This really puts things into perspective...
  • Understandable. Here you go, this image shows a single person (to scale) off the coast of South Carolina: https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/21959a6e-4413-4627-8dcf-76f88b314f72.jpeg

  • Taste the rainbow
  • That's a pretty creative interpretation of what I said. Whether a person is queer or not should not affect their support for a Palestinian state. My comment was specifically regarding the championing of Palestine in the context of a pride parade without also explicitly calling out the plight of queer Palestinians, something I have not seen any of them do. Without that, it's akin to a workers' rights march promoting the UAE.

  • This really puts things into perspective...
  • Ackshually this only shows maps if 100% of the land area voted. Humans are much smaller than shown here.

  • Taste the rainbow
  • Thanks for the source on that. It's still questionable to choose it for this context specifically, but I crossed out my statement.

  • Taste the rainbow
  • Did you reply to the wrong person? Because this doesn't appear to have anything to do with what I said.

  • Taste the rainbow
  • If it has nothing to do with Israel why do so many Zionists bring it up gay Palestinians in their debates?

It's convenient for them to do so. It makes them hypocrites, but broken clock etc.

Do you believe Israel genuinely cares about gay Palestinians?

No, but again, what does that have to do with the way Palestinians treat their own?

Edit: Also Israel gave Hamas suitcases with cash to keep them in power. So you are wrong about Israel not being complicit. Palestinians have no self-governance because huge outside powers keep meddling in their affairs.

This is true, but I have yet to see any indication that self-rule would improve the lot of queer Palestinians. Their countrymen are overwhelmingly against them, and that is unacceptable. I don't care about religion or arbitrary lines drawn on a map — I care about human rights.

  • Taste the rainbow
  • The status of queer people in Palestine has nothing to do with Israel. There is absolutely nothing preventing Palestinians from stopping their persecution of their queer brothers and sisters. Deflections like yours are exactly part of the problem - you are throwing queer Palestinians under the bus just to fuel your crusade against Israel. What you are doing is actively harmful to LGBTQ+ rights.

  • Taste the rainbow
  • It's a legitimate complaint. In my part of Canada we have several pride parades led by pro-Palestinian groups, which is absurd not only because there are no Palestinians in it, but because nearly everybody in the parade would be persecuted in Palestine. A trans rights group I've been involved in for a while had a faction break away because we weren't pro-Palestine enough (whatever that means).

I support the creation of a Palestinian state, but queer support of that cause must come with support of queer people in Palestine, rather than pretending they don't exist.

Edit: also, nice nose on that comic. Time to check OP's post history...

  • In fiery speech to Congress, Netanyahu vows 'total victory' in Gaza and denounces U.S. protesters
  • Yes, that one I was aware of. The rest of the law is sensible enough — not much different than what we see in Quebec, for example — but that clause is unacceptable.

  • In fiery speech to Congress, Netanyahu vows 'total victory' in Gaza and denounces U.S. protesters
  • Thanks for this, I wasn't aware of that law. It definitely isn't acceptable to have laws based on the ethnicity of a particular subset of the population. Yet another reason why I hope to see Likud leadership at the Hague one day.

  • Do you have a source for that? I'm not aware of it and don't want to be unknowingly defending them if that's the case.

You're aware that over 20% of Israel's population is Arab, right?

  • Mark Kelly now heavy favorite to be Harris’ running mate as he blasts JD Vance on Ukraine
  • I’m thinking get the person who can run and win in 8 years.

I think at this point it's more important to pick the candidate that increases the chances of victory. Trump won't be in any shape to run (or likely even alive) in 2028 and hopefully MAGA will have died along with him.

  • OK, sure, but that's like saying it's pointless to use a secure password online because the NSA could hack you if they wanted to.

  • This is why people should stop recommending Arch. Fedora or Opensuse TW should be recommended instead for new people.
  • I'm not watching some rando groyper's clickbait. What is the reason?

  • Gonna have to disagree hard with this, based on extensive first-hand experience (web dev). I've added CAPTCHA to dozens (hundreds?) of web forms, and it all but eliminates spam.

I don't think I've seen anyone else here with an 8:9 monitor, so I'll break the ice! The color theme is Layan Light; everything else is stock KDE.

Why do you grow mushrooms? What for?

I stumbled upon this community for the first time a few minutes ago. I like gardening and houseplants, but never heard of people recretionally growing mushrooms of the non-magical kind. Is it for food?

In unsurprising news, Reddit prepares IPO

Reddit's cofounder Steve Huffman said in its early days he filled up most of the site with content using different accounts until it got more users.

Fifth Order of Angels (1974 radio broadcast)

This was recorded in Cleveland for a radio broadcast; the tape became available as a bootleg and is known as one of the most important ones in the band's history.

It's the first-ever recording of "Fly by Night" and only their third performance with Neil. We can hear snippets of what would later become "By-Tor and the Snow Dog" in the Working Man solo.

A quote from Geddy regarding bootlegs:

    >A lot of people say 'It takes away from record sales' but [...] the fact is that any fan who buys a bootleg is still going to buy your record. So, who is it harming?

USB webcam lagging only in Zoom?

Sorry if this community isn't the right place to ask — I got a USB webcam that works great in Teams, but lags tremendously (3-4 seconds) in Zoom. I doubt the Zoom app is introducing that lag on its own, but how would I troubleshoot this?

This is on EndeavourOS (basically Arch)

Just picked one up. This is the best price I've seen this year. Very strange monitor but awesome for work - it even serves as a USB-C docking station with 90W power delivery.

Why does Pandoc get updated nearly every day?

Please forgive the noobish question, but what's going on with a document converter that it gets such frequent updates (and by extension forces a ton of Haskell updates)?

Trying Fedora. Never rebooted so often in my life

Even back in the Windows 3.1 or 95 days I didn't have to reboot this often - sometimes twice a day. Seems a bit excessive?

File permissions on mounted drive - can read/write but can't drag into apps?

RESOLVED: it was caused by the app being flatpak. use Flatseal!

I have a network drive mounted to my computer (PopOS). I have read & write access to everything in the drive and can drag and drop files between two Nautilus windows, but if I try to drag a file from the network drive into an email for example, I get a popup about file permissions. Is it because flatpak apps don't inherit my user permissions?

Finally using Linux full-time thanks to PopOS

I've been using Linux on and off for about 15 years, but was never able to make the leap to using it full-time until PopOS. It's been painless to use and does everything I need with only minor tweaks. Thank you System76! I can't wait until the Cosmic DE is released.

(too bad about the name, though...)

Using Linux for work - need a good email/contacts/calendar system

(apologies in advance if this isn't the right community for this question)

I've been flirting with Linux on and off for about 15 years and I think I'm ready to make the switch mostly full-time. I use a laptop for work and have a Microsoft 365 plan with email and such. I need to replace that with something Linux-friendly and would much prefer something that works with a desktop email client. Easy syncing of email, contacts and calendar to Android is a must.

Proton seems like it might be a good option but the privacy features aren't a huge selling point for me so I'm open to other options!

    Wishbone Ash - Sometime World

I freaking love the "break" in this song around the 2 minute mark. Any song with melodic bass runs is a soft spot for me. The whole "Argus" album is incredibly good, one of my favourites to listen to front to back.
