I have a lot of tedious, unfulfilling work I REALLY don't want to do today but need to clear by COB before I go on leave. I've had a slow start to the day and a battle of Feels. Thankfully, the sun is shining so that makes it easier to stay on the good side for now
Today's strategy:
keep reminding myself of the reward after getting through today
remind myself efficiency is a good thing too
enjoy all the good food - today's medicinal carb is a Woodfrog bakery croissant. Dumplings for lunch
go out and weed my planter boxes at lunchtime for some serotonin 'n shit
blast all the feel-good 70s/80s pop rock. Currently on Toto, next up is classic Chicago
celebrate the end of the day by calling/messaging people I love
I got this!...
e: busting out the ELO now. Thanks to this Russian dude who uploaded 2x 2h complications!
This upcoming break couldn't come sooner, although it's unfortunate timing for work as it's a busy period with all the storms and shit. Thankfully they have never made me feel bad about leave as I generally tend to deliver otherwise.
Ha almost sounds like my day, I'm on leave at COB and on a plane first thing in the morning, but have a STACK to get finished here at work.
Downsides for me are being onsite in a windowless dungeon (yay for IT getting the least habitable spot on the site...!) and not having the awesome music!
Plus-side, I have some kickass leftovers from last night for lunch - I've been looking forward to today's lunch since I finished dinner last night!
I am infinitely grateful to be wfh on a gorgeous day like this, ngl. Blasting the music and regularly getting up from my chair when I'm bored/frustrated has been helpful. How are you going with the work? I'm making progress, bit spotty but I'm 30% of the way through the shitty reports. If I can get all the worst done by 2pm leaving just banal easy work for the rest of the day, I'll be winning.
Also what leftovers are these?! I love a good lunch that you can look forward to.
In one way, I get the idea to help people picturing themselves enjoying the space, but on the other hand, oh my god, what the heeeeeck. That bath picture, lounging on the bed in her bra, wtf.
Wtf?? Hahahaha that is gross. Did she get the photographer to do both the house and her Instagram pics then uploaded them all? That bathroom pic, seriously unnecessary
This isn’t the first Tassie real estate ad I’ve seen with a random surprise female agent lurking about.
Maybe it’s starting to trend over there ? I actually don’t mind adding a human element to an otherwise sterile advert. Seems like most ads have a human element for relatability.
We did show a different example of this type of ad(also located in Tas) to a mate who owns an agency in WA. He thought it was ridiculous haha.
I saw a video yesterday of a house and the real estate agent was in it. She wasn't saying anything just all this dramatic music as she flows through the house and looking longingly from the balcony and it reminded me of the ad I posted when I saw it years ago.
Just watched as the local daddy magpie gave a swark at someone who overreacted, swung around and started jogging...so Maggie gave them a bit of a swoop. Guy jogged off shaken and then I went up to the magpie and got a swark too. Said my normal "hello Maggie". We had a few quiet words and swarks back and forth and I wandered home.
Not gonna lie, I feel a little bit special as a chosen maggie friend.
Oh poo. Thought I had the afternoon off tomorrow but the client is back sooner than we all thought.
I just hope they haven't discharged her too soon...
Whew... Finished up at 7pm, well past when I'd hoped to finish at 5pm, and there's a couple of small outstanding but non urgent items. But I got through the worst of it - all the yucky stuff that made me renew my deep dislike for humanity and was very much due. Dobby is free!!!
...From one job, at least - next two days are gonna be real candle burners as well with the huge backlog from work trip last week and my not being available the next two weeks. I love that place though, so I'm kind of looking forward to getting stuck into it to help the team out.
48 hours to go before I'm on the way to the airport, yippee. For now, is dumplings time (swapped from lunch), and this week's episodes of OMITB and Slow Horses :)
You know in 10-20 years time we're gonna regret not asking Martin Sheen to take a crack at being the president IRL. Its worked out ok for Ukraine so far...
I literally stayed up until 4am, watching a YT video on a wild af Doom Map (MyHouse.wad - Inside Dooms Most Terrifying Mod) essentially someone took House of Leaves and made a Doom Map inspired by it. Complete with a google drive of journal entries lol.
Nice looking day today, I really need to try and get outside for a bit. I should probably pull some weeds while I'm out there too. Or clean the back paving, it's gotten quite gunky and slippery.
I received my first ever order from Ali Express yesterday. Their website is quite dreadful to deal with, but I managed to get some thread I've been struggling to get from any Australian suppliers. Some sewing needles I bought were not all the right type, and I got a refund without having to return - which is nice, because 4 out of 5 were right, and the others I can use eventually, just not what I wanted.
It is frustrating how expensive sewing notions are in Australia, it is generally much cheaper to buy ready made items than the materials to make it yourself.
I'm sad that I watched the trailer. The US version is one of my favourite shows... why are they just rehashing the same main character traits? The boss is trying to be like Michael, there's a Dwight character in there, what the hell.
Really considering telling the boss I need the rest of the week off, jumping in my car and driving somewhere untill Sunday. I have done zero to prepare for this but I could make it happen. Feeling pretty low this week.
Looking at NSW coast but a little further north where the sun is apparently shining, probably aim for the Shoalhaven area. Boss has approved. Just packing my suitcase now.
I'm feeling the same, really low low rider this week. Driving to work this morning and the city looked so pretty in the distance that I damn near just kept driving.
Got a pigeon nest in the tree outside my guest window. Loving her dedication sitting there in the wind and as the dogs run past.
Must've been a shortage of good options this year cause its barely 1 meter off the ground in a tree that sways pretty dramatically in the wind.
really ruins the tone for the day doesnt it. I recommend finding 5 minutes to sit in the sun with a coffee. No phone, no music, just the wind blowing through the trees.
I think I have my menu plan sorted for the next few days, which should clear out everything perishable from the fridge before I am away for a few days next week. I've also fully cleared out the vegetable drawer, which was nowhere near as bad as I feared - I did find some very gooey celery and some tomatoes that were more liquid than solid. I'm going to freeze a few things I have excess of (cauliflower & leek bake, some mushrooms and some stewed apple & pear) and have put some excess bananas in the freezer for future cooking. Plus I'll be freezing the planned camembert and cherry muffins. This whole "cook everything from scratch and focus on reducing food waste" hobby is very labour intensive some days!
Cooking from basic ingredients is definitely labour intensive.
These past two years have been my worst ever for cooking. Too hard to cook with sciatica. So it's easy food and even easier when my husband was cooking. Too many pre made bake in the oven foods like chips, which are not good. ( for example, chips instead of healthy baked potatoes, bought parathas instead of home made naan. Just getting in the habit of eating comfort food when in pain )
I think if I ever get sciatica so bad again I'm having shakes for meals
I've definitely been cooking a lot less from scratch over the past 6 weeks or so because of the labour involved. I am most definitely grateful for frozen veggies, sauces/pastes and the like! There is something very very satisfying about it when you do get around to it though.
I try to harness my more enthusiastic moments to make extra to freeze or preserve for the future so I can pull out easy meals when I don't have the energy. Things like extra cheese sauce are especially good, because it doesn't take much more effort to make a big batch than a small one.
Finally dragged myself to the closest op shop to get some clothes… I spent more than planned and am second guessing almost everything I got, but had to sort something out.
Other than a few basics I haven’t really bought clothes for years and a lot has changed.
Good basics are so hard to come by these days. Most op shop stuff is just kmart stuff at near kmart prices. Or H&M gear with 1 or 2 washes left in it. Trying to find a decent quality t without breaking the bank is insanely tough. Had a pair of new Levi jeans develop a hole within 2 wears the other week!
Can I have one of those, two of those, one of those and 5 cents worth of aniseed balls. (The local milkbar proprietor hated all kids under 10 with a passion that can only be generated by a mixed lolly bar).
They had the pre-made 20c bags but nope, we always had to stand there at the counter peering and pointing through the glass and choosing our lollies.
To their credit, not once were the older couple that ran the milk bar ever short or grumpy with the kids in our neighbourhood, I think they secretly loved it =)
Melonball on a warm-ish day going down a treat. I purchased this melonball as it was on sale and regular sliced watermelon was not. It's sweeter, tastier, and you get more fruit from it because the skin is pretty thin.
Person on public transport was playing music on phone at full blast. Then looked up and started loudly yelling at passengers. Luckily got off after a few stops. I’m used to occasionally seeing this kind of thing, but today I wondered, does the mentally ill person know they are mentally ill? Are they aware they are frightening others, including kids. What are they feeling when they do these things? I guess whatever is in their heads is logical. I hope to never experience it.
Today at southern cross there was a dude going absolutely crazy at random passers by as well as kids too. Seen a fair bit of it in the CBD over the years but this was next level crazy. I understand we need to throw more resources at mental health but those kids shouldn't have seen that.
There’s a guy like that around where I live. Really scary outbursts of swearing and threats, sexual harassment and intimidation, homophobic rants or slapping things to the ground and throwing lit cigarettes around bushes and wooden fences. Occasionally sleeping on a bench outside my window or sitting there for hours.
It’s unsafe for me to try to help him, police can’t or won’t do anything because he won’t accept help, and outreach services always have some limitation that means they can’t help.
Heading down the bellarine today. Left the chillo seedlings on the heat mat outside since Sat. but I'm expecting some loss after that coldish snap :( With any luck a few made it.
I recently learned about fasces too! Its a bundle of sticks and the iconography goes back centuries (to the Roman Empire at least). And some allegedly non fascist countries continue to use the fasces in official iconography - the wiki article has heaps of examples from the US.
I went down this rabbit hole after watching some videos on the silly antics in the UK parliament including someone trying to walk off with the mace and learning the mace evolved from the fasces and why it's a symbol of power.
Unrelated but did you know until 1998 if you wanted to make a point of order in the House of Commons, you had to wear a top hat? (this was so you could be easily distinguished by the Speaker amongst any chaos. In fact, just before that clip the Speaker actually said "get the hat, I'll hear him. Otherwise I can't", in an already thoroughly farcical debate on banning the use of French in Parliament as a response to the French trying to ban the use of English derived words in their Parliament... how did I get there, I think it was about learning that vestiges of Norman French still remain in the formal parliamentary process. From the 1400s!!!! Okay, I've digressed significantly...)
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did speak out despite not being a trade unionist because I know the next lines.
There's a rally in support of the CFMEU today at 10:30-11, starting from the Victorian Trades Hall. You don't have to be a member of the CFMEU or any union to rock up in support (though you should join a union).
The CFMEU is being ripped apart based on claims that the police never investigated, that never saw a court, and in such a way that suspends the rights of workers within the union. Even if the claims are all true, it's massive overreach that deals very direct damage to democracy and workers rights in this country.
Other non-CFMEU unions are also turning out in solidarity. This is about all our rights.
Everything I've read says it starts at 11 at Trades Hall. (I believe AMWU members are separately meeting at their office at 10.30 before moving to Trades Hall for 11.)
I made the camembert and cherry muffins. The texture is great, but the flavour is a bit incipid. I tasted a bit of the dip first and was underwhelmed by that too, so it is not very surprising. It should be fine for a snack warmed with a bit of butter, or could accompany a soup or stew. 6/10, I'll eat them, but wouldn't make them again.
I almost took the lazy route and skipped the free food market this morning, but it turned out to be a good day and I got lots of good vegies. I also got some camembert and cherry dip I'm not sure what to do with. I'm thinking either using as a filling in some pastry, or muffins. I'm leaning towards muffins as pastry is more hassle.
I think it is savoury with a touch of sweetness. Crackers and wine would work, but is probably not the best option to scoff the lot like that myself...
It's the sweet bit that limits what it goes with. If it was onion or something instead of cherry it could be used for things like a baked potato, with eggs or a much wider range of sandwich fillings. Plus the use by date is today, so I can't really spread out using it up much.
