if this counts as spam sorry not sorry. I created a tumblr clone two years ago. And then I conected it to the fedi like a year ago. its been hard, its buggy and its fun. Did a big redesign during christmas
I have to say, I never used Tumblr, but I know that it was suggested as an alternative to either Twitter and/or reddit. How is it different and or similar from microblogging and the threadiverse?
I've seen it described as the social media site for people who hate social media.
The story goes that when Facebook was becoming mainstream, a guy came along and decided he hated Facebook. So he hired a software engineer at his company to help him make a site that wasn't Facebook in any way. Basically, the criteria for the site were that he could post photos on it and follow people whose photos he wanted to see, and he didn't have to see anything he didn't care about.
So Tumblr is a very self-curated social media experience where there's no brands or celebrities. You just search for stuff by hashtags, follow blogs that interest you, and post and reblog stuff at your whim. Everything is displayed on your dashboard chronologically, and the only stuff you'll find on there is stuff from people you follow.
The closest thing I'd describe it to is Twitter, but it's more blogging than microblogging and the more direct interaction between you and the people you follow can feel a lot more personal than other forms of social media. You can send people messages that can be answered in a public post in addition to the usual direct message system. There's no character limit on posts or anything, and people will write full short stories and stuff. It also has more of a sense of permanence, in my opinion. It isn't uncommon to see popular posts crop back up that were created in 2012-2014.
This is seriously one of my favorite things about the Fediverse... someone decided to make their own experience of it and build a platform... now it's a thing.
it started as a thing before being conected to the fedi. Its just that seemed like the best way of keeping the project alive and OH MY FUCKING GOD IT WAS HARD AND OH MY GOD I COMMITED SO MANY CRIMES AGAINST CODE
there are some people registering with.. fake emails lets say in the latest few hours. Sorry but need a real mail, even if its an anonimous one but i need one
they announced it more than a year ago, but tumblr now is on a skeleton crew. and no, I do not mean gay zombie pirates, I mean just a few of devs. AP is something hard, Ive done it my way but it would not scale to a tumblr scale.
Also, they have to add a lot of stuff to the interface
Just what I was looking for to (re)start a blog like my tumblr was before it became what is now... But, some points to get it better, in my opinion:
-The logo is... awful.
-The design is not the best... like someone said already, tumblr is used mostly by artsy people (like me), and having an appealing design is a must. Doesn't need to be a complicated or ellaborated design, just more pretty. The tumblr design in this case is really good, put the things in the center... maybe follow some of the rules of the tumblr or even Mastodon design, so people are familiar with it and get a felling to join.
-This I hope is to edit my microblog the way I was used to do in tumblr, use the themes and all. If you can do this, would be awesome!
Well, this from someone that's still waiting the approval to join, so those are my first impressions. I'm hopeful this becomes the "new tumblr" in the fediverse, because the fediverse artists need something like this (share personal and others 'art' or other general stuff, customise their blogs, well, everything tumblr used to be...
