Milley says military is not woke: ‘I’m not even sure what that word truly means’
  • for me, for example, it means “people who are all over their head with cancel culture”; it also means people [who use the word] are probably a bunch of far right crazies.

So overall I guess it’s a way to describe the two far ends of the same thing

  • Tried Andor after taking a break from Star Wars and realized that the galaxy where politics is determined by magic laser sword people now wants to be serious.
  • Stormtroopers are robots!

Jokes aside, you don’t have to have everything explained to understand something. Yes, they didn’t show the bodies but you with a little use from logic you can see that Leia complaining about her pacific, weaponless planet being blown means it’s not desert. Same goes for the Death Star on which you see there are people until a few seconds later where it blows up. Same goes for everything.

Sure, maybe a kid won’t pick it up but that doesn’t mean Star Wars was light hearted in the OT

  • Tried Andor after taking a break from Star Wars and realized that the galaxy where politics is determined by magic laser sword people now wants to be serious.
  • Suure, Aalderan is in the sequel; Death Star 1 and 2 is in the sequel; Obi Wan cut the limbs off a few aliens in the first half of A New Hope. Slavery is shown with Princess Leia in the third instalment of OT. There are more women in the same scene with basically no clothes that make you think they aren't "just" slaves. And I almost forgot, Han gets tortured in Ep 5 as well

Like, the hell are you smoking lol

  • Tried Andor after taking a break from Star Wars and realized that the galaxy where politics is determined by magic laser sword people now wants to be serious.
  • I mean, in Lion King and Land Before Time do:

    • people get slaughtered?
    • limbs get cut?
    • younglings get slayed?
    • there is slavery
    • there is a fascist regime

If yes, then yes they aren't light-hearted movies. You consider SW a light hearted movie just cause you haven't put much of a thought behind what things really are, but SW isn't light hearted at all lol. Unless, that is, for you that stuff is light hearted, but then I dunno what you may consider not light hearted

  • Poland says it will no longer supply Ukraine with weapons

This alongside most eastern members, so it clearly is more than just a "next election" move; surely that plays a part, as always, but the problem is objective and is there.

Ukraine economy is guaranteed by both EU and US, so they don't need to trade their grain in Europe.

    From the article:

On Wednesday, Zelenskiy used his speech to the UN general assembly to accuse the countries of hypocrisy and acting in Russia’s interests. “It’s alarming to see how some in Europe play out solidarity in a political theatre – making a thriller from the grain,” he said. “They may seem to play their own role but in fact they are helping set the stage to a Moscow actor.”

Accusing people that have been handing out resources to your country to be Moscow's shill is gaslighting and, frankly, pathetic.

  • Grisham, Martin join authors suing OpenAI: "There is nothing fair about this"
  • Why should we ban AI, a really useful technology, also for co-collaboration within the Arts, just because some people will make money with it? Art has been constant copypaste remixing anyhow.

I said ban for creative works, at least for commercial use, which is a very little part of what can be done with AI; and maybe personal informations processing though, cause you know... privacy

Why would anyone read GOT in space when they can just read GOT? The people opting for GOT in space will most likely already have read GOT anyhow

Because it won't be called GoT: space edition, it will be a rip-off of GoT with the same overarching story and characters but in a scifi/whatever setting. And yes, it already happens: many TV series on Netflix are a rip off of other successful series (most of the time produced by Netflix), which flood the platform; it happens with every single successful serie. You can find dozens if not more of the same, fucking, TV serie with a different name but with the same old jokes, characters, plot point and sometime style.

Why do people watch them anyway? For the same reason cable TV is so trash: cheap entertainment works, no matter how shitty it is; it happens with anime/manga/light novels too.

And yes, it is shitty. But at least it takes time to write and produce that crap, while with AI it will be immediate and cheap. Cheap and immediate means they will produce so much crap, finding quality stuff will be nigh impossible since it will cost much much more to produce with less earnings than garbage.

It will never surpass the original

I think you don't watch, play games et similia... originality is a luxury nowadays. Why do you think Netflix cancels every single serie that isn't a hit in the first few months? Cause they can. It is cheaper and lucrative to cancel what doesn't work and re-iterate on the same shitty formula until the crap sticks on the wall. And it works, they do it, and they do it now.

Also copyright should never forbid someone to write in the style of someone else. How would you even proove it?

It's already happening. Before, humans used to do the exact same. Why is it be different now with AI? It's just more and faster imo.

This is quite easy actually, while it's hard for technical things. Taking inspiration doesn't mean copying. Modern "AI" doesn't think, which means anything it does is a copy.

We are already reaching, if we aren't already, a Fahrenheit 451 level of entertainment, "AI" will surely put the final nail on the coffin.

"AI" are a beautiful thing, but in our current society, where profits is everything and people are nothing but a number, they are the scariest shit ever

  • Grisham, Martin join authors suing OpenAI: "There is nothing fair about this"
  • It is likely that we will reach a point where these ML things will recognise patterns across creative works, see what sell and use them to make similar stories using those same patterns.

Which is clear they will sell more since they will be cheaper, faster to make thus flooding the market with engaging-but-unoriginal stories.

Imagine: a GOT in space, a GOT in fantasy, a mix between Star Wars and GOT, and so on. And they will always sell cause GoT is engaging, but none will be original but a soulless copy of the original GoT (for which Martin won’t see a buck).

Tbf, i think it would be better to ban this kind of “AI” - like ChatGPT, or the ones for the art et similia - from “producing” creative work - at least creative work to be sold - but capitalism gotta capitalise I guess.

EDIT: to be fair right now the main concern is about copyrighted creative work, but probably it’s the easier to ascertain if it’s been copied or not: take for example programming code, there are very few ways to know if a copyrighted code has been used and it will probably show how copyright is SO dumb and fallacious for technical and whatnot fields

It would be great if we could add a custom accent color (for example, I’d like to use the hex #f45)

is it normal i'm afraid to do a coworker PR, even though i am forced to by my teamlead?

Tldr: coworker lash out at me for doing his PRs, he always wants to call after I review his stuff so I can read the shit I wrote in the comments live. What can I do?

I’m a junior FE dev and there is a guy on my team, with more YOE then me, whose PRs are, most of the time, a mess.

He improved recently, after we had a big fight after three out of three PRs were broken - as in, full of errors, bugs and with missing/half backed features. Nonetheless, his PRs are a time sink:

    • he doesn’t follow the design closely, which means I waste a lot of time pointing out obvious differences
    • he is huge hack - his motto is “if it works, it’s good”; as you can imagine this means his code works by God’s grace, which makes me believe he is a part-time messiah (it works until it doesn’t anymore after all).
    • Finally, the thing I hate the most, is that he always wants to call for us to fix his stuff together, which would be fine if it were hard but it’s not, we don’t do anything hard and our work is mostly mechanical. And if he is in a bad mood, which he is most of the time, he lash out at me telling me to merge his stuff and that he will fix it later

So well, a few days after our fight I did a small experiment: I merged every PR he sent me. It went down as well as you can imagine, to the point where the team lead asked me to fix the history and the mess he made (and I had to drop a lot of commits).

And well, I thought “here, he finally got it!”. Except he didn’t, his PRs are still a mess - albeit with slightly better testing [as in, now they are with a lot of warnings and differences with the design and hacks, but no breaking error most of the time!] - and he still wants to call me every time I did a review, which means I have to review the same fucking PR twice - if I’m lucky.

thrown into a backend project as a backend dev with a language I don't know, how fucked am I?

The title itself is a recipe for disaster. Also this is a semi rant.

Yesterday I was informed that I will have the honour to implement the core functionality - which is an interface layer to use the driver of a very expensive hardware shit - of the software I’ve been working on as a frontend dev.

There are two possibilities for the language: C++ or C#. The one that was proposed/imposed is C#, which I know nothing of, while at least I have some hobbyist experience with C++; when asked if I could take some time to familiarise myself with C# I was basically laughed in the face, saying I will learn on the field and at least some of them have some experience with it.

Should I insist to go with C++, or is that an even worse idea in an already fucked up situation?

Is it normal to design a database without writing an analysts first but basing it on the design?

The other day I asked for an analysis or at least an UML diagram since we are having quite some troubles and my boss looked disgusted at me for asking such a question. I’m not a professional backend developer, so I don’t know how it works professionally

Hearts of Iron 4 on Wayland doesn't work

Hi everyone! Yesterday I bought Hearts of Iron 4 on Steam but it didn't run at all on wayland. I tried using Proton Experimental, Proton GE latest, Proton 8.0.2 but none worked (even though on ProtonDB people say it works with proton 8.0.2). Then I switched to Xorg (which I never use and I would like not to), and it suddenly worked... is there a way to play it on Wayland or is it just Xorg?

    Using:

    • archlinux (everything updated)
    • mesa latest from the stable repository
    • wine-staging
    • RX 6900XT
    • Gnome 44
