Help me pick one of the habit trackers available through F-Droid?

I am having some trouble in picking one of the habit trackers available on F-Droid/Izzy-on-droid. Which one would you recommend or maybe you know another good free/libre one (from other repos or sources in general)?

The ones in my scope thus far are:

TimePlanner has also caught my eye but it seems to be quite a bit more than a simple habit tracker

Builds of Jerboa 0.0.70 and 0.0.71 seem to be failing

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.sdf.org/post/19863081

Had doubts whether I should inform of the issue in Jerboa's github and sharing this here because of that. > > F-droid seems to have done a recent cleanup of apps, focusing on non-foss stuff. Not sure if that has an effect, but sharing the info. > https://f-droid.org/en/2024/07/18/twif.html > > ^Maybe related: > Builds of com.dessalines.thumbkey:96 and com.dessalines.rankmyfavs:11 seem to have failed too. > https://monitor.f-droid.org/builds/build (The page lists failed builds at the end)

Anyone know where the issue is to be notified to? Or where I can learn more about the issue? I did try to read the log file and this message seems noteworthy: > No hash for gradle version 8.9! Exiting.

Are there any good FOSS TTS engines?

espeak's apk doesn't seem to have been updated in 2 years and says it isn't compatible with my phone (Pixel 8a). I'm not sure if there are any decent ones. I want TTS for OSMAnd's navigation while driving. They do prerecorded voices too but those can only say prerecorded things obviously, so eg can't say specific road names.

Any apps on android to write to an NTFS drive?

Android can open it as read-only but is there an app on F-Droid that allows me to write to an NTFS drive connectrd over USB-C too?

Aard 2 - Offline dictionary app

I started using it last year and I think others would benefit from knowing about it too.

Offline dictionaries(based on data from wikipedia, wiktionary etc.): https://github.com/itkach/slob/wiki/Dictionaries

I use the Wordnet and SimpleWikipedia dictionaries along with the one for the Wiktionary in my native language. ______ Going on a tangent about the dictionaries(you can skip this if you're currently not interested on that):

They had a Malayalam dictionary, which was quite awesome for me, as I'm a Malayali. The dictionary is based on ml.wiktionary.org from 2021. Maybe there were not too many additions for the effort to make a new one.

The code for creating the dictionaries are also available in their github. I tried it out, but I'm on Opensuse Leap currently and installing couchdb seems tricky.

I also saw a python package, Pyglossary, which helps to convert dictionaries between opensource formats.

Wikipedia provides monthly dumps of zim files(used in Kiwix, another dictionary app. Not available in F-droid). https://dumps.wikimedia.org/other/kiwix/zim/ I was able to use Pyglossary to convert those into slob files and use them. So might be an easier way to get slob files, if slob files of Wiktionary or Wikipedia in your language are not available. Or if you want to update them. Data scraping is also avoided.

the new neostore UI is really great

It feels completely different, yet very similar. I like it. Feels like the most modern app on my phone now.

Edit: I don't like the floating action button search but that's just my opinion. Maybe I just have to get used to it.

Aurora Store do not allow saving apks to internal storage, v4.4.3

If you use mobile data only on your phones, and you update your apps by transferring apks through local connection (offline), bad news.

Saving to external storage is gone, and every single phone will need to download updates through Aurora separately, either by using up mobile data or connecting to WiFi.

On version 4.4.3 this feature is already gone.

Dev: > ... both settings were dropped. I am open to patches if someone can implement it again using the documents API which is recommended by Android.

--- If you know any app that can extract split apks, so that it can transferred and installed afterwards on another phone, please let me know. Thanks

Soothing Noise Player : Natural calming sounds to relax

Play soothing sound effects to help you relax and drown out background noise.

Soothing Noise Player | F-Droid - Free and Open Source Android App Repository

New in F-Droid. Happy to see this. In the past I used Noice but then Noice wanted Internet access and I stopped using it. It comes with Anti-Features warning. Soothing on the other hand requires very little permissions.

Legado

For people that read their books digitally, they probably all know of Moon+ Reader the de facto industry standard. However I had a couple issues with Moon Reader, none were show stoppers, but just things that I felt could and should be improved. This led me to looking for alternatives, A LOT! Eventually I stumbled across Legado. It had a user experience that felt sane and modern and it didn't feel like it was bloated by legacy code or design. I've been using it for over a year and though it's not perfect, it's better than M+R for me.

That said, the English translation is sub-par and that's being kind. Subsequently, when I asked the developer to host the translation somewhere it would be easier to translate than on Github, the developer, whom is Chinese and given that their userbase is mostly Chinese and said it wasn't worth the extra work and that is certainly their prerogative.

But… I would honestly like to see this epub reader get the love it deserves from the West. So if anyone would like to contribute to the English translation please make a pull request.

App to keep track of days since last alcoholic drink?

I have recently stopped drinking alcohol and I am looking for an app to keep track of my progress. Does anyone have any suggestions?

If possible, a widget with days since last drink would be nice!

Edit: Thank you so much for all the suggestions! I found Sobriety to work best for my particular use case.

New #Acer #ChromeBook. Can't seem to install @fdroid to get personalDNSFilter installed.

Is there a chrome-book equivlent for easily managing a DNS block list, on device?

Yes, I can run something on my home netwok, but what I'm looking for is an easy, on-device solution, like installing a "local vpn" like #personalDNSFilter does on my phone, into which I can put my own block list, and easily add and remove entries.

Browser extensions not enough, want to intercept all IP.

fdroid does not appear to support tor ipv6

If you turn on the use tor setting and 127.0.0.1:9050 is open fdroid works fine, but if only [::1]:9050 is open fdroid fails.

Any good foss image/video/audio editor apps?
  • Image editor

    • Fossify Gallery
    • Snapseed (not FOSS, works without Google stuff with disabled Internet)
    • Krita (UI only for tablets, complex, not very good for editing)

    Image compression

    • Signal/Signal-FOSS/Molly (just send to some person but save before sending and exit, saves as JPEG with removed EXIF and very compressed)
    • ImagePipe
    • ffshare (pretty weak compression)
    • image toolbox (and other conversion)

    Video cutting

    • again, Signal (left-right cutting, compression, metadata)
    • ffshare (compression)
    • open video editor (strange UI, no more features than Signal)

    Video editing

    • open video editor:

  • F-Droid exploring to include paid apps, in-apps, subscription, and ads in app
  • @Neon @10_0 I personally paid for FairEmail pro features, a little more that what they asked because their app is useful to my daily life. I felt however uneasy doing so because you just PayPal to a random email address, it would be better to have an official payment service for Foss apps though.

  • Do you use apps like NetGuard or TrackerControl? How are they like?
  • Turn the main switch on in the app, then launch every app, check back in TC to see how many trackers each app contains.

  • Local only finance tracker with backup/restore feature?
  • Using MyExpenses which is perfect to let you track your bank accounts.

It's the only app I found which let you reconcile operations with bank statement.

  • Help me pick one of the habit trackers available through F-Droid?
  • Habit Builder looks good

    • Monochrome Icon
    • Dynamic Color support ( no pure dark theme unfortunately )
    • Send Crash reports is enabled by default ( Bad )
    • does what it says
    • small size 3mb
  • Big cleanup and smaller repo | F-Droid - Free and Open Source Android App Repository
  • @boredsquirrel Fennec/Mull are huge tasks to clean up, delays are expected but are measured in weeks. K-9 pre-releases are coming as they appear, but you need to enable Beta updates in app details menu. Fossify apps were included when ready.

  • Big cleanup and smaller repo | F-Droid - Free and Open Source Android App Repository
  • @boredsquirrel @merde Wait, which app took 6 months to get updates built verified from source by F-Droid?

  • Looking for FOSS SMS app recommendations. (Android 14)
  • That compared to Quik?

Quik is huge, 60MB for an SMS app... in my eyes it tries to do too much, like integration of random other protocols.

I used DekuSMS because of that but it doesnt allow texting phone numbers and Exodus shows it has a tracker

  • How do you switch clients?
  • i tried droid-ify after reading recommendations on Lemmy and i'm still on it after about a year.

it comes with repos already listed and you activate them with just a touch/click

export/import preferences and favorites list helps a lot with resets

  • How do you switch clients?
  • I recommend F-Droid Basic, it is more modern.

You just copy the repo URLs and install the other client and add the repos there.

Android apps are handled by the android package manager. That uses the signatures that were used to sign APKs. The stores just download them.

The source of the APKs is important though. F-Droid builds them on its own, this results in a more consistent build that may be more secure. But you need to trust F-Droid AND the developer.

Also, F-Droid is often multiple versions behind, where the developers might release newer versions.

F-droid uses a single key to sign all APKs, normally every dev has their own key.

If you use Obtainium, you normally get the APKs directly from releases of the devs. The same goes if you have external repositories, btw I updated this list recently and there are a lot of EOL repos.

Once an APK is installed, you can only update it, if the key matches. This means if you want to switch for example from Mull (F-Droid) to Mull (DivestOS repo) you need to reinstall the app.

But if you still use the apps from the same sources, you dont need to do that, and the client doesnt matter.

  • Does anyone know any offline audio/media player app with the 'Skip silence' option?
  • newpipe can play offline files I’m pretty sure

Don't think that this is true (unless we are talking about a fork that I am not familiar with). The FAQ has an entry on this and mentions that you need to use an external player. I use mpv and VLC.

  • Does anyone know any offline audio/media player app with the 'Skip silence' option?
  • Thank you.
Found one on the net to be added into mpv.conf:
    lavfi-complex='[aid1] silenceremove=1:0:-45dB:0:any:-1:0:-45dB:0:any:rms:0.002 [ao]'

    Edit:
The above command causes the visuals to be out-of sync in videos.
Searched for an alternative and got to know that the api29 version apk of mpv-android allows the use of scripts.
The skip-silence script is quite good.

Along a tangent, the skipchapters script is also quite useful, that I've started to use mpv more than vlc due to these scripts.
