TIL: Amazing Process of Cutting Gigantic Volcanic Glass to Make Crystal Balls
Video of people making crazy crystal balls
I cannot possibly imagine not doing this job in a fully sealed deep diving suit with a hepa filter and chainmail from head to toe.
Silicosis is a fucking nightmare on par with mesothelioma and emphysema.
66 0 ReplyHonestly, this is actually one of the times where the satirical word pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis is actually applicable!?
35 1 ReplyYeah, the N95's are a good step, but probably not enough. Some people weren't wearing masks at all.
Also, It didn't look like any of the saws had good safety stops, the angle-grinders were taped down, and the guy cutting the balls seemed to be really close to getting a (gloved) hand sucked into the saw.
Definitely not the worst safety, but people are definitely getting hurt at this job site. And this is what they considered good enough to show on Youtube, so probably worse than we think...
Very cool balls though.
25 0 Reply… what's the chainmail protecting against?
7 0 ReplyPuncturing the diving suit, and also psychological reassurance being near that massive saw.

Does volcanic glass really look like that? Perhaps it's just glass slag from a factory.
25 0 ReplyIt's slag.
28 0 ReplyThe only type of (natural) volcanic glass found in appreciable quantities is obsidian. I don't know of any others at all.

Thumbnail looks dope, here’s the URL without Google’s shady little tracker if you wanna edit it in:
Edit: this is so cool

3 0 ReplyUnderstandable, I would have left the original title intact as well. A real enjoyable video, thanks for posting.

My lungs itched after watching that video.

Not making a future pun.
6 0 ReplyA de-gloving injury just waiting to happen.

... Huh? No, we don't have that, but we do have "oh shit!" as in "Oh shit I lost another finger!"
3 0 ReplyDo they have an Etsy?
2 0 ReplyThere must be easier (and safer) ways to make novelty bowling balls.
