, politics, memes, advertising, blah, blah that doesn't actually provide any meaning or positive things to my life. I was a passive observer of the internet for a long time before getting more active on reddit, and then Lemmy. I'm so tired of having to defend my opinions and people trying to start arguments out of nothing, and I don't care enough to research political shit to provide a truly airtight argument before someone tears it apart, or whatever else other fight someone is trying to start on any given day. At one point I was arguing about something with someone, and we both had the same position: "Trump is bad", but for some reason they were really going after me, even though we're on the same side, because i was consuming "too much conspiracy news" thinking that the 2024 election was gonna get violent from Trump's supporters. Really just over the social aspect of the internet in general, to be honest.
Modern misinformation is often let's find some common ground so I may "Seem" altruistic. It's unfortunate as common ground us the best way to reach people but it now being weaponized. "Trump is bad but atleast he's not Biden, who is supporting the genocide in Gaza!!" Like Trump wouldn't be doing the same shit, like come on..
A set of baby twins that are going to slowly die over the next two years because the company that made a single shot cure wants to charge over $2,000,000 per dose and insurance won't spend that much.
The US hard up needs straight socialized Healthcare. Our model is complete shit.
Their story gets even more screwed up. The woman who had the kids' health insurance (through her work, cause murika) cut this drug and others like it the day after the woman's kids were born. Doctors ran tests on her twins and confirmed the issue 4 days later.
So if she'd have had her kids less than a week earlier, the insurance would have been forced to cover it. I practically find it hard to believe it was such a coincidence.
My aunts FB comments. My whole life I thought she was a lovely sweet lady, who was always super nice to me... Then I saw some years later she told somone else in the comment section should kill himself. Simple reason: the other person had different political views. It turns out she is a hardcore racist with very fascist world view and she is super proud of it.
I am not on FB for a very long time and I didn't talk to her for 10+ years but I think it is for the best.
Although I don't have kids everything I've heard about the Ruby Franke/8 Passengers case made my blood boil. That scumbag saw her kids as nothing but a way to get clicks and money, and I'm glad that she's going to rot in prison.
And related to this, add animal abuse to the list of things that make my blood boil too. It's wild to think that until recently there was such a thing as a thriving "monkey torture network".
Indeed. Horrific things. Innocent people and animals, so enraging to see.
I was probably in my teens when I saw this video of stomping little bunnies with heels. Like sharp heel shoes, whatever you call them. And the bunnies could do nothing but receive this torture.
Bear in mind I had watched beheadings and other gore prior to this, on a crazy early millennium Internet.
The numerous cases of 4chan users providing "tech support" to children who don't know any better.
Especially making a child put their parent's laptop in the oven while throwing its battery in a bowl of salt water (which can short circuit the battery and cause it to catch fire btw).
For me it has to be an audio recording some old guy made of him hiding in his basement to confront two neighborhood teenagers who kept sneaking into his house. He shoots the guy first, then if i remember correctly the girl was in shock and said something like "you shot him" and then the old guy was like "you're fucking dead removed" and executed her.
Then he proceeded to leave the bodies in his basement over the weekend, then went to the cops to report the attempted robbery. Upon presenting his evidence, he was arrested.
I'm so happy that I didn't see any of that. I did see a picture of a woman eating shit straight from someone's ass twice tho. It was gross, but at least not anywhere near as bad.
Ugh that will probably never leave you. I haven't seen CSAM since I stumbled on it in the 1990s but what I saw is still burnt into my brain. What has been seen cannot be unseen.
This is one of the reasons I stay on kbin, it doesn't autoload images.
Similarly, I was on a sort of diary forum and someone decided to share their very graphic life story with no warning whatsoever.
I mean I get why they shared it but it was so horrifying to know that a child went through that. I mean I know there's always the possibility it was a fake post but given what I know about confirmed cases (including someone I know personally), I believe it.
She was a Japanese high school student who was kidnapped, raped, tortured, and finally murdered after 40 days by a group of teenage boys who almost all got severely light sentences. The perpetrators were known to have bragged about their crimes and their family members desecrated her grave for ruining their sons' lives.
He was a Japanese mech pilot who invented the kamikaze corp in WW1 as part of Operation Jinjuriki to overthrow the Emporer's wife who was said to be quite large. I have also not googled anything.
It was actually when I first started using this site. I've been jumpscared by worst shit spammed by some bot on Lemmy Shitpost than anything I've ever seen mingling around internet edgelords
About ten years ago when I was on Twitter someone tweeted to please go report an account which was horrible without saying why. So I went to the account. Twitter in those days had thumbnails of the pictures you posted at the bottom of your account that you could swipe through, so you saw a bunch of photos at once instead of individually, and it was child sexual abuse material. Thankfully it was only thumbnail sized so I just got a sense of it without really seeing horrifying detail, but I was pretty depressed.
Like honestly, what the fuck is wrong with people? I remember adding random people on Snap (back then, I used it a lot for scambaiting so I'd talk to deposit scammers a lot) and in my recommended, there was a person called "(name-of-girl) Dog" so you would think maybe it's just a person posting pictures of their dog on their stories, right? Wrong. (Content warning) >! It's a girl selling videos of her fucking her dog !< I just noped out of there, didn't even try to find out if it was real (should hopefully be fake, as regular pic sellers usually are, but you never know).
