I also like to joke and laugh at the meme of Valve can't do the number 3. But, honestly, I'd rather they worked on something new, creative and innovative. Counter Strike 2 is alright, but it's the exact same game and formula from 20 years ago. It makes for more fun and compelling games when you can tell the devs are having fun coming up with something they are exited about making.
Something like CS2 is different though, because it's a standard. People like it that way, they're used to playing it and they just want it modernized.
That's why we have AoE2, AoE2:HD and AoE2:Definitive, and also why after hundreds of years nobody decided to come up with Soccer 2: The Soccering. But we do make soccer balls out of polymers instead of animal bladders now.
Everyone likes new compelling ideas but also there's a space to continue support for older and popular ones.
Half-Life 2 ended on a massive cliffhanger. It's like ending Lord of the Rings right after the uruk-hai enters Helms Deep, of course people would be annoyed and ask where the rest of the story is.
Sadly I used to want hl3, for that same reason. Now I don't care anymore, over moved on. It's like the last book of game of thrones, who cares anymore 20 years later?
