Power's back. It's working now, but the electrician didn't need to do anything... Was too expensive to replace power socket so it's just sitting there all covered in soot. Hopefully will get a quote for the switchboard and haggle to landlord to deal with it. Honestly, too tired to give a shit.
Thanks everyone for reading me rant yesterday. I got some helpful responses and it really meant a lot to me as I was quite distressed then. This is a nice little community, I love it here :)
I am glad you have power back, even if the switchboard issue is not repaired. You should also ask the landlord about the last electrical safety check which was conducted, as they are legally required to have this done every two years and rectify any problems identified.
From the EnergySafe website:
Rental providers must ensure an electrical safety check of all electrical switchboards, wiring and fittings in the premises is conducted every two years by a licensed electrician.
If requested, they must also provide the renter with the date of the most recent safety check, in writing.
The safety check must be conducted in accordance with section 4 of AS/NZS 3019:2022 “Electrical installations—Periodic assessment”.
If an electrical safety check has not been conducted within the last two years at the time the renter occupies the premises, the rental provider must arrange an electrical safety check as soon as practicable.
If the safety check shows electrical repairs are needed to make the property safe, the rental provider should engage a registered electrical contractor (REC) or a licensed electrician employed by a REC to do the repair work.
An electrical safety check happened a few months ago. I remember they pointed out the switchboard, but it looks like nothing happened of it. I will 100% follow this up with the landlord.

Water got into it. It kept popping and had smoke pop out of it each time (one time fire). It had melted a bunch of plastic and despite being dry it would keep smoking, so that's why we got an electrician. It's no longer smoking so I guess it wasn't completely dry last I checked. I did also clean the socket myself as it had a bunch of grease(?) and weird gunk inside it, so maybe that helped?

Hahaha, probably not. It's a power outlet next to the sink and it has huge gaps where it meets the tile wall. Don't know how this is the first time I got water in it, but it'll probably happen again at some point.

Really felt my holiday was just starting the other day and now I’m back and have sads. Well at least I can tick off some major sightseeing off my list. Was surprised, but the Vatican City for art was definitely one of my favourites. Paid an obnoxious amount for a tour, but it was worth it just to get in a little bit earlier. Tourists are rabid, even in Winter.
Managed to get to sleep, then woke up screaming with horrific leg cramp. Don’t forget some salty things with all that water you should be guzzling!

I'm going to Adelaide in 9 days! There's some sort of out of home care advocacy conference thing happening there over 3 days and I was offered some last minute tickets. I'm mostly there to just watch, but I do need to be the dude who introduces people, although they offer that to all of us that are going, so I'm only introducing a couple of people over the span of a few minutes on one day. Not sure if I should ad lib it or not, but I have names to remember.
I also get free time after the conference finishes, so you bet I'm going on as many Adelaide trains as I can fit in. Last time I was in Adelaide it was rather, err, unsanctioned (I ran away) so I had bigger problems to deal with
I'll have to find my metro card thingy (their version of a Myki). I never thought I'd be going back so I'm pretty sure I actually stuck it in a memory book type thing. Trouble is I don't know where I put that
Bite the bullet, and get a new one. Not worth the stress of hunting down the old one. My last visit to Adelaide was a long time ago, but I was impressed with the bus system.

I think it's because the air is moving. Yesterday was not much wind so to me it felt hotter. Going to be a nasty night once the wind drops though.
I think it's nicer today as long as you aren't in the sun. In the shade it almost feels cool.
Yesterday's waves were non existent, just one every now and then, and small, water like glass. Today's waves easily 1.5-2m on the main beach, and powerful as. Caught some great ones.
There was a bloke at the dog beach in point lonsdale yesterday with a surfboard..
That was a headscratcher.

I do not understand people who cut jeans into shorts so short they are mostly loose flapping pockets. Just looks weird.
They're just showing off that they actually have pockets, unlike the evil bait-and-switch jeans I bought which have a curved seam that mimics where a pocket should go but fails to actually be a pocket.

I'm home from my cheap motel split system utopia. Apartment is gross but I've gotten here early enough in the day to hopefully cool it before the sun really starts hitting the windows.

A cardboard box seems to help heaps. I put that on my west facing windows between the glass and curtain and it’s no longer radiating tons of heat back into the house. I reckon a couple of those windscreen sun-visor things would work a treat too, if they had suction cups on them.
Warned the Mrs if she opens one more blind she’s going outside to play for a while. Glad she doesn’t feel the heat but the rest of us do.

Left the ac on in the bedroom last night, made heaps of difference. Got a decent nights sleep and feeling much more human.
Did not sleep much last night. Not because of the heat, but too many whirling thoughts. I think my brain did at least manage to come up with some solutions to a couple of the problems/challenges rather than just circling pointlessly all night.
I made a start on cleaning up the shed this morning. It is a disgraceful mess, I have no idea where half this stuff even came from! Does engine oil go off? I have a bottle full of oil and I have no idea what it is for or how long it has been there.
It doesn't go off it just loses it's lubrication properties. Toss it if it's been open.
It's hazardous waste - take to recycling centre for proper disposal.
Nah, I'll just add it to my collection of paint tins, gas bottles and fluorescent tubes that I look at occassionally and think "I really must get around to taking those to the recycling centre" before completely forgetting about them again 🤣
Or, with a move likely in the near future I might actually get off my butt and take them.

In other news, the heat seems to have fried drivers' brains - someone nearly turned into me and I did have my lights on so it wasn't a matter of the silver car being harder to see. And I nearly got clipped by a Pajero.
Boy am I looking forward to when I can just walk to the beach.So it was actually OK last night but TONIGHT is when my bedroom has become genuinely too uncomfortable to sleep in - maybe the bricks have heated up fully and are now holding that lovely thermal mass or whatever. Despite the frustration of unfolding my shithouse sofa bed so late at night, I am sleeping in the airconditioned lounge tonight. Goodnight you all.

Eye protection was a good call. I started wearing safety glasses a few days ago, today Miss Moo shook her head and a lens caught a few microdroplets of ear medicine that would have gone dangerously close to my eye. I washed my face and lips just to be sure. She's still not big on wet food. Won't eat it.
I'm still finding tiny pieces of glass sticking to my feet. The stick vac isn't that powerful and struggles to get into corners. When the broom is dry from its quick bristle wash I will sweep
It's way past time for the cat's eardrops and I don't wanna... She's still a bit flat and sooky so I'm calling in the morning to try and get onto the specialist for this week.
I started up my PC to play BG3 again, and have just been distracted by everything else instead.
Finally sitting down now. In the time it has taken me to traverse Act 2, my partner has completed 3 playthrough 😭 sometimes I hate that I cannot concentrate on games or hobbies for as long as I used to. Ugh
I can't play anything that warms up my GPU. My cooling is simply too good and actively heats my room by dissipating that heat.
So I've been playing lots of Halo The Master Chief Collection. Starting up my legendary Halo CE playthrough again!
Quick edit: Also BG3 is very good! I haven't played since finishing 8 runs in the first two weeks of release. I should do another.

It'll be worth it, I have already planned what I want to do when I replay it. Stuff I've done that my partner didn't realise could be done. It is insane how much freedom there is with certain choices, even combat approach.

I braved the heat to fill my car with bags to take to the op shop tomorrow. I fitted in way more than I thought I would, only 2 bags left for now - but I'm about to start filling up more! I'll need to buy more bags when I am out tomorrow, this decluttering jag is going through them at a great rate.

So today I'll take it easy.I have decided to donate my bike if I can find someone who wants it. It is currently mostly a collection of parts that need to be put together, as I intended to do some repairs and got as far as buying parts and tools and pulling it apart before losing enthusiasm. I have made enquiries with the local communiy centre that does regular bike repair and demonstration workshops, I'm hoping they will be interested in taking it to use as a demonstration project that can then be donated as a working bike to someone who needs it.
CERES or Bicycle Recycle might be interested. If you near Springvale I can give you a hand assembling it. I like working on bikes.

Grab an inflatable air bed from kmart or similar if you don't want to give up the space permanently. They're pretty comfy for a couple of nights.
If you are rich, these folding beds are the best way to set up a temporary spare bed. Maybe you'll get lucky and someone is offering one second hand cheaply?
If you are not burdened with too much money, I recommend these self-inflating things. We take them camping and they're a lot more comfortable than they have any right being. Your guest will effectively be sleeping in the floor, though.

I put Robot Dreams on thinking it'll just be nice in the background but for a simple animated film with no dialogue or a particularly complex plot, I can't believe how moved I was by the end. Went for a drive out to Altona for a crunchwrap supreme from Taco Bell and then over to ... I just checked the maps and apparently it's Laverton North but it's not where I'd say Laverton North is.. anyway I took the car over to "Laverton North" for a nice wash to get the bugs and road off from my long weekend adventures.

The wildlife water dried up and blew down while I was asleep. It's the light material and the flat wide aerodynamic shape. The raised placement also lets gusts of wind get under to pick it up. I put it in that spot for a reason and chose a shallow dish so animals/insects don't drown but it's a bit inconvenient.
I put it back, peeled the huge block of ice out of the silicone bowl/jelly mould to weigh it down and filled it the rest of the way with water from the tap. The ice should keep the platter held down for a while and keep everything cool. It can also slowly refill the water as it melts.

I had to go back to a previous mass effect save game. Didn't gather enough resources. Bugger.
Just started watching Yellowstone. Not usually into this genre but it's intriguing so far.
I need to sand the nib of my charcoal pencil to get the angle more gradual, because as it is the tip narrows to a point a bit steeply and creates a slight curve. That's why marks were ending up lower than I wanted, because when I tried to hold the pencil vertically the curved side was easier to brush on the paper than the flatter side of the tip.
This happened because I didn't have a sandpaper block and used an emery board. The smaller size encourages me to use smaller movements and just quickly get the tip sharp rather than sweep it in larger arcs at a flatter angle for a gradual sharpening to a point. I can possibly fix it with the emery board but will have to be conscious of what I'm doing
Watched half of Poor Things. The camera work is stunning, the production design amazing. The story is trite. I quit half way through.
