Help Curating Game List for Gift

Hey everyone, I'm looking for critiques on my games list here. I've been casually enjoying retro gaming for the past year and my friend wants his kids to play some. He has two boys a few years apart but no older than 8 I think. I'm planning to surprise him with a POWkiddy RGB10X pre-configured with some games I think young kids would enjoy. This is where I need some help finalizing the list. I'm at a little over 30 games which I think is maybe too many but I want them to have a wide variety of genres and franchises to enjoy. What might you change or suggest?

  • Donkey Kong (NES or GBA)
  • Ridge Racer Type 4 (PS1)
  • Diddy Kong Racing (N64)
  • Super Mario 64 (N64)
  • Super Mario Bros. 3 (SNES)

PS.

  • He specifically mentioned Donkey Kong, though not any game specifically, as well as he personally enjoyed OddWorld as a kid so I threw that in there.
  • Maybe remove Contra and leave only Metal Slug?

Rare VHS Tape Uncovers Details from the Data East vs. Capcom Legal Battle

In a fascinating discovery, a rare VHS tape dating back to the early 1990s has been unearthed, providing new insights into the legal battle between Data East and Capcom, specifically regarding the game Fighter’s History.

The trial was resolved in 1994 with a ruling that favored Data East, determining that there were no copyright infringements due to the generic nature of the similarities between their work and Capcom's Street Fighter II. This case significantly shaped future interpretations of copyright law for video games, highlighting what can be legally protected versus merely generic game mechanics.

The VHS tape reportedly contains side-by-side comparisons of characters from both games, showcasing both similarities and differences in design, moves, and backstories.

> Good news / bad news. > Good is that I've captured the 16-minute segment comparing seven of Fighter's History's characters to those Capcom said Data East copied from SF2, Bad is that I thought the second part—the special moves comparison—was also on this tape, but it isn't. > > — Mollie L Patterson (@mollipen.bsky.social)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How do you believe this outcome changed the landscape of video game copyright law, and what implications might similar cases have today?

Endangered Retro Game Guides

Some of the best guides for retro games out there are super obscure, hosted independently, or only still exist on the internet archive. I know a couple, but maybe we could make a big list.

There's knowledge here that you only see replicated on Games Done Quick and other niche communities. Look at those VIEWS. I am going to download the series just so I know there's a copy out there.

Triple Impact Is A Promising New SNES Beat 'Em Up | Time Extension

Triple Impact: A Promising New SNES Beat 'Em Up

A trio of indie developers, @gangeek_style, @MisterDigifox, and @landsat77, are working on an exciting new side-scrolling fighter for the SNES called Triple Impact. The game clearly takes inspiration from classic SNES fighters like Final Fight and Rushing Beat.

The game is still in early development, but the footage from May shows solid progress with a promising move set.

While inspired by retro aesthetics, Triple Impact represents a fresh take on SNES beat 'em up games in an indie context. Homebrew and new releases for classic systems are always exciting to see as they breathe new life into beloved hardware.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How do you think Triple Impact will evolve from its current state? Will it meet the expectations of retro gamers who can't wait for new content on SNES classics?

Mega Castlevania IV Project Thrives with New Footage

The fan-made project 'Mega Castlevania IV' is actively in development, aiming to bring the classic SNES title 'Super Castlevania IV' to the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. This ambitious undertaking is being led by developers @GameDevBoss and @Retro_Reloaded101.

Project Highlights

  • Development Status: The project has made significant progress, as evidenced by new footage released by MD Rom Test. This footage showcases the game running on the Genesis/Mega Drive.
  • Visuals and Sound: Visuals have been effectively translated to the Genesis, but music has undergone changes due to hardware limitations. Despite this, the soundtrack remains a testament to the original compositions by Masanori Adachi and Taro Kudo.
  • Historical Context: This isn’t the first attempt to bring Super Castlevania IV to the Genesis, with Factor 5 creating a proof of concept for a Genesis port in the past, impressing Konami but ultimately not moving forward. The current project builds on this legacy, driven by passionate fans eager to see this classic game on a different platform.

Did you own a Mega Drive/Genesis back in the day? Were you jealous of Super Castlevania IV on the SNES?

Great Bosses in RetroGaming

Please mention your own favorite examples. The most notable difference between bosses IRL vs in games is that in games you generally get to beat the absolute tar out of them. No particular order.

T. Rex, Jurassic Park, Nintendo Entertainment System

!

There are lots of T. Rex in games, but this one eats children.

Gilgamesh, Final Fantasy V, SNES & various ports

!

Personally love womping on a bootlicker, and G here is a best in show of the breed.

Super Drunk, Bubble Bobble, Arcade & NES

!

This guy is kind of making fun of the drunks at bars where this game debuted, which is kind of mean, but as a character he is terrible and I relish in his destruction.

Deerhaunter, Timesplitters Future Perfect, Playstation 2 & Game Cube & Xbox

!

Because he is also playable, "The Moose is Loose" became a common call on game nights in the mid 00s (especially in Ohio).

Decoy Octopus, Metal Gear Solid, Playstation & PC

!

Controversial because he cannot be beaten without a multi-tap and "foreknowledge" aka you have to actually read the manual where it suggests you might need to read some Cold War history, plug in a multitap and do CQC on him during a cutscene.

  • Rare VHS Tape Uncovers Details from the Data East vs. Capcom Legal Battle | Retro Gaming News 24/7
  • Compare to excavation of the Atari video game burial:

Remnants of E.T. and other Atari games were discovered in the early hours of the excavation, as reported by Microsoft's Larry Hryb.[48][49] A team of archaeologists was present to examine and document the Atari material unearthed by excavation machinery... Only about 1300 cartridges of the estimated 700,000 were removed from the burial, as the remaining materials were deeper than expected, which made them more difficult to access, according to Alamogordo mayor Susie Galea.[51] The cartridges found were from 59 different games, the majority of which were for the Atari 2600; six were Atari 5200 titles. Atari hardware was also excavated.[52] The burial was refilled following this event.

  • I rented many games solely based on their covers, only to be mildly disappointed when I got home.
  • When I give a digital game as present I go to the shop to print out the cover art on photo paper and then put it in a card. It gives them something they can immediately look at, handle, and discuss.

Here are a few I've used recently, they are more literal than the cartridge era but they are still artworks in their own right:

  • I rented many games solely based on their covers, only to be mildly disappointed when I got home.
  • Nintendo of America often used pixel art for their own box art early on in the NES era. It was similar to the in game graphics, but usually more detailed. See Metroid’s original artwork. If there was a requirement for third parties, perhaps it could be met by simply including screenshots on the back.

  • An old Xbox advertisement
  • Idk about that myself, but I think going off the picture, the way you open beers on it is the "side of a table" method, and in order to have enough room to do so with the table right there under the PS1, the bottles would have to be about half an inch long rather than about 10 inches (guesstimate of beer bottle length.)

And frankly I'm not sure it'd even work, the edges on the pictured ps1 may be too rounded themselves.

  • An old Xbox advertisement
  • If we're talking about weird video game ads, I want to give a shoutout to PS3's baby ad

  • An old Xbox advertisement
  • Bonus weird ad with the PS1 being used to open beer bottles:

  • If I lose the spread gun, I start over.
  • Spread is brokenly good, but I like playing with Laser too. It feels good to land the entire beam on a boss. Especially in the arcade version, laser kills bosses fast.

  • If I lose the spread gun, I start over.
  • Well, obviously, it was a typo. No one is 2,555 years old.
