Hey, pals. I'm doing my free handmade toys again for 2024; here's the link if you'd like to check out the post on Reddit (boo hiss) and here's the link if you know the gist and would like to make a nomination ❤️
I wanted to put one in for my next door neighbour as they’re going through a rough period at the moment but I wasn’t sure what size or creation to go with.
Thank you to all the people who gave me words of wisdom yesterday. I love this little community. And it's nice to have people on my side. 🫶
I've got some self-care to do. Unread books, movies to watch, doggo to pat, new gym to try. Yesterday my dad made me stand in the green waste bin to squash down the leaves and branches. It's the little things.
These bad feelings will pass. I will feel moments of joy again. I will focus on me and ultimately live the life I want to live. I will be okay.
P.S. I'm plugging this now, if you're into seeing your music listening stats - last.fm! Also good to keep up with what friends are listening to (and see who listens the most)!
What a beautiful looking day! In another instalment of "You Know You're Getting Older When.." You look at a morning like this and think "great, better get some washing out" instead of "great, where can we go/who can we get pissed with" 😆
Tell me dude, Tea Party was huge here late 90s. They played a bunch of uni's instead of concert halls when they toured. I saw them at Monash Clayton and Monash Caulfield for about $20 a ticket.
The bar we used to hang out at was near a local recording studio.
Tea party were recording and would go to the bar for drinks.
I recognised the singer and introduced myself and my mates. He was super nice and thrilled that we knew who he was. My mates were musicians and he would talk shop with them.
The other guitarist/bassist was chill and would talk hockey and movies. The drummer wanted nothing to do with us and just sat on the side drinkinig.
At one point I went to the toilets and heard a loud snort. Two band members exited a stall, saw me, laughed and offered me a line.
I accepted, as one should.
Went back and kept chatting.
We probably ran into them 3-4 times in a span of a month and they remembered us each time.
Few months later they were shooting a video at my uni and had no idea who we were, but we're still nice.
Colombian marching powder :) I don't want to hijack your story, but let's just say that a long time ago, back in the UK, someone said that exact phrase to me and it started a chain of events that ultimately lead to me sitting here now, in Melbourne, typing this reply.
A terrible tragedy in the Raven household, the water fountain has died. The pets will be forced to drink still water until a replacement pump arrives. The indignity of it.
Lol you just reminded me of the time a housemate of mine (many moons ago) got one of those bamboo zen Feng Shui tabletop water fountain things for Xmas. The water was constantly needing to be topped up for some reason, and eventually the motor burnt out. The cat looked decidedly miffed at this turn of events.
Do you have a bath that the cats jump into? Maybe you could set up a bowl with the water just trickling a tiny bit into it?
I think she'll be ok drinking from the bowl still, but the flowing water is definitely better.
Pumps often do tend to have a limited lifespan. This does vindicate my decision to pay for their 10 year extended warranty when I bought the fountain (something I normally don't do as they are generally a bad deal). The standard warranty is 2 years, I've had it just under 3.
It's so hot even the cats are floomping around, instead of lying around blissfully, as is their wont.
Meanwhile I just cracked the bottle of cold prosecco. Yum.
According to my daughter you don't really need cutlery. Steak just pick it up and use your hands. Salad the same. Soup just slurp out of the bowl. I think this is the Arab in her that utilises hands and bread. I will still provide cutlery at my table thank you very much.
Look, hear her out... washing your hands after a meal is a lot easier than washing cutlery. Plus if you eat off and grab food with bread/pita/lavash there is no cleanup there.
Remember folks it's more efficient to start your air conditioning early in the day and keep it running to manage the temperature, rather than cranking it up when it's already hot to cool down.
We used our powerpal reader as a meter when the sun was blazing and cranked the aircon as far as possible while reading zero grid use. Now maintaining comfy as shit with very little oomphing.
Cheese, pickles, chutney and crackers for lunch. The crackers are sweet potato, and I'm not overly thrilled with them. A bit strong flavoured, although that works quite well with the chutney which is also strong.
Be me trying to reserve an Uber for when my cruise gets back in: "7am from White Bay Cruise Terminal"
Uber: You got it! 6am booking confirmed. Driver will wait until 6:12am.
3 times just to make sure it wasn't something I was doing. Every time. $48 for 15 minutes estimated drive too.
Might try and sneak my way onto the shuttle bus which goes to central then just make my way from there to the car hire place.
Meanwhile! I still have a train ticket booked which I'm just not going to use. Ship gets into Sydney at 4:30am, so when I booked it I figured I'd have HOURS to kill before the 7:40am train. Turns out disembarkation will start at around 6:45am so if something caused any delay I'd miss that train anyway. If I wasn't carrying my own bag out my disembarkation group time is 8:35am so that would have been doublefucked.
The upside to all of this is that last night I extended my car hire by a day and booked myself a room in Albury for the night so I don't need to do the entire drive in a day. So now it's not a big deal if I don't get going from Sydney as early as humanly possible.
Sounds very sensible to break the journey on the way back esp after being unwell. 2022 xmas I had to leave at 4am to get to Sydney in time for dinner and was barely sane by the end coming after many stressful days prior. Broke my journey on the way back at Albury as well and had a much better time. Detoured via Beechworth on the way back on the second day and had a blast
Apparently our neighbour across the road thought 2:28AM is a nice time to set fireworks off in the backyard. I shouldn't find it as funny as I do, it's not really, but most of our suburb is old people, old people who aren't very happy about being woken up to fireworks at 2am, even on a saturday morning
I am hating the dog days of this Xmas period. Both very understimulated (normal life is pretty limited as is) but also stressed out by being surrounded by ferals. My art is really coming along but my physical and mental condition are really dipping.
I've been watching high level math videos
To fall asleep to,
I don't know who that Riemann was
But his hypothesis is cool.
About prime numbers and zeta functions,
They woosh above my head,
Correlating with a graph describing something else,
A millennium problem so I've read.
Help. Talking to someone on Hinge and we connected over tennis. I asked her if she's going to the AO this year. She says "I'd love to go but haven't booked anything yet" and then asks me if I'm going.
I should invite her right?? I'm just over thinking this aren't I. How do I ask her? Do I suggest it as a potential date? I did initially say we could play tennis for our first date half jokingly..
I just finished listening to an audio book of the anthropology of Neanderthals and I feel quite emotional! Truly they were our brothers and sisters and I am so sad they are gone.
I think in attitude they probably were, but there were far less cars on the road so you didn't have problems as often. In my opinion the major problem on the roads are due to overcrowding, which leads to multiple occasions on every drive where what you want to do and what someone else wants to do come in to conflict. A certain number of people will act like assholes to get their way and another portion will act badly occasionally depending on circumstances, but if we had less crowded roads most of these conflicts would never happen in the first place.
Got thoroughly toasted outside and am rather dehydrated and tired now, but managed to get some decent gardening done 💪 Rejuvenated some rather dry potting mix, planted out the basil seedlings, repotted a rootbound kniphofia and a last-chance dwarf lemon (why do I have NO luck with dwarf lemons 😭), sowed a bunch of seeds... tomorrow I'll repot the curry leaf plants, set up the new large rectangular planter box with fresh soil (my back is already aching at the thought), and try to settle on a new arrangement of all the plants with the limited space I have. The manzano chilli plant is big enough that it's hard to find a semi-shade location for it over summer, so may need to get creative and/or prune judiciously.
I also really need to find out how to keep the snails off my balcony pots for real. They're the bastards making it hard to grow anything from seed... especially beloved sunflowers. Any tips gratefully received. I've read that the typical barrier tape sold in garden shops isn't very effective so have ordered some EMI copper tape off ebay.
e: gonna start reading the Silo e-books now since I can't stop wondering what happened after the end of season 1. and I hear it's much better than the show anyway
The problem with bunnings gastropod tape is it's copper coloured and does fuck all. The layer is too thin to provoke the galvanic reaction. You want to find a decent garden shop, preferably one with a website that's from the 90's to get the good stuff.
For now I've ordered 50mm wide copper tape used by musicians for electromagnetic interference, hopefully that does the trick for a reasonably cheap price and fast delivery...
