Yeah, I don't exactly understand how but RIF is working for me, despite the fact you can't log into it. I only kept it as a momento, but it still works as long as you have the subs you want to see memorized...
The problem is you can't get any actual doctors to help make it medically sound on account of that whole "do no harm" thing they're supposed to uphold, so you end up with quacks that use a functionally random set of drugs that make it appear to the crowd as a painless way to die when in actuality its one of the most brutally painful possible ways to die.
I think it's theoretically possible, but not actually possible. Like bare minimum walking back the API changes, apologies to the developers they've slandered, maybe throw in a spez gets fired: that'd get back like 50 percent of people who are mad.
Of course, to do any of this spez would have to not be spez, so it won't happen.

It had hard coded censorship. It got removed because it ran into the Scunthorpe problem and also was blocking certain nonenglish words that were slurs in english. I believe now there's a configurable file you can set for your own filter now.
I definitely agree that the algorithm needs some work. Maybe someday lemmy instances will be able to have customizable variables like "post staling rate" or "karma to recency ratio" or something in that ballpark.
I said this elsewhere, but this isn't the end of reddit. The end of reddit will be when everyone on the site says "God i'm tired of all these fediverse/(some shittier platform) reposts, why am I even here?"

I wonder if it wouldn't be wise to try and emulate some of the easier/more participatable subreddits here. Askreddit theads for instance are a big pull (even if they tend to be. well, redditors post on them use your imagination).

Arguably its even better than BBS with per-comment replies and the already mentioned only needing one account thing. I big time miss BBS forums, maybe this'll be my new home.

The way it was explained to me was its kinda like email, you dont need to have a yahoo email to email someone on yahoo, you just need to have any email. You can pick an instance that you like the UI of the best or whatever and then access whatever fediverse content you want.
