I'm waiting to see what happens; they've announced the API screw-over of the 3rd party apps, but if the protests on the 12th+ blackout the site (you can't bill advertisers if there ain't no eyeballs) there might be some concession.
Look, Reddit hasn't been profitable - yet. The VCs who dumped in 1.3Bn bucks want it back, and I don't begrudge anyone for trying to make their own ham sandwich; we all gotta eat. My opinion is that the popular 3rd party app developers and API users should have been consulted and involved in the decision-making. And face it: apart from what we've paid to our favourite app developers we've received an awesome internet community for zero cost for over a decade (some of us anyway)!
How hard is it to go to the Apollo guy or the RiF folks and say: hey. we appreciate you making awesome apps. We need to start earning money. But you too need to make money. How can we work together, to maybe put a few more ads, or ad revenue generating "premium" features without screwing each other over, or our users?
So Ill wait to see what happens in the coming week and ride Reddit-is-Fun out to the bitter end and the lights go out and then probably delete my Reddit account then. But I've made the first steps. Im here ain't I?
Oh, and put in a request now to get an archive of all your Reddit content. I suspect that department will be quite busy in the coming weeks. https://www.reddit.com/settings/data-request
Im eager to see what form it comes in. If my posts and comments come with some context around them then Im fine with just deleting my account. I hope the links are permalinks so the backreferences to REddit stay intact (AND, you don't need the API to access, you could essentially "scrape" the context of your posts). I've been trying to find a way to search my own comments and posts for years (there are tools, but I want an OFFLINE archive of my stuff - I frequently find myself replying to someone and going hey wait Ive already answered this, now where did I put that comment...
iamthatis (Apollo) even said he could do it with a bit more time after the initial shock, some negotiation etc, he was willing to try if Reddit would throw him anything at all so it was possible. But Reddit instead shut down all communication then lied about what happened
Yeah, I like how they tried to throw him under the bus.
Terrible that, Canada being single party consent states/provinces for recording phone conversations.
I don't think I'm going to delete my account, but I don't really see myself being active anymore. Back when I had an Android phone I used Relay, and when I switched to iOS I used Apollo. They were just better clients and offered a smooth experience that Reddit themselves failed to provide.
More than that though, the utter slander towards Christian Selig just puts me off entirely. He's been nothing but lovely, listened to his community, and developed a fantastic app, even taking accessibility into account. Reddit on the other hand doesn't want to bother implementing accessibility features so they'll happily let certain accessibility focused apps continue using the API.
It's just so transparently terrible.
On the other hand I'm glad it's happening. I'd not even heard of the "fediverse" before, but reading up on the ActivityPub protocol and the general idea of how these things work, this is something I really want to succeed. Take social networks out of the hands of corporations and put it into the hands of users.
I'm not a massive fan of Lemmy's front-end, but that's fixable. The fact that the code is open source (and they use something as standard as Bootstrap) makes it super approachable. Maybe I could even help out.
I'll miss some of my niche subs, but I'd rather help get them started on a federated platform.
I did today. My account was about 5.5 years old and I have to admit it was somewhat hard at the beginning. But to be honest I already don’t care anymore.
That API stuff was a huge shitshow that made me really angry. I even would have paid a subscription to be able to keep using Apollo. But if Reddit decides to bring people out of business they are not going to do business with me either.
I will delete mine when Sync shuts down, since I exclusively use Sync to browse Reddit. But I really wanted to delete it after I read that sad excuse of an AMA.
I've put all my saved posts and comments in a notes file in preparation and have deleted an alt account. But I think I might keep my main a bit until my most niche subs have transferred (if they'll transfer at all). Once Apollo stops working I'll no longer be going to reddit on my phone in any case.
Currently cloning all of my saved posts with bdfr before sub's go dark
I've edited and deleted useless comments but I don't think I will delete helpful stuff I've posted as I've often found useful information from deleted accounts.
Then on June 30th I'll delete my 3 reddit accounts in solidarity with the 3PAs that are shutting down.
It seems like this year is really going to test the fediverse, first Twitter, now Reddit, and YouTube seems to be following by shutting down Vanced and attempting to shutdown Invidious and also Twitch seems to be messing with their content creators too
They're going to push a lot of people away and so far it seems like Mastodon and now Lemmy are attempting to fill the niche, I hope it works out because I love the concept
I haven't yet. I imagine it'll be like how I handled Twitter... slowly going there less and less as the fediverse got more and more compelling. Now my Twitter account is abandoned.
I won't delete all my comments, there are many that are answers to questions and explanations/instructions for those having problems.
I don't feel like it's right to remove them, since so many times I too found solutions in reddit old comments that I couldn't find anywhere else.
For now I'm just downloading my history, then I'll check subs selectively, I may delete a few in non-significant subs but the rest in subs containing help for others will stay.
I have. Found a tool on Github that edited and deleted every comment or post I did and then deleted the account. So, the nuclear option. My account may not have had much contributions, but it was an honest account of 5 years.
I just kicked off Redact, deleting all 2038 messages I've posted on Reddit over 9 years. It's bittersweet, but I'm done, and while i can't control their database management, I won't have some corpo fuckwit monetizing my content if i can help it.
I won't. If Reddit goes through with their changes, I'll probably use it a lot less, but you just can't beat certain subreddit communities. I've been a member since July 2015 and have used it nearly every day since I've joined. I hope that these changes will make me use my phone less, but being honest, I'll probably just be here all the time rather than Reddit.
I literally just deleted my account as of a few minutes ago. Read the thread from Christian about him shutting down the Apollo app, read the thread about how shit the Reddit team was treating him (and presumably, they probably treated other third-party devs similarly), and decided that since I was trying to quit Reddit anyways, might as well pull the plug now.
I've been eying out the Fediverse stuff for a while now, but that was the final push to go and join this place to trial it out and see how I like it.
The day I joined Beehaw is the day I deleted my 13 year old Reddit account. I'm already feeling the effects of spending less time scrolling and reading through comments, and more time actually talking to people.
i saved what i wanted and used shreddit to wipe all my comments, i did have a couple good threads with answers to questions but they were so outdated i dont think it mattered so i removed all comments, then deleted my account. here now today.
I just found one thing that Lemmy in browser does that Reddit doesn't do on the desktop. Your comment just pushed to the bottom of the thread I was writing a reply to. That was cool.
That is cool, but I think that's going to stop working. The devs are removing the feature that relies on because it's not efficient. Trying to keep everything smooth while there's a large increase in traffic
I requested my data the other day too. I haven't heard anything yet, which makes me wonder if they will actually do it, because I'm sure they got a ton of requests at this point. I'm hoping to get that before I pull the plug completely.
What's the benefit in requesting your data? I tend to periodically nuke my Reddit accounts and cycle through usernames and I've never thought to save anything.
Partially because this situation is outrageous. Partially because I forgot my password a long time ago and didn't provide a recovery email, and I like my username.
I use reddit via Reddit is Fun android app. No app? No using reddit for leisure. I still "use" it from google to get opinions on various things, but since I can't view it from Reddit is fun, I now only do this from desktop.
I tried to migrate off reddit a long time ago back when voat was hip and cool, before it turned into a hub of trolling.
Just deleted my ~13 year old account, I was never attached to it much, mostly lurked on subreddits that I enjoyed. Looking to be more active on lemmy though!
Please don't delete your Reddit account. It is of minimal impact to Reddit. Keeping a database of users and their posts is far less resourceintensive then actually serving them, Reddit won't care.
It does however screw ppl over when googling questions. We all know that adding site:reddit.com in google search is pretty much a must at this point when searching for solutions to obscure problems. Delete that and a bunch of potentially useful info is lost forever, and Reddit soldiers on without a care in the world.
If you insist upon deleting all your Reddit data, please archive it first, so valuable info isnt lost forever.
I'm waiting for the Relay app to go offline. My favourite subs aren't on Lemmy yet, and although I wouldn't mind helping out on another platform, I just don't have the time at the moment.
In an effort to support new communities here I'm going to let my reddit account linger so I can pull interesting content from there and post it here. At least for a week or two while things get established
Just did it. removed everything with the PowerDelete script, then deleted my 12 year old account. Sad. I deleted all comments, too. Like many people here I find it sad, that this information is gone, but I do not want to give reddit traffic for my personal content.
Jup. Deleted all my posts, guides and comments yesterday.
I think it's somewhat dramatic for the "future" since so much of reddit is absolutley great knowledge. I can't count how many times a reddit post or comment has helped me solve all kinds of weird problems...
I'm in the EU so I did a GDPR data request before deleting and essentially have a backup of all my own content. I'll filter through it and put on Lemmy or my blog what I think is worth keeping.
Power delete suite on GitHub . Copy a JavaScript and paste on the address bar while reading your profile. A new interface will come and can decide what to delete or overwrite
13 year old account checking in. I'm undecided if I want to fully delete or not yet. I want to at least hang on until the end of June when shit will really hit the fan (if it does). I'm always up for watching a train wreck.
I deleted all my comments and submissions today (except for a comment thanking the RIF dev and a couple of comments shitting on /u/spez). Not that I was ever a particularly popular redditor, but I'll be fucked if they'll earn another penny on any content I've created.
I deleted my throwaways weeks ago, but I deleted my main account earlier today. I lurked more than I posted which I guess means I don't have a lot of the history a lot of others have with their account but I posted every so often and had the account for years.
Even so, reddit has made it a place I don't want to be, I want them to know that (by falling user numbers) and I also worry reddit will make it more difficult in the future to get rid of your account.
I just deleted my u/truejeta account, which was almost 5 years old. Still don't know if I'm gonna miss Reddit, but we'll see. Anyway Lemmy looks very promising, so I'm happy to be here
Couple of weeks ago I got permanently suspended from reddit. I've been a user for 11 years, they suspended my 11 year old account.
Why? Here's why.
It was in worldnews sub, you probably will remember the video where a cop kills a guy who's threatening others to commit suicide.
All I said was this:
"Sir you cannot kill yourself, that's our job"
BAM. Permanently banned for threatening and spreading violence. It's unbelievable. Mods think they're gods, so do admins. Fuck reddit ,I hope they collapse like WTT building.
I did. The account was 7 years old. I'd deleted old comments a few times before, but this time i went all in and deleted everything and the account. I have an alt that I never posted from and rarely logged into. I'm going to delete it soon, just interested in what happens today and then probably delete it tonight.
Two key things to think about before pulling the plug:
Edit or delete your comment history. Spez confirmed in the AMA today that the turnaround on API pricing came when they realised how badly the AI bros need good content for their models and how much they would be willing to pay.
Consider selling your account. Old accounts with lots of karma can sell for a decent amount of cash. There are a few specific sites, or good old eBay if you’re cautious. If Reddit don’t care about how much harder it will be for mods to do their jobs in future, neither should we.
Haha, I saw someone suggest it today which came just in time for me.
I’m now going to start the editing side off tomorrow and then think about the selling side. I’m probably not going to hard delete my account either way as my experience with Twitter means I know that dead does mean dead to me (6 months clean!)
Also been on Reddit for more than 12 years now. But with recent development regarding third party apps, I've made my peace with it. As soon as those apps shut down, I'll abandon my Reddit account.
However, I'll not be going to delete my post and comments, since I don't see any sense in doing so. Reddit will not care as some kind of protest, and my data should have already been scraped by dozens of search engines and AI-training companies anyway.
been on reddit for over 12 yeaars, but i always abandon my accounts after a few years and start new ones to avoid having too much personal info on one account. Im using Redact to currently delete all my comments from my newest account that is a little over 2 years old, still in the process of deleting, currently at 700… this is gonna take a while
edit: done, 1185 comments gone! now doing the same with the account before that, currently at 1100 and still going!
I think I'll leave my Reddit account and not delete it. My account suddenly going silent, after 13 years of near-daily activity, at this of all times, ought to make the statement I wish to make.
I'm wondering whether I should post a goodbye message on my Reddit profile page with a link to my new home here on Lemmy. See if they have the audacity to ban me for “spamming” my own profile page. Even if they do, it'll be one of numerous accounts falsely banned for “spam” in the middle of a well-publicized uproar and mass migration away from Reddit, and that isn't fooling anyone. Either way, my statement is made.
I'm waiting on a data request for the rest of my history, though I did that 6mo ago for other reasons and still have it so if the delay is too long I'll just lose those months.
After that I'll probably keep my account for a while to spam about Lemmy until I get banned.
I will keep it and see. If Reddit decides to roll back the API changes and starts listening to the community, I'll probably keep using it. But if they don't, I'm conflicted.
Deleting it would be nice, because they lose their interactions, posts and data, which is what makes them money.
But there are also some posts with important answers to niche questions, and the random stranger looking that questions up in 3 years would also be affected.
So for now, I'll probably leave it abandoned and I'll see if I delete it when they make some more stupid changes.
Deleting the history was sad. I made backups of everything and pulled the trigger today, though I'm almost sad I won't be there to log-in tomorrow and see how barren it is with all the subreddits dark.
I have been too lazy to sign in and do it. What is funny is that I had been using Infinity to browse anonymously, but got annoyed that I could not bookmark anything.
I made an account like a month or two ago, and have barely posted anything. I could have done without.
Yet, if Reddit was not fucking up, I may not have given Lemmy a second chance. I tried it before, but I swear most of the posts were meta. Talking about a platform does not make a platform appealing.
Accounts are meaningless. Karma and upvotes are just buttons. They only hold meaning if you intentionally assign meaning to them. Just download the photos you’ve posted if you don’t have copies and be free of assigning real material qualities to fictional concepts, like some transient code that says your account is 6 years old with 1.6million karma.
I deleted all of my posts and comments from my 8 year old account today. Just need to 'export' saved videos and articles to some other apps and then I'll delete the actual account.
8 year old account just deleted, bye bye proffit driven communities. I really hope P2P and federated networks took over the internet and doom these data hoarders into oblivion
Haven't yet. I'm going dark when everyone else does, and I will uninstall the Reddit app when my third party app stops working. But there are some things that I can't do on Lemmy, and don't expect to be able to do for quite a long time - not until the user base is much larger.
Annoyingly, even thought I don't want to support Reddit. There is still going to be some useful things on Reddit, but I really hope most the community move over to here, or somewhere else.
I'm not, at most I'm gonna park it and just never use it again. If they want to delete it, they'll have to introduce an inactive account deletion policy
I’ve been a 10+ year user of Reddit with multiple accounts over the years. During that time, I’ve deleted accounts and created new ones for the sake of privacy. There is no value lost in these situations.
I'm not deleting it yet, since some subs I can't let go haven't come to Lemmy yet. As soon as that happens or if those subs migrate elsewhere, I'll remove Reddit
as someone pointed out in this comment, I don't think deleting all the content we generated thoughout the years is a good idea. I still get replies on years old posts from people who had that same exact question, and the amount of information I actively find on reddit is crazy. Reddit won't care about deleted accounts and posts (and they will only be a minority anyway), and I think doing so is a disservice to every person on the web.
Unless you only posted in r/memes and r/askreddit lol
I get that, but Reddit will be (and has already been) monetizing the content you created. They will also be selling the content to LLMs (large language models) to train AI models. So while I agree you are doing a disservice to people looking for useful content, you are also allowing Reddit / spez etc to monetize your content while giving a big finger to mods, volunteers, communities and 3rd party app developers.
I get where you're coming from, but I'm honestly so annoyed by the general trend of moving from openly accessible online forums to private channels over the recent years. Trying to find answers to many niche questions now often feels like being back in middle school and spending hours or days finding the right IRC channel - only now it's not IRC channels but discord servers.
Reddit can monetize my shit all they want, I'm not gonna contribute to that.
Just before I joined here, I deleted my posts and my account from reddit. Hopefully I don't need to visit the site very often anymore after today's shitshow.
Did it yesterday, and also removed all my comments and posts, but I didn't post that often - I have probably made 30-40 comments and posts in 2 years. However, I still use Reddit on my phone with Relay but logged out. When Reddit shuts down its free API I'll probably switch fully to Fediverse.
Haven't pulled the plug fully. But all my posts and comments are now deleted. I think I'll be checking infrequently after the blackout just to see where they end up. Maybe then I'll delete the account too.
As long as old.reddit exists and there is a large community, I'll be 'stuck' with Reddit. I'm not there for the platform - I'm there for the people. I'll go where the people go.
As far as mobile usage goes, I don't know. Without an 'Apollo for Lemmy' or 'Lemmy is Fun' - I'm hanging around waiting for something to happen.
Reddit is the longest I've had a social media account after Facebook - pushing my 12th year. And I've participated in a lot of social media and message boards that came and went.
In my experience, websites sites die quickly when leadership prioritizes scraping profits over a user experience. And look, I completely understand and respect that companies need to earn revenue. However, it's a two-way relationship. Users will always flock to a more streamlined and accessible experience.
It's why Pandora > Shoutcast/iTunes Radio. It's why Spotify > Pandora. And it's why Netflix > Blockbuster. It's why after years of using Fark.com for news engagement, I joined Reddit. It gave me a far superior experience (not that Fark was ever bad).
I really like Lemmy. And I like the concept of federated spaces. But whether or not the concept is a big enough draw is really to be determined - especially without knowing what the mobile experience looks like.
All this to say.. I'll delete my account when it's no longer relevant. If I can get truly unique food and drink recommendations for my local city here, with enthusiastic participants all joining in the conversation - that's what I'll need to bury the past 12 years of online activity.
Strongly considering it. I requested a dump of all my posts & comments there (going back to 2005!) and expect to be pulling out of there at the end of the month if this absurd situation isn't resolved.
I didn't quit Reddit. Reddit banned my favorite community because the shitposts were making their embedded national security goons too nervous. This was nearly 3 years ago.
Don't think I'll go as far as deleting my account as it still holds some sentimental value to it (things nearly 12 years old at this point) but as for browsing / general usage, yes, I've fully switched to Lemmy as my daily site. While there are a few niche subreddits I'll probably still periodically check in on the sites been going downhill for years now, and the most recent AMA / API tomfuckery made me jump ship to greener pastures.
Haven't gone scorched earth yet. Don't think I will, but I'll think twice before going back on the site. There's some things that are valuable, and I'll wait and see if they even stay valuable.
Deleted my accounts a few weeks ago. Over time, I’ve found the noise levels to be cyclical and I happened to hit a point of “why am I scrolling through this stuff?” The API nuttiness just reinforced that decision for me.
I had been without a Reddit account for a while using Infinity (3rd party app) without being logged in. I didn't care about being able to post of comment but it's much more fun on Lemmy! Lemmy is much nicer than Reddit in my opinion and I'll end up stopping using Reddit completely
I'm probably not going to get rid of my reddit account entirely, at least not until I get some better means of reading the news. Definitely not using it on mobile though, the official app is atrocious
I haven't and I won't. As much as I hate the API changes and as much as I hate being forced to use the terrible official app, there are communities on Reddit that won't be going dark indefinitely that I am an active part of and wish to remain part of.
Lemmy is a great concept in theory, but in practice it leads to what was a single community on Reddit being spread over several instances. A community with tens of thousands on Reddit might find a few communities spread over a handful of instances and because a community doesn't show up in the Communities list under All until someone does the [email protected] command for that specific community (meaning they physically went to other instances to find that community on that other instance and then in practice manually added it to the list)
This also means that as the amount of instances grows, specific communities will become even harder to find as the instances themselves become more obscure and hard to find.
Maybe I'm being naive, but I still have some hope that the blackout will cause Reddit to reverse their decision, or at least be open to re-negotiating with the 3PA devs. I'm exploring alternatives either way.
Not yet. I'm waiting to watch it all fall apart. Definitely going to suck losing out on so many communities. But I'm no longer interested in the direction its going and have been using boost for a decade to browse. I rarely use reddit on desktop and refuse to use their bloated app. It's strayed so far from its original design philosophy that deleting it probably won't hurt all that much.
That's where I'm at. I think I like this place more than tildes from what I've seen.
There's still a few niche things that warrant keeping my account and using old.reddit for the time being. Mainly, I get most of my local city news from the local sub - I don't think Lemmy will ever be able to replace that
Really gave me the push I needed to figure out Mastodon, and through Mastodon I found kbin and lemmy. These platforms have a long way to go, but it really seems like the big central platforms are losing more and more ground every day as users search for alternatives.
I did - this rings too reminiscent of Twitter for me. I really dislike the native app, and the desktop app is all but unusable on my devices (why? I have no idea, we’re talking recent MacBooks with the m-series processors and gaming PC’s…). I also really dislike ads, and while I think there were options available to pay Reddit for no ads (premium?) it didn’t feel like my subscription money was going to the right place since Reddit is all user generated content. Unlike platforms like YouTube, where the users who create the content openly discuss how their revenue is generated, I’m not even sure the money I would pay to Reddit for premium would benefit the content creators on their site. So yeah, I’m really not going to struggle to use Reddit anymore. RIP Apollo.
Not quite, but I also don’t really want to go back to reddit. I’m seeing some great alternatives on the rise, so I can sense I’ll be deleting the profile at some point. Just haven’t pulled that trigger yet.
I have deleted Apollo off of my phone, but I plan to still use the few tiny sub reddit communities that I enjoy. However, I am actively avoiding r/all and major subs that are just meme factories.
Not yet. I want to, though. I want to try saving down everything I've saved over the past 10 years. Once I do that, then I'll feel comfortable deleting it.
Just waiting on a data request download for submissions (through reddits data request if there isn't a faster way) and noting/making my last few communities on Lemmy, then I'll be on my way out. Didn't expect to clear it this soon but life hits pretty fast sometimes.
I just pulled the plug and deleted my account but to be honest, I was mostly a lurker who mostly upvoted (or downvoted on occasions!) posts over there.
I want to transition off of Reddit but I'm not deleting my account because I feel like there's too much valuable information on the site to get rid of it all just yet.
If you don't delete your account, you should REALLY consider selling it. One: You get more money than you would think is reasonable for a stupid Reddit account, Two: It's not going to be used for a good reason which only hurts Reddit. Win win right?
I’ll go back for specific things like I’d go to any website looking for a solution for an issue after googling.
I’m not browsing Reddit anymore. Place is cancer. Even before all this API stuff I was over the nfts, the unimaginative meta humor, the predictable and repetitive nature of every top comment, the puns, the thirsty comments every time someone looks somewhat attractive, the hostility, etc. Reddit feels like I’m reading chatgpt now.
I’ll miss the smaller subreddits. Hopefully they’ll come soon. That’s where interesting conversations occurred.
I don’t know when I’ll delete my account. I have a lot of “saved” items I don’t want to lose yet. If I don’t find myself using those saves after a bit I’ll delete everything.
Completely agree. I’ve hated the site for years because of all the crap they were adding to the new site, and how the larger subs were everything wrong with the internet, but there was nowhere else like it if you wanted community-based social media rather than individual user-based.
Glad I can finally leave without looking back
Planning on deleting my alt accounts, however I'm not going to delete my main account, I will just programmatically delete all my posts and comments.
I suspect that deleting accounts won't be what Reddit is looking at anyway, all they'll care about is ad revenue, and my accounts which were not generating any revenue will not bother them in the slightest.
Editing and deleting comments is about taking some life, interactions and knowledge off the platform so it will lower the value of the platform.
Deleting knowledge off the internet isn't something i endorse, but everyone can decide for themselves.
I deleted the apps on my phone and my ipad so I don't get any push notifications.
I will probably only post on here. There are some communities I kinda rely on when it comes to information, tutorials etc. that are not really existing here. So I'm trying to kinda slowly move everything over here as far as I can do that. Hoping that more and more communites will be coming over too.
I honestly prefer the interface and how clean everything is here. Makes me wanna use reddit as little as possible lmao
I deleted my accounts earlier this week (before the AMA). I decided I could just make a new one in the future if that ever was a thing, and I’d rather not contribute to their line charts of “active users”, and rather would appear on those for “accounts deleted in the last 30 days”.
For me it was a symbolic reminder that I don’t want to lurk there and deleting my account was an action I remember. I hope they follow the direction of Twitter and Instagram by making the platform unusable without an account, further cementing more barriers for me.
I am watching the show and will keep doing that till 30th. It feels like a social experiment, I am curious to see how different sub-communities will react. Sort if similar to what happened with twitter, the day elon pulled a spez I deleted my account.
I hadn't really actively engaged with Reddit in years, and I stopped lurking almost cold turkey when they killed off the personal homepage on the mobile web interface earlier this year. I deleted my account when the Apollo news broke (I've never even used a third-party app, but it's crystal-clear what direction the wind is blowing). I only found out about lemmy after I pulled the plug.
Now to figure out how mastodon and all the other "fediverse" apps work :-)
Just deleted RiF in anticipation of the blackout. Ill check it again on the first of next month and if it doesn't exist or work ill be gone for good. Going to suck, mainly need to find a new source for news, possibly on youtube or here, just enough to be up to date.
I haven't yet, but will do on the 30th (after running Redact) before Sync stops working. What I have done is requested my data, removed all the posts and customisation from the subs I moderate (r/fryup being the biggest at 30k users) and set them to private.
I've been a long time user on Reddit. Just deleted all my posts and comments (been mostly a lurker, so not much there) using shreddit, then deleted my Reddit account and uninstalled the app (Boost - loved it) from my phone. I'm done with Reddit, the AMA and behaviour of u/spez and the other Reddit admins was just too much.
I hope I get some time back from stupidly browsing Reddit, but also don't want to miss out on some of the communities (r/adventofcode specifically, hope they make it over to Lemmy at some point).
I used the power delete suite to get a backup of all my shit, change all comments to "bye reddit" and then delete them. I'm done with reddit unless spez is gone and they back track waaaay the fuck back
I did,it was hard cause it had 10 years of memories on it but these new changes and the way leadership is acting I know if I where to not delete them I would come crawling back at some point rather just quit cold turkey
I've been lurking on regularly cycled usernames, so that was pretty easily done. I haven't deleted Slide yet, but since it'll stop working on 30th, that's a given.
I'm going to try my best to help build up the niche communities like hardware focused ones on lemmy
I won't delete my account, atleast not in the foreseeable future. Won't install the official app though and stop using reddit on mobile entirely. There's just so much resources and old content available on reddit, and a lot that I've saved, that's next to impossible to migrate anywhere. I'll keep my account for that, and just that so I can access it when I need to.
I was always a lurker on Reddit so I don’t have to worry about purging post or comment history. I literally just haven’t gotten around to deleting it yet.
I’ll miss the more local niche communities, but they’ll show up here and in other places in time.
I still have my account and I don't plan on deleting but much like my Twitter account it'll just be there. I'll check it for the few people and communities that stay behind.
June 30th is my date. I have a 13 year old account and a 8 year old account. I'm considering options what to do with the accounts. I'm split between selling them or nuking all the comments and deleting them.
I’m probably gonna keep my account but only use it on desktop with Ad blocker. If they break it with ad blocker I might delete but not sure. It’s hard to delete something I’ve been using for so long but I’ll definitely not use their shitty mobile app
I don't plan on deleting my reddit accounts to be honest, I put way too much work in them, plus they have some saved posts that I really need and use as a reference from time to time. Also, there are some communities there that I don't believe will shift over here (for some, I am sure they won't, since they're other not that big amd moderation is not a problem for them), so I'll mostly be using Lemmy and Reddit interchangeably.
I have. And i would love for it to be permanent, but that's going to depend on if Lemmy continues to build content. At the end of the day, I like this platform but without content I won't stay. Current momentum is looking fantastic though, and I will continue to comment and add my pieces!
I plan to, but I also plan to do it fully - going through saved links and bookmarking or documenting relevant recipes/guides/etc, removing all the comment history, etc etc.
I'm not really good at doing that in a timely manner. I have so many big projects, and smaller projects, that have been postponed for so long. It's just another thing on the list.
I have not deleted it yet in hopes that they will roll back / cancel the api changes. I will not be using it until they do however. Lemmy seems like a really wholesome place so far.
Just did it yesterday after realizing that the only real use Reddit got was bookmarking funny cats and doom scrolling. Twitter is next, just gotta save some "useful media" first
Whenever I saved the "useful" stuff of something, I later realized I never looked at it again or even if I did it wasn't all that important. The monkey brain just likes to hoard.
I've deleted my comments and posts and find Reddit then restored them a few hours later.
So I've written some Python to delete them automatically and have it run on a schedule. Fuck 'em. A week later and Reddit are still restoring my data for the script to delete.
I did a week ago, before all this went down. Just kept having terrible experiences interacting with people. After 15 years on reddit I was done with it. Deleted my account immediately. Then followed by regret for not backing up my saved section or removing my old comments. :(
I don't really want to delete content potential googlers could stumble upon and be helped by, but I've replaced the Relay shortcut on my homescreen with a Jerboa shortcut. That's as good as deleted cause that's all I access reddit through.
I deleted the app but not my account. I thought about going back someday, but honestly I don't think I will. The last few days without reddits pessimistic view (at least how I see it) have actually been great.
Already deleted all content a couple of years ago and was just lurking. Did notice that it became a chore, especially when boys became prevalent. Forced closure of 3rd party apps was the straw that broke this camels back. It’s a shame because it’s been roughly ten years or so and Reddit truly devolved
Purged everything this morning bar for one last comment on the Apollo thread. Currently using kbin.social - exploring my options, but I wont be returning to Reddit.
After six or seven years on Reddit, I finally deleted it and have removed it from my bookmarks. It's a little unusual trying to find communities for certain things I only used Reddit for, but I like it nonetheless.
I see no particular need to delete my account or any of its content, personally. I know it's everybody's own decision but frankly it strikes me as kind of needlessly destructive, like torching a restaurant because you no longer enjoy eating there. Other people still do, there's no reason to take it from them.
If Reddit evolves in such a way that I no longer find it useful or enjoy going there, I'll just stop. I'm actually happy if my old data remains useful to others - lots of times I go searching Google for information and wind up in an old Reddit thread, for example.
No, but I'm migrating most of my usage here. Some small subreddits will probably never be replicated here and I like talking about smaller games and bands sometimes.
My account is one I made for work related purposed and has ~140 karma with very little identifiable information about me. I won't delete it, but I'm no longer using Reddit as a time-waster. I'm diversifying and have signed up here, kbin, Mastodon and PixelFed.
I plan to, and almost certainly will by the end of the month.
I'm sticking around just long enough to see how the blackout goes and to watch a bit of the resulting dumpster fire after tho.
i did it using a free program called redact, you log into your reddit account thru it and select a bnuch of parameters and filters if you want, or just set it to delete every comment from your profile.
shreddit - you need to register for an API key (client ID actually) and download the app, but it is very simple and available for MacOS, Linux and Windows. It's using the API to delete your posts and comments, you can do a dry run to see what will get deleted.
The cherry on top of the cake is that it using the much discussed API, so use it while it is still free and give spez the finger by deleting your content using his precious API.
I've barely got any posts on there, so I've kind of just left my account for now. I'll purge it later on once I feel like all of my niche communities I need are elsewhere.
I however, do not visit it more than once a day now though, and I expect that frequency to drop-off (primarily for local level news right now - too small to expect them to migrate elsewhere for now)
I am also hesitant to remove everthing. Maybe someone for example has the same question I once had. If Reddit holds on to their decisions I will probably delete the app though.
15 years is a long time. Still, once I saw that /r/programming was private it made it easier to abstain but I dont think I am going to bite the bullet just yet
Yep, I had been teetering, I like the idea of a FOSS public solution. I still fondly remember nntp before it was ruined. It reminds me of Reddit in many ways.
Haven’t pulled the plug but edited then deleted all of my comment history, unsaved all of my saves, and got situated with Lemmy (testing Mlem), in preparation. I’ll pull the plug on the 30th. Let me just say the transition so far has been better than expected. It took a bit for the sign up to get approved and the servers to catch up, but I think we will be just fine.
I'm holding out with some copium for now. There's some local subs and niche subs that I'd like to still follow that will likely not migrate. I'll likely switch to RSS and old.reddit only once RIF dies and Lemmy and mastodon will likely be my mobile social media. I don't mind using multiple social media apps, but it'd be great to have it all in one place.
After the AMA yesterday, I made the decision to delete all of my posts and comments. I'm not sure I see a reason todeletee my account altogether as I think not giving traffic to Reddit is more important, so I left everything else the way it is. Maybe one of these days I'll go back through and delete everything for good.
All that said, like most other people here, I have no intention of going back, especially after yesterday, unless there's some sort of drastic change which is very unlikely.
Deleted account history like many others (after a GPDR and manual export of everything). Going to delete my account just before the 30th, as I won't be able to use it anyway. For now I'm still somewhat lurking on Reddit, so to keep my list of subscribed subreddits, I have not deleted my account yet.
I haven’t yet. I’ll probably keep using Reddit until June 30th besides maybe the protest days next week. I’m not sure if I’ll delete my accounts after June 30th or not though in case I need them for a one-off use case in the future.
I will say that it’d be easier to delete my accounts now than a couple years ago. A couple years ago, I was trying to make sure I never lost access to my original Reddit account by changing my password to be more secure, but my password manager failed to save the new password. I got locked out of my original nearly 10 year old Reddit account with a bit of a rare username. The only reason I have access to it now is it’s still logged in through Apollo, but I guess I’ll lose it forever on June 30th. I guess it doesn’t matter if I’m trying to move here anyways.
I've deleted everything I posted/comment and my account yesterday. Granted Ive had already done this a couple years ago so this account wasn't that valuable.
It will be a while until I consider Reddit replaced for me. There I subscribe to a ton of subs with only a few thousand people. Even if all of these already existed here, it would take some time to find them.
I didn't delete it but I stop using it for now. I will hold for a few months to see how things develop and decide what to do next. I use Reddit mostly due to Developer communities (Android, Kotlin, etc) which doesn't seem to exist in Lemmy, yet.
I hope the communities migrate here with time but overall, I'm finding the servers a little confusing and the Android app has space to improve.
I yeeted my account today. I've used reddit for ~10 years now. It's sad about some niche communities and inside-jokes, but if people keep using lemmy i'm sure they will find their way here eventually.
I didn't delete my account, but my local community and I have switched to Discord and Lemmy. I think I'm now spending more time on these two services than on Reddit.
I deleted all my comments and posts on my main (12 yr) and alt (4 yr) accounts, and also fully deleted my alt. I'm also finding it hard to fully deleted my main as of now, so I'm keeping it to keep an eye on the collapse of everything. Once baconreader stops working I'll delete my account for good, and I've already hidden the app on my phone so I can't easily open it anymore (and put Lemmy in it's place).
But I won't delete the accounts because fuck them, they don't get to recycle those. I could delete the account under this name, because it was just my alt for moderating, and it's such an inside joke that only maybe five people would get that it isn't worth deleting.
No, there's too many little niche subreddits that lemmy doesn't even come close to replicating. I have been using the official reddit app for the better part of a year so I'm not personally affected by the ban on 3rd party apps.
