I think for now it's fine with whoever is up around midnight. I was a big supporter of the midnight smile club :D, starting a new thread is a similar thing. No need to bust your chops over it at the moment.
But learning to create a bot to post a new thread automatically is just the first step in my cunning plan. I will then be able to move on to creating my own personal bot army. First we will take over the Aussie Zone, then all of Lemmy World will be mine!!! I will throw all the people off and have pristine communities filled entirely with perfect, rule-following robots. Oh, wait, did I say that bit out loud š¤
It's all good! I was just up at 12:30 and saw one hadn't been posted yet so I did the honours. I think it's fine with whoever is up before one is listed don't the posting, but obviously finding a way to automate that process would probably be best in the long term
Instead of a roster everyone on the old DT at midnight could vote for someone to do it. It is just a new post so doesn't require anything special to do, although I think it needs a mod to actually pin it which can be done later.
Once upon a time there was a pretty cool nightclub. It was quite a swanky place. It had its regulars, drop ins and lurkers. It was open to everyone 24 hours 7 days a week. But one day the owners decided that the management wasn't that important so management organised a mutiny. They closed the main dance floor and kept the VIP area open but still that wasn't enough. So they closed the place baracading themselves in. Some patrons were confused as to why they weren't allowed access anymore. Where's everybody gone? Where do I go now?
Then some bright spark said "I know a place. Follow me". Now this new place wasn't as flash as the last (I think it was an old factory in the back streets of the industrial area in Footscray) but it was free and it was safe. At first a few trickled in to have a look around. Then word got around and more and more turned up. The old lurkers turned up to cause a stir but generally everyone's been happy to have a regular place to meet again.
P.s.There's always that dodgy looking guy in the corner with a leather jacket on chewing his gum and selling shit.
Iām so grateful the DT lives on. I donāt have a large social circle and it really helps seeing friendly faces/ usernames with lil chats & updates. š¤
Me too! My social circle could fit around my pinky finger, but the DT became my home away from home. This place might be different, but at least the company is the same <3
Had to make a decision to fire someone today. Haven't actioned it yet, but got approved by one of the big dogs.
Tried so hard to give them a chance with written warning and performance improvement plan, but they think everyone else is the problem, they're carrying their department, and that everyone around them is too sensitive.
Hard decision to make in this climate but I've got a whole team to look after that don't deserve being bullied.
Feel more confident than ever in this job when my tough calls are backed like this.
Hey, you've got to act in the interests of your whole team, and it sounds like they'll be a better team for it. You never know, that person's next job might end up being a better fit for them.
Hello DT, happy housewarming for the new residence. This platform is going to take me a bit of getting used to. But nice to see so many familiar names. Thankyou very much to @[email protected] and anyone else who did the work to make this happen. I appreciate your tech skills and initiative!
Edit: I have no idea how to tag people properly, hope that was it.
Yes the tag worked! @[email protected] is the one who set this place up, I just followed them here and made myself at home when I saw @dumblederp@[email protected] had made a daily thread here!
Plan to use this shutdown as a prompt to spend more time off my computer: failed
I came to create a new /melbourne, as there was already one here I made a new DT. I also created one at kbin but that doesn't seem as popular. I just wanted everyone to have a place to hangout. I understand the protest reasons but I don't agree with the method.
I looked at it Monday I think and was a bit put off by the lack of numbers. But Tuesday morning, it became apparent the writing on the Wall and figured I may as well help get started or build the numbers. Rome wasnāt built in a day and all that.
I can only speak for myself but I took the 12-14 blackout as a way to detox a little from my overuse of Reddit. Came back to some messages from a few (Thanks @[email protected] and @[email protected] ) saying this is where most have migrated to.
But yeah, I do wonder if we've missed some people given the DT has completely shut down.
I am upset about the loss of our previous sub and DT, I didn't even get a chance to thank people and say goodbye. However, I'm hoping this will actually turn out better. The people who are really determined to keep the community together are here.
Good point! I guess thereās just a chance some might not have seen the link to try, and even though i saw it before midnight it didnāt let me comment at all. It was already cut off even before the blackout time. So Iām bummed at how poorly planned it was. First world problem I know but the DT has been a haven.
My husband has come home with a lemon meringue pie slice just to cheer me up and because he's been using my car. I don't mind receiving payments in the form of dessert.
Don't laugh but it's from Lazy Moe's. They get their cakes from somewhere else. They have the best lemon meringue I've ever had. They also they have mars bar cake.
just as a PSA, if you're thinking 'a smoothie with a not quite ripe banana will still be ok', you need to go to the nearest mirror and say to yourself 'no, no it will not be ok'
It's officially been a week since I decided to learn Dutch, and my ability to introduce myself now rivals that of a toddler. I will say I am having so much fun with it! Also, I've found focusing on direct translation has really helped me with recognising word order and the patterns that come with that. Although I sometimes still get "en" and "een" mixed up, especially when I'm practising writing.
From what I understand a native/fluent Dutch speaker would mostly be able to understand someone speaking Afrikaans, but a native/fluent Afrikaans speaker would probably not be able to understand someone speaking Dutch.
Like for me Good Morning is Goedemorgen, Afrikaans like you said is Goie More.
I keep thinking someone picked the ugly room for this meeting. I've had a bad back the past week so I'm just being bitchy but I'm gonna try to be more cheery because I'm feeling a little better.
Isn't it? Between that and having been up until almost midnight screenshotting, I think today's a good day to putter around and home and light a fire soonish. Which will make the cats very very happy.
Heard back from jaybberwocky and dressedlike. They might pop their heads in when they have time. Pinged lemon as well. I think thatās almost everyone yeah? We should established migration buddies haha
just_kitten, ghostghost, big-yeti, mycatsnameisgibson, a bunch of others too.. wholesome seeing this platform actually work, hopefully everyone that might want to join knows about it
Just noticed that the blackout on Reddit means I can't even access my older comments - there's a couple of others that I'm trying to remember their exact handle to see if I can hit them up on Reddit and send them this way. I think I saw Steve00 in here though.
The downvoter is like the unopened box of stuff you've brought with you for the last three house moves. You no longer know whats in it, you keep it in the car hole, you move it every time.
years ago (like 30+) our family moved back to Melbourne from the UK. We opened our seafreight boxes 3months later to find the packers had fully packed the kitchen - including all the food in the fridge, vegetables, ham and other obvious perishables - that is certainly a box i would never want to open again
Got final practice tonight for my dance troupe performance next Wednesday night, things are feeling pretty good and im looking forward to performing :)
In other news - still absolutely buzzing from the BABYMETAL gig on the weekend. There's something to be said about three Jyoshi's singing about unification and becoming one with a single source, while the words WALL OF DEATH flash up on the screens behind them. The crowd parted like the Red Sea before Moses before complete chaos ensued. 10/10 - easily top five gigs of all time for me.
So true - we didn't know that gig was on at the same time and just figured there were a lot more Idol fans coming along, until we peeled off and started seeing far more metal heads, spiked jackets and teased hair haha.
Lol theres a guy in my tea community who veers from good to bad and every time ive blocked him hes becomes better and then ive unblocked him and he gets worse so im just leaving him blocked this time
I can't help myself but go and check out Hot posts in /r/all occasionally. Quality and variety has dropped off massively since shutdown, pretty interesting to see.
Today's challenge: trying to figure out how to make a bot. I can find some great examples of what coding to use, but I am still trying to find anything to tell me where to actually put that code. Hopefully I can work it out and get an automated Daily Thread set up in the near future. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it!
I have been looking at that, and it has lots of great information about what code to use, but it does not have anything about where you use it. I get the impression it is basic information that most people doing that sort of thing already know, so they don't talk about it. Sort of like finding lots of detailed shoelace tying instructions when what you are trying to find out is where to find a shoe š¤£
I really hate past me right now. Stupid cow decided to volunteer to do overtime tomorrow, so now I'm sitting here contemplating the fact I have to get up stupidly early tomorrow morning.ā¹ļø
The whole blackout things feels like a kid trying to hold their breath until they get their own way. Reddit corp doesn't care and I expect the moderation of major subs to get handed over to people willing to work with their system.
If the mods are correct in saying they canāt moderate through the first party app, let alone removing the bot mods I kind of get their point. For the larger subs moderation is going to become untenable.
I feel more for those who are disabled who need tools like Apollo to be able to navigate throughout the site. It's bare minimum but people really don't give a flying frick against disabled people.
Have to say with how abrupt the DT went it reminds me of a naughty audio software torrent site called audiofarm I was a member over a decade ago. Was the biggest audio private tracker. One morning wake up and it gone without a trace. The freakout was real. All that knowledge, the ratio..
A few days later and a new tracker started and all was well.
I had a similar experience with what.cd, it might have been a replacement torrent site for audiofarm? Invite-only, and it was a music lover's dream. Had to keep a positive upload/download ratio. A catalogue bigger than streaming services. I contributed for years. Then one day without any warning, gone. Its servers got seized by the authorities in whatever country they were based. Replacements popped up pretty quickly.
You know when you fantasise of saying it like it is to your employer? Well, I did that today (within reason). Nothing insulting or anything, but some very stern feedback given. Communicating various issues with my role and management decisions that another person would have probably just resigned over. It felt SO GOOD. Adrenaline was flowing. Let's see if things improve from this, if not I'm done. I am trying to salvage the situation.
twas an exodus of redditors leaving the platform,
many subs are restricted, many more are private.
the protest continues, a desperate cry for reform,
with the DT closed down, r/melbourne went quiet.
some went to discord, others flocked here
to vent, to query, to share, and commiserate
thank you to those who set up this sphere,
though new to me, to all of you I appreciate.
Mods shutdown the sub over the app/api issue. EDIT: some more loop, reddit admins seem to have hired some business types who'r looking to turn a profit. As such, reddit is charging a fortune for third party apps to access the reddit API (backdoor control centre). The third party apps turn a profit off their advertising, reddit claims it does not make a profit. e2: more loop, so a bunch of subreddits are "going dark" in protest.
People are also doing a blackout for accessibility options. Most say that a lot of 3rd party apps are good for modding compared to the official app. Reddit says that none of the bots that use their API is going away. But a lot of disabled people, specifically blind/hard of seeing are losing access to accessibility in apps like Apollo, as the official app has shit accessibility options.
Reddit CEO shit the bed hard. Then hosted an AMA where he proceeded to double down. Now everyoneās pondering if the bed can be saved or if we need to trash it and get a new one.
I want to quit my job and start a totally different career but I don't know what else I would do. I don't really have hobbies that I can monetise. Booo.
I should stop working. It's been hours and nobody has asked me to do anything so I've just started to decipher code that's written by a colleague. What is wrong with me.
I reckon eventually... I mean, if we do in fact create AI, like true AI, it would have its own language, right? Unless you scale it all the way down to binary...
Oh, but what about morse code? Is that a language?
Thanks! I figured that, if anyone is like me and underestimated how much they rely on the Reddit avatar icon to know who's who, then making it the same on this platform may be helpful!
I just ordered stuff from Coles to be delivered because I'm not feeling so great, and I reckon even with the elevated prices/fee I'm still going to save money because I'm not wandering the supermarket picking up things I didn't go in to get/things I don't need/things I absolutely should not be buying.
Hard to walk out of a supermarket these days without spending near $100 with my wheelie nanna bag but I got away with this for $40 delivered.
Update: the packer couldn't find 3 of my items, 2 of which were the most important components of what I wanted for dinner. Welp.
Dammit, so the Melbourne sub going private thing smashed my last 6 months of journaling on the DT. Had I known I could have copied it.
Anyone an old melbourne mod here?
Any ideas where it might be webarchived?
I messaged the old mods today to try and see if they'll grant me access for a little while to copy it. I should have doing it all along, but I obvioulsy didn't foresee this and I had no warning all our old comments would disappear. eck.
EDIT in other news I went to the st kilda town hall for the pop up drag storytime run by rainbow community angels in the wake of another drag storytime event being cancelled due to the disgustiing behaviour of a few. It was cold and wet but our hearts were warmed. happy pride. again.
I wonder how many people only order this for the freebie, then cancel.
I did this a couple years ago, using a temp debit card that couldn't be charged again, they then emailed me saying your payment didn't go through but we've got you anyway, pay us back when you are ready.
A second box arrived on my door and I swear all the meat was off despite being cold and not left for long. They then emailed me a few times pretending to be their own debt collector, I emailed them with a pdf letter requesting they cease and desisted all attempts of getting money for the box I didn't pay for and they never contacted me again.
Morning all! I've been up too late tinkering with this new experience and my eyes feel like they're hanging out on stalks, so I'd better lay off the revenge bedtime procrastination and hit the hay. G'night all!
why the fuck did my body decide that i needed enough sleep before fucking 5 o'clock in the fucking morning? i mean, i get a couple extra hours to do housework, but i REALLY don't wanna be awake at this time of day. i'd much rather be giving my pillow some head and my blacket some tail
Think I'm finally getting the hang of keeping the fire going so I don't have to sit over it and feed it. Mind you I have had to dash over and madly stoke it with paper a couple of times.
My method is to use some fire starters (Samba natural are the best IMO), loads of kindling and a few pieces of firewood on top. Start it and leave it. Once the flames go down and the firewood catches it needs little attention. Once the firewood breaks down to embers, put another log in choke out the fire a bit (assuming it's a closed fireplace).
I find paper doesn't do much and can smother the flames if you put too much in.
No, one of those little open ones you got in the '40s houses.
Edit: I've found most of the tips and whatnot I've read or seen on YouTube don't work with this one so it's a matter of trial and error. And I have alot of paperwork to get rid of anyway...
Is a curved monitor going to be as revolutionary as everyone keeps telling me it will be? I was gonna pay the extra $30 and get the 27", but I'd have had to catch a train to Wangaratta and hen cart it back, not ideal
I like my curved monitor. I wouldn't describe it as revolutionary because it is curved, but it does keep all the bits of a large screen at a better viewing distance. Having enough screen space to work on multiple documents at once is definitely a great thing though and well worthwhile.
Iām sure this is purely anecdotal, but has anyone else observed higher rates of cars backing into parking spots? I feel like it didnāt used to be a thing, and now I see it like twice a day.
I have officially liked enough songs on Spotify for my liked songs list to be filterable to "classy" music
Does that mean I can have a "dinner party", and bring out the "fine china", and lay down the "table cloth" and say "ah-pree-see-ate" and go to "ballrooms"?
Wait - how do you find this? I want to know if I have a classy filter too. God knows I fucking need it haha. I have ~400 liked songs, is that enough do you know?
I've got around 1300 songs in mine, but I've had it for a while. The thingy at the top scrolls and reveals more genres, then I just click the genre I want and it filters my liked songs playlist to just that genre
Trying to do the weekly shop for Coles online and it is just shitting the bed. It's both super slow and keeps locking us out or telling us item can't be added or just not showing us the list. I am going to scream. Anyone else having issues?
Edit: Yeah... still having issues, I'm over it. I wanted to add more shit but I'm tired, I want to go to bed.
I've seen some recent posts here about deleting Reddit accounts. If you do decide to, please consider archiving your user page and any posts you particularly enjoyed onto the Wayback Machine. I've deleted many accounts in my time, and trust me, you'll likely feel nostalgic one day and want to go reminiscing. Or, you'll want to link to that one really well-thought-out argument you made one time in a future conversation. A lot easier to do when there's an easily accessible archive you can just access whenever you want.
Why do no delivery companies seem to respect "signature required" and "no authority to leave"? What's the point of asking if they're just going to leave my shit in front of the door anyway?
Okay here's hoping this works - federation from kbin wasn't great yesterday but I can see the new DT today so I should be able to keep up with the regulars again now.
Walked past the Australian Red Cross opshop in Bridge road during lunchtime - They're doing a sale of jeans for "from $5". Which is a huge discount on their regular prices. Their stock is good but comparatively exxy imo.
Does the web app occasionally just judder for anyone else? Like the text randomly vibrates up and down slightly. Itās only happened a few times. But very disconcerting like Iām having a stroke or something. Iām on iOS using safari.
Nah, but it doesn't work on my work laptop so I'll have to use my phone (which has poo reception in the office) when I'm not working from home. Not looking forward to that.
Yes Iām using the same option as you iOS safari and if Iām scrolling down sometimes it does that and last for several seconds before it stops on it own. I donāt like it, makes my eyes hurt. Itās happened I think 3 times now since yesterday when I joined
A mate of mine set up a specialist gym to train commonwealth athletes - the gym is designed to be used by a maximum of 10 people at once since it's so specialised and basically it's his wife and a trainer who do the work, plus he comes in to do some training himself. All up at most there's maybe 14 people on site. The council required that he have 20 parking spaces before he was allowed the permit to run the join. Apparently councils aren't that great at math.
It gets better. Council planning officers base a lot of their decisions on what they like and what they don't.
There's covenants and stipulations that can be removed, but someone who's been there for 30 years made the decision back in the 90s or 80s and won't budge.
What an absolute wank. There's a fair bit of parking around (literally across from the building). Most of it paid, so more money for the council? I would imagine the strip of restaurants would welcome more hungry patrons too.
Fuck. me. Mrs car has had its error code cleared and surprise surprise itās driving fine again. This is the 3rd random incident in 6 months. And we only had it 6 months! I think itās time to piss it off. #
Mazda 6 diesel. Mrs wanted a wagon for tinyest. Heard the Mazda was good. Wasnāt till after we brought it that we learned their diesels are notoriously unreliable.
I'm really happy with my job starting at 10:30, it's really weird going from no job to suddenly full time work. So starting at 10:30 also helps my Delayed Circadian Rhythm sort of... get used to waking up so early. Not excited for when we start at 9, I just wish I could do half work from home half go in the office, but it's not so bad because it's in the same suburb as me.
Now I'm at the emails part of the new job, and let me tell you, this is stressful... But I'd rather this than getting rejection emails from job so I guess a wins a win?
It was the icon that was the M, which was changed to a tram previously. There was no banner before, so I put the map up. It gives us something visual to have there, but definitely does not need to be permanent.
I'd liken it to hanging a cheap print on the wall, it livens up the place for now, but we'll probably want to spend some time finding a really good bit of artwork later.
Any statisticians out there keen to comment on the correlation between time that lunch was eaten and how busy work is? Iām eating lunch at 4:30 and itās hectic today.
Well, you found time to eat lunch so it's obviously not off the scale hectic. To fully assess we would need to consider factors such as what time breakfast was consumed, whether anybody has supplied donuts for morning tea, and whether or not lunch is the same bloody soup you've been eating all week.
If I did Click and Collect at Chemist Warehouse and they didn't have stock at the place I pick up at, will they try and get stock to that location, ask if I want to pick up at another location, or just be jerks and refund?
