The wire service has repeatedly signaled that it is preparing a legal challenge. As one AP staffer remarked on condition of anonymity, “It’s hard to come up with a clearer case of viewpoint discrimination.”
Good. I’m glad they’re not just going to silently accept this shit. The Associated Press is one of the most reliable and well respected news sources in the world. I’m hoping Trump’s hissyfit backfires tremendously.
Ah yes, a legal challenge against an administration that has proven they don’t care about the law and will do whatever they want with no consequences.
Short of direct action, nothing will come of this or any other lawsuit against them. Someone needs to remove the offenders from the field, period. Anything short of that is useless.
As much as direct action is fun, this is just a lie. Lawsuits have already changed the Trump administration's behaviour. Sure, they are still doing tons of illegal shit to see if they get called on it. But federal judges' rulings have called them on it and even served as effective push back in many cases.
As the Trump stooge correctly states (broken clock, etc.)
“While their right to irresponsible and dishonest reporting is protected by the First Amendment, it does not ensure their privilege of unfettered access to limited spaces, like the Oval Office and Air Force One,” Budowich wrote.
It's basically the argument Bush, Reagan, and so on used for "Free Speech Zones."
It says nothing about your right to do it anywhere so they can force you into a zone a mile away from the RNC for your legal first amendment peotected protest.
You know, this is the kind of talk that should have been happening since before 2016. Everyone has warned that the constant barrage of lies and misinformation is dangerous.
However, they have the keys to the kingdom for round two now. The inaction of us (as a country) has let it get to this point. We're in for a wild ride.
If they are going to punish a news organization for a perceived slight, then every other organization would be scared to report, make the press in fact not free
The executive unitary theory, which the party in charge of all three branches of government right now subscribe to, essentially implies that the first amendment, and really the entire sheet of parchment, is about as useful as toilet paper.
"Congress shall not" doesn't mean shit when it's the executive calling the shots and the only institutions that can legally stop him are controlled by his loyal party.
At this point I'm almost hoping for some team of elite western-European mercenaries to come in and take over the capital and reboot democracy with updated firmware.
C'mon world. America has spent the past hundred-some-odd years spreading our democracy like a horny teenager. Can't someone repay the favor?
Unfortunately this does not fall under that. They are still free to report things. They just don't get to report things second hand. He did the same shot during his first term.
Since they aren't privy to being in press briefings anymore they should just start reporting what they think happened. They can be the first to report Trump picked his nose after walking up to the podium or Leon was wearing a bright red skirt.
You're absolutely right. It's hard for me to switch out of using 'TERF' because it offended them, but no one is even pretending to be a feminist anymore. I need to find a new shorthand name for "bigoted towards trans people specifically".
