Family of Omaha-born Malcolm X files $100M lawsuit, alleges FBI, CIA, NYPD had role in murder
  • Good luck to them. MLK and Malcom X were critical voices in the civil rights movement, and they were lost too early. If the government was involved (as it appears it was at least passively) in the assassination, they should face some accountability.

  • Federal Reserve cuts its key interest rate by a quarter-point amid postelection uncertainty
  • Inflation is down, but prices haven't come down--they are just not in increasing as fast as they were. We would technically need deflation for that to happen. That said, you are absolutely right that the 'better' economy will get attributed to Trump and he'll go on making messes elsewhere until he dies or leaves office.

  • I'm feeling like just hiding in bed for the next 4 years. Friends on Lemmy, got any advice for us Americans coping with the oncoming shit show that is the Trump GOP takeover?

    My Campy Halloween Movies
  • Oh Tremors is a great idea! And I've been debating whether to watch John Dies at the End because I love the books and wasn't sure if the movie would be as good. Will add that to the list. Thanks!

  • My Campy Halloween Movies

I'm doing a month-long series of campy, classic and unique horror movies. I'm pretty liberal in what gets included, trying for a lot of variety. I'm particularly a fan of spooky comedies (like the Burbs), and generally avoiding big franchise horror series to see more unique stuff.

I'm enjoying seeing so many movies I would never come across any other way, even if many of them aren't all that great. So far my favorite is probably Cabin in the Woods or Happy Death Day.

Anything I should add to the list?

    Watched (in order)

The Burbs Batman Death Becomes Her Slotherhouse Cabin in the Woods Happy Death Day Llamageddon The Thing Pride and Prejudice and Zombies The Final Girls Attack of the Killer Donuts Drag Me to Hell Ernest Scared Stupid Final Girl Killer Sofa

    Coming up (no particular order)

We have a ghost The Babysitter Antebellum The Fly Little Monsters Rocky Horror Picture Show Last Night in Soho The Mousetrap Hell Baby Get Out Us Happy Death Day 2U Leprechaun The Cult of Humpty Dumpty Prom Night Killer Klowns From Outer Space Lisa Frankenstein Becky Cinderella's Revenge Saturday the 14th The Monster Squad Severance

Google asks [US] 9th Circuit for emergency stay, says Epic ruling ‘is dangerous’
  • The timeline is absolutely ridiculous considering the scale at which Google play operates. However I otherwise don't feel a bit sorry for them. It's probably a foreign experience to most of the Google team to have a competitive challenge and if they are up to it they'll be fine. If not, I guess that's the free market at work...

(Also, is it Epics entire business model to just sue their way into relevance? I'm happy to see the big tech firms squeal but seriously it's like Epic wants their entire brand to be about suing competitors.)

Defunding planned parenthood would affect much more than abortion
  • Okay, but saying we are doing one dumb thing but justifying it by saying 'well we already are doing these other dumb/horrible things guess the whole system is broken' is simply giving up on the whole concept of organized government.

There is no government anywhere in the world, now or any time in history, that has done everything perfectly. But individual improvements to human rights and protections get us closer than just throwing ones hands up when it isn't perfect out of the gate.

We still fight stupid ideas like basically everything JD Vance has ever said because those ideas move us in the wrong direction. Defeating his idiocy doesn't make everything else perfect but it sure as hell keeps it from getting worse, and hopefully makes it easier to make more positive changes in the future.

  • This is right on the line of creepy surveillance and interesting public art project. I kind of like the idea but not a fan of the fact that it's recording in stealth. I wish it were more transparent about it. Most people wouldn't care anyway and it removes some of the discomfort of listening in on a bunch of strangers.

  • Fidelity has cut its estimate of X's value by 79% since Musk's purchase
  • A part of me thinks that some of this is deliberate- like once it was clear he was going to have to follow up with the twitter deal the places/people that funded him did so on the condition that he tank it.

I know that's insane but I really am struggling to see how anyone could commit this many public fuckups unintentionally.

Your favorite video game doesn't need a remake | Digital Trends

Curious about y'alls opinions on this. I like the idea of getting new people to experience an older game by aligning it to modern graphics and accessibility standards. But capitalizing on nostalgia with quick updates to that make it look modern rather than making new games seems like just more of studios trying to squeeze money out of us.

Kaldi's Classic Black coffee (and many others) Recalled due to botulinum

    cross-posted from: https://sh.itjust.works/post/21185511

    > TLDR: A coffee factory has recalled coffees they produce under many other labels due to botulinum toxins. LOTS of coffee companies are on this list so it's worth a look even if you don't drink Kaldi's. You can toss or return coffee for a refund. > > > It's a little unclear, but the article makes it sound like the Kaldis classic black and all the others are the same coffee, just repackaged coffee for each brand. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but I thought I was buying local when I bought their stuff. I'm a little disappointed.
