A new bid to place a measure on the ballot that would ask California voters to approve the state's secession from the U.S. has been cleared for signature gathering.
They pay more than nearly every other state in taxes, and the motherfuckers at the Federal Government are unironically talking about withholding disaster aid after a historic wildfire in the nation's second-largest city. They should get a blank check to rebuild and help their people because they pay a fuckton in taxes. It's as simple as that.
That statement requires an awfully large asterisk.
Yes, California pays the most in taxes, but only because the population is so much larger. It also gets most of the back. Whether California is a "giver" or a "taker" state depends on exactly how you measure it, and what year. Regardless, it's always very close to even.
But yes, the premise of federal disaster aide is horribly broken. It shouldn't work as a Congressional GoFundMe after each disaster hits, where donors get to decide if they "deserve" the money. Either Congress has disaster aide setup, or it doesn't. That needs to apply to California, Florida, or wherever.
We are not leaving. This is a scam / hail mary to remove the largest blue state from the electoral college. They tried it a few years ago and it went nowhere.
Do NOT fall for this shit, they’ve tried it before. This makes america an easy red majority and that’s the entire point of it. We’re in this together and not going anywhere
If California leaves, I really don't see the rest of the country showing any unity. Oregon and Washington would immediately leave to join the new country of California. Texas leaves because fuck everyone else. Oklahoma (and others) would leave expecting to join Texas, but won't be allowed in.
