Australia’s wealthiest person comes under the microscope after unsuccessfully trying to get the National Gallery to remove a painting of her by an acclaimed Aboriginal artist.
Thought you all might find this interesting. I like this artist, but can imagine seeing oneself portrayed this way could be jarring.
My favorite part is that she hasn't been singled out at all, and that hers is simply one of many portraits done in the same style.
As far as I know, she's the only one that has raised a stink about it. Which is why her portrait needs to be put on t-shirts, mugs, stickers, and every other medium for widespread, ongoing appreciation of what the artist was able to capture so accurately.
Ive got that weird sense of humor where I would be like “do my portrait!” And then hang that shit in the guest bathroom in my house. I’ll be weirdly excited every time someone new goes in there to see what they say after.
At first, I kind of understood how it could be seen as unflattering but changed my opinion when I learned that her money came from mining, the painting is far too kind. As someone who grew up where mining was part of the culture, fuck her and every other mine owner.
All her money came from her father. What makes it worse is that she ended up suing her own children to get their inheritance that her father left them.
