Dog collars don't break away when tugged on, which is good because they're used to attach a leash. It's problematic for cats though because cats like to climb on things, and if their collar catches on something, it can choke them if they fall or try to jump down.
Cat collars are designed with this in mind. They have a buckle that will release if pulled on with enough force, so they won't choke your cat if they get stuck on something.
We had several cats that would constantly ambush each other, to solve this (and the cats running under my blind roommates feet) we put bells on each of them. Took less than 2 weeks for them to to be able to ambush each other again with out a single jingle from the bells
we bought a collar with a bell for our cat to stop her from killing birds in our neighborhood. Fucker taught herself how to walk so the bell wouldn't ring and alert the birds.
She's getting old now so there's no energy for messing with birds so that issue fixed itself, but still...
