Japan's changed in the last few years. Chain restaurants there's a separate air tight smoking room or you can't smoke indoors at all. Local places might allow it but I feel like I don't see it much even then. The only places left that have it seem to be bars or izakayas.

Is this a US expression? I never heard it growing up so I just assumed it was from the UK or something

I legit had no idea ginger ale was supposed to taste like ginger until I was in college and had ginger beer for the first time. Ginger ale is a normal unassuming soda-- ginger beer (the right version anyway) is better than pretty much any other soda.

I had this happen IRL, when my friend was helping do some super tasks in his small apt building to get a reduction in his condo fees. The boiler needed to be reset for some reason I can't remember, so he headed down and pushed the obvious buttons that seemed to be for turning it off and on. About 30 minutes later it seemed like the apartment was getting colder and he got some calls from other people in the building. This was in the middle of a pretty cold winter, so a boiler guy had to be called to come out. It was probably 8 or 9 PM, so I'm sure he was charging some exorbitant rates to be there, and once he arrived he went around the side and pushed a tiny unmarked metal slide in and out once, which fixed the problem.

If you zoom in on the can it says 6%. Japan went through a phase of increasing alcohol percentages on these types of drinks ~10 years ago when the govt was raising taxes on beer a few times in a relatively short time period. They first came out with the "strong" versions which were 9%, and I think that wave peaked at a 13% lemon drink (which tasted like licking a robot, btw).

More recently Japan's been a little more health conscious about booze in general, so there's been an increase in types of non-alcoholic versions of drinks, including pale ale type beers and cocktails. The companies making cheap options like the -196 and the zeros have subsequently put 6 and 7% versions in the stores. There've also been studies showing young people drinking less overall, so it'll be interesting to see what the next moves are.

It'd be like a company marketing the "mystical multiball" that shows people juggling 7 objects and implying you too could do that if you only owned their particular set.

I agree with you that a large part of the problem is that destruction is easier than creation, but it wouldn't be hard to get a lot of progressive things in if there were the political will for it. Appoint tons of progressive judges and start putting through huge increases in wealth taxes, climate and social programs, workers/union rights, scale back police power, etc etc.

But even if there were hundreds of leftist judges waiting in the wings, the dems are too corporatist to support stuff like that, so the best they can offer is some social programs that won't upset the status quo too much.
