While I agree, companies collude and soon we have no options.
Moreover, companies often unilaterally decide to cripple something you already have a paywall it after the fact (case in point, this garbage bassinet)

The kind of people who would spend $1700 on something like this aren't the kind of people to track down/install custom firmware.
