I had such a good day yesterday. It's really rare that I'll have a day that starts good and stays good all day
When I woke up I realised I woke up too early and could sleep for another hour, which strangely made me happy, and it was kind of cold in my room so it was so cozy in my bed. Then I went for a walk and it was a nice temp. My bus ran on time, my train was on time and less busy than usual, my tram ran on time and had lots of seats.
I went to an advocacy training thing for kids in out of home care, and found out that it leads to lots of exciting positions that actually pay a decent amount (I was under the impression that it was all volunteer). I had a great time + free lunch. I asked like a thousand questions, and it seems like a great opportunity to do something that actually seems to make a difference and affect the course of legislature and government policy, which seems like a much more rewarding field to work in then selling people grease burgers in sugar buns
I had teriyaki chicken for dinner, which is one of my favourite things to make, even though I haven't had it for a while. And I finished the day off by falling asleep pretty effortlessly
Cross fingers for me everyone - I just put an offer in on the unit I want to buy.
I was going to do it tomorrow after my aunt and I had another look, but I went to another OFI at the last minute and a woman with a family was very keen, so I got my offer in. Hopefully the fact that my offer is unconditional (inspection done, finance sorted) will give me the edge!
They're dirty little bastards. I've watched them fight over a piece of fruit, spit it out, gnaw on the seed, toss then start on another piece. I think they use the seed to sharpen their beaks.
A swarm of them got into my neighbour’s tree a few years back. Not sure what sort of fruit it was but they all fell on my roof and created a massive racket early one morning.
I think they’ve removed that tree now though as I haven’t had a repeat of it since.
Yo whaddap guys I'm awake before 10am and am going to steady my nerves and start refining my CV today before I get sucked into some other form of media.
Also clean the fuck out of the mess I left in the kitchen yesterday.
And accept the fact that I may have thrips on this peace lily I inherited from my deceased neighbour and need to do something about it stat, even though it feels futile. Eco-oil is all I have at the moment, guess I'll try that.
e: woof, first psychiatrist telehealth appt of the year, no safety net, $250 gone like that... but I did get 35 minutes rather than the 15-20 minutes I'd normally get, and I've locked in 6 months worth of scripts so I'll take it
I’ve been neglecting the plants. Most of the spinnos are gone, the two remaining starting to bolt. Everything else is alive.
The rosemary cuttings in the paper cups on the windowsill are still bent wrong in the stem but have new growth.
I pulled up the biggest carrots to make room for the rest to grow. I haven’t been keeping up on the fertiliser so they’re a bit slow growing and small. Tiny even.
But they look like little round carrots and have a strong carrot smell.
I went to a Korean place for lunch (oriental spoon on Elizabeth St). I had always assumed it would be average and overpriced due to its really good location. I was wrong! It was relatively cheap, $18 lunch special Bento Box which was huge - had bulgogi, spriNg rolls, fried chicken, salad. I got a serve of beef bulgogi on a sizzling plate, it came with rice and the side dishes of kimchi etc. it was $22 and ENOURMOUS, and delicious! I'm guessing like 400g of just beef, definitely meant for two people. I somehow ate it all which baffled my dining companion. 8.5/10. Food coma worth it
Feeling rather ordinary today, between the infection itself, the antibiotics and the tetanus injection. At least I don't have to go anywhere.
Still no sign of pakige. Poo. :(
Thank goodness I have tomorrow off. Boss has been a hard taskmaster this week and I'm knackered. It made me feel old and sad, that I can't work at the pace of a workaholic man a couple of years younger than me🤦🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️ About 80% of this first week back seemed to consist of things I haven't done before, and I really tried to be as helpful as possible but didn't really nail it. I guess I work to live and not the other way around.
REA sending someone, hopefully they come soon. Atleast I won't have to pay for this one 💁♂️
E: God damn it. The REA sent me details of the tradie and when I called him, he said he's not working until next week. What the hell REA 🙄 now they aren't answering the phone ffs
E2: an hour back the new tradie said they'll be there within the hour but now they called and said they won't be here until 4pm. I'm so annoyed now. Annoyed and jetlagged.
Update: tradie came and finally let me in after 5 hours. phew. i am tired now, but if i sleep now, i'll definitely be wide awake at night so gotta push through 🥱
Ya'll ever have one of those meetings where the second its done your boss calls you and you both just sigh loudly in a defeated manor, or is that just my workplace?
If it's not toast, porridge or pancakes, I have to move it closer to lunchtime and have it as brunch because I can't do big brekkies like I used to. When I was a drinker I had no problem knocking over a massive plate of cooked breakfast 🤔
Awake early and was stressing. What’s the best oven cleaner to use? Is gumption ok? Have a can of bam or something also. Oven has a cycle to moisten the inside but that’s it.
I usually leave it too long between oven cleans, and I don’t have the will to sit there scrubbing, so I go straight for the strongest stuff. I use one of those spray on foam oven cleaners. Warning: it’s stinky and irritating so you’ll need to open a window and have fan on. Follow the instructions on the can and it will get the job done, oven will sparkle.
Skincare enthusiasts. Please recommend me a moisturizer for my face. Currently I just use the sunscreen on my face - Beauty of Joseon something, a friend made me buy it 💁♂️ and I really like the finish as it's not shiny. I think I have combination skin (t zone is oily I guess?)
Not really an enthusiast as such, but I use the cheap stuff, and I like it better than the spenso stuff. Redwin Vitamin E Cream with Evening Primrose Oil. A few bux at colesworth for 330g. Not shiny or greasy, and being cheap you can slather it on all over if you need to - eg sunburn. It's not heavily perfumed - I hate strongly scented face cream. Sunscreen goes over it just fine. Sorbolene cream in the generic pump pack is my other go to if I want a bit more oomph, but this can be a bit greasy if you use too much or don't massage it in. Unperfumed.
If you're not fussed about labels, then try the baby aisle for baby lotion - this is very effective for caring for sensitive skin or combination skin. I don't care for the perfume in it though.
How is the vitamin E cream for sensitive skin that easily stings and reddens? Looking for an alternative to Cerave as it’s not the cheapest and I’m almost out.
(Even unscented Sorbolene will irritate my face because apparently there’s a tiny bit of detergent/surfactant in it. Perfume is another big irritant.)
I put on Natio 50+ daily face moisturiser in the morning which is quite light, then in the evening use Sukin sensitive cleansing lotion and Sukin night moisturiser as a heavier moisturiser for overnight. I buy them when they’re on special and usually have at least one spare in the drawer. I didn’t take the night sunscreen or night moisturiser with me when I was overseas for 3 weeks and my skin looked badly aged when I got back 😭 it’s come good with my usual routine, thank goodness.
"Fire and police services were called to the Free Choice Tobacconist on Pier St, Altona in Melbourne's south west about 4am after the alleged arson was witnessed by members of the public. Police believe the arsonists threw jerry cans through the smashed front window of the shop before setting it alight."
What the fuck is going on in Melbourne? This following two firebombings of ice cream shops in Williamstown makes me think we need to change the number plate slogan - "Victoria - the crime state"
Car rammed a cafe at Williamstown North/Altona North on Miller's road last weekend too. There's definitely some sort of crime gang stuff playing out our west at the moment.
Sounds like a protection racket in progress. ABC podcast 'firebomb' about something similar in WA is interesting. And there's been a string of arson attacks on tobacco shops that refuse to stock a crime syndicate's illegal cigs. Coincidence? No.
I’m so tired and still a bit sick. But crawling out of my skin with boredom and understimulation. There’s plenty to do but nothing is quite satisfying or able to hold my attention. This heat feels sticky.
Between my physical energy and my feral neighbourhood I can’t even go for a walk.
The cat won’t let me back into the bed so I’m just going to take the end and try to have another nap.
15 tortillas have now been made. I now know that it takes an average of 3 minutes per tortilla to roll & cook. Normally I only make a couple at a time, this was way more than I have done in one go before. I have gone a bit overboard for three people, but anticipate lots of yummy leftovers.
It's pretty much just mixing flour and water to a dough, rolling out portions as flat as possible, then cooking on a hot pan. The difference in taste between home made and store bought is huge. It's like the difference between a fresh loaf of bread from a bakery and three day old supermarket bread.
Moobeans keeps being fussy and not leading me to what she wants… turns out she keeps eating a hole in her biscuits. Heaps left though.
I had raised the bowl to see if that’s more comfortable but it might be too high for her to comfortably eat anywhere but the middle. She also had a lot of wet food today, seems hungrier in general
Taco Thursday preps are almost complete. Just tortilla making to go. I have lots of little containers in the fridge: carnitas (the meat), lime-pickled onion, sliced jalapeno, roasted tomato salsa, lime & yoghurt sauce and pico de gallo. I will just slice the avocado rather than doing guacamole. I also have individual servings of caramel flan for desert.
Thoughts on the rumour that Costco Docklands is closing?
I kind of think it's a good riddance. The inner city is ill suited for an automotive dependant single story superstore. It's fun when a V/Line replacement coach gets stuck in the queue of drivers wanting to turn into Costco.
In Japan you have to head well out of the way to visit Costco. The only one in Tokyo is in Hachioji. Otherwise you have to visit Yokohama, Saitama or Chiba prefecture.
As a westie I’m excited. Ardeer is closer to me, I will actually consider doing my shopping there. Car dependant store never belonged in Docklands. Although I wonder what will become of Docklands with Costco gone, it is probably the number one reason for people who don’t live in Docklands to visit.
