Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) took on her X social media account to criticize Tom Homan, President Donald Trump's border czar, over his comments on a "Know Your Rights with ICE" webinar that she hosted on her Facebook page.
Summary
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticized Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, after he suggested her "Know Your Rights with ICE" webinar could be illegal.
The event informed immigrants about their rights during ICE raids. Homan claimed the webinar might impede immigration enforcement and said he was working with the DOJ to determine legal action.
AOC dismissed his remarks, stating, "Maybe he can learn to read. The Constitution would be a good place to start."
She continues to oppose Trump’s immigration policies, including efforts to revoke birthright citizenship.
Dems would need a majority first. Then they'd have to agree to get rid of Jeffries (who has only been Minority Leader at this point and unlikely to let go without a fight).
I swear, this site is full of people who have no fucking clue how US politics works in the real world.
That took me entirely too long. I had to question why the hell you took a picture of your computer looking at this post. Presumably from your phone, which you presumably uploaded the picture from, instead of just taking a screenshot.
"Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect."
Yeah it's "I want people to stop acting like I'm a jerk when I say mean things", "but I also want them to not be able to say mean things about me, cuz that isn't fair to me". And yes, it should sound like a toddler having a temper tantrum. Including a complete misunderstanding of the entire concept of fairness.
Ahh...see...there's the rub...your answer is literally the first word of the first amendment.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances
Congress ain't doing shit. Executive unitary theory means the Constitution is about as legally binding as a Dear Abby letter.
She needs to keep going. She needs to speak to them the same way they speak to everyone else. She needs to use every bit of her position to mother fuck these cowards at every turn. Call them out, and show their ignorance every single fucking time and in every single fucking forum.
She needs to demand her coworkers do the same. She needs to shame them when they don't or when they compromise. The time for pleasantries is long past.
If she does, others will follow, but it will be dangerous, so I understand if she just keeps doing what she is doing. It is at least miles more than most of them.
Bla bla bla, man shouts at clouds, but no one listens.
You're right. She's the only one or at most one of less than a handful of Democrats that are actually DOING something with their platform to resist the fascists, rather than just doing rousing speeches for the cameras, fundraising emails and fuckall else.
If the Dem leadership were more like her, even if they retained the same crappy Neoliberal policy positions, things would never have gotten anywhere near this bad in the first place.
I've always wonder why the US uses a title from Imperial Russia to refer to the heads of special activity like drug czar and border czar. No seriously, any ideas why?
It’s a term that indicates a leader, and its origins are thousands of years before imperial Russia.
It’s a derivative of the Latin “Caesar”, and many cultures have used the term (or its derivatives) to indicate a leader. Pre-Weimar Germany was led by the Kaiser, a German adaptation of the title.
I always assumed it was derogatory because I only heard it used on Fox News* in reference to Democratic cabinet members.
*Not watching it voluntarily, my idiot parent has hearing loss and has the TV on full volume whenever I visit. The Fox logo is literally burned into the TV.
Yeah! At the local monthly illegal alien meeting! Durrr.
Here's a question for you, if we have a 4th amendment, why do we have to deal with cops just knocking on doors asking for papers without a warrant? My time has no value? Can I bill them my hourly consultant rate?
He wasn't in command of ICE under Obama. He was just commended for being a good employee under Obama. Trump made him a "border czar" (whatever the fuck that means). He apparently chaffed under the Obama administration's more lax policies when it came to border security and is much happier under Trump. Clearly to the detriment of everyone who isn't white.
Every serious group already moved to mastodon and we are talking on lemmy. She has million of followers already and isn't even trying, she's part of the establishment.
Social media contributes to the polarization of public discourse and should absolutely be boycotted. However, this polarization manifests in various ways, and your comment is a good example of this. When everything becomes a purity test, we fall into extremism. To counter the rise of fascism, you must be willing to unite with those who do not share your opinions.
