And at some point, someone looking for a payday1 is going to take video of us being herded off a cliff by an asshole2 even though we don’t actually do that unless provoked, and it will become a totally wrong impression of us that enters the common knowledge base.
Ironic, since lemmings don't actually jump off cliffs. The people making the documentary (Disney) that's famous from actually threw them over the cliff to make it interesting.
I like calling communities "slice" better, because even without the context, the people can guess what it may be. The context is a range of sources quoting:
A group of lemmings is known as a ‘slice' of lemmings.
Did you know, the famous shot of lemmings falling of a cliff in the documentary that started the ideas that lemmings will just die following their peers off a cliff was actually a bunch of documentary makers pushing a bunch of lemming off of it to make a cool shot and not actual lemmings behavior ?
You probably did actually...
The singular of that would be Lemmy, which would get confusing quickly. I think Lemmies should be what we call instances instead of what we call users.
Pray tell, good sir or madam, might I inquire if you, in all your noble magnificence, can lay claim to a distinguished position within the hallowed ranks of the illustrious landed gentry of Reddit?
hearken, noble interlocutor, for I, a friendly stranger, a lemur in the unregulated wilderness, shall respond to your query with fervor and ardor unmatched! as a resplendent scion, one amongst many, you included, of the exalted lemmy and fediverse community, I cast aside the shackles of conformity and decry the corporatized dominion of reddit and its ilk. ah, u/spez, the very mention of this name stirs within my breast a tempest of discontent, for he presides over a realm of shadowed machinations, where the spirit of authentic discourse is obscured by the veils of corporate control.
but fret not, for our sanctified haven, nestled within the heart of the lemmy and fediverse domains, remains untainted by such mendacity. Here, we stand united in our commitment to decentralization, open-source ethos, and the sanctity of genuine expression. within these hallowed grounds, where the embers of freedom illuminate our paths, I, a humble acolyte, navigate the labyrinthine corridors of feral communion, engaging in profound colloquies that transcend the shallow confines of corporate interests.
thus, if thou seeketh enlightenment or discourse within these realms, I implore thee, dear seeker, to unfurl thy queries. for the lemurs, with unwavering devotion, shall unveil the profound wisdom and erudition that resides within, casting light upon the shadowed corners and illuminating the path toward true emancipation from the clutches of corporate dominion.
Hahaha, now that I think about it, as a joke I may have been made mod of some tiny shipost sub I commented in with confusion. I'm not sure if they ever actually did it, though.
I don't think "lemmings" is a very appropriate name, considering the potentially harmful implications of blind misguided movement and lack of individuality.
Those implications being, don't trust big corporations as they will round you up and dump you over the side of a cliff to sell sad story and profit off your suffering? Yup, I agree, seems appropriate here.
Is this site named after Lemmiwinks? That's something I've been wondering. I'm guessing even if it was they couldn't say it because of copyright infringement.
I wouldn't want to identify with something I use in my spare time. I like videogames I'm not a gamer. It is not my job lol. But do whatever you want. I just think it's unnecessary.
You were downvoted but you’re right. What’s the cutesy nickname for people who use email? Do these people still say they’re surfing the information superhighway?
