Biden tells Democratic governors he needs more sleep and plans to stop scheduling events after 8 p.m.
  • Honestly I feel it is so, so optimistic to believe any hardcore Democratic supporter will ever blame Biden if he loses.

    Order of blame assigned:

    1. The FUCKING LEFTISTS for being critical of him, which means none of them voted for him and also they’re responsible for anyone else that didn’t vote!!
    2. Gen Z and/or Millennials, for some reason
    3. People who live in areas where their vote counts for less (ie, anyone in a city or a populous state)
    4. Oh I guess the Republicans shouldn’t have run Trump and then voted for him
  • NH Supreme Court Hears Case On Whether ‘Keep New England White’ Banner Constitutes Free Speech
  • "White supremacist banners get taken down more often than other banners" isn't actually evidence of unequal enforcement, because white supremacist banners almost certainly get reported to the cops immediately by a lot of people, whereas other banners are largely ignored if they aren't offensive. Especially because it's entirely legal to put up banners if you have a permit, so people have no reason to call the cops every time they see a banner.

  • Seriously, almost all the posts are just doom scrolling. And yes, I'm aware of the irony
  • Better post about how doomed you are, that’ll fix it.

But for real, some of the communities I’m in have a rule about not posting about negative stories without adding a way to take action, a way to contribute, etc so that it’s not just doom scrolling negativity. Bad news is everywhere and it’s easy to find, anyone can do that.

Taking those bad feelings and channeling them towards something other than wallowing in how bad things are is the important part, not posting and reading. Someone who reads one bad news story a week and calls their representative about it is doing infinitely more than someone who reads every negative story out there to stay “informed”.

  • What's the best way to perserve bread?
  • Freezer or countertop is the best bet, personally I think the fridge makes it feel too gummy. It also makes it absorb moisture weirdly. Freezer bread is best toasted or grilled, but it’s fine for regular sandwiches too.

  • Thanks for clarifying, the ‘real meaning’ part was something I’ve heard people use to minimize what’s currently happening. I agree that Trump is going to be worse if he’s elected, I just don’t think that should stop people from criticizing the current response to it.

  • We coulda had Bernie...
  • Just straight up memory-holed the summer of 2020? And the election I guess, since people did turn out and Clinton got more votes than Trump? Let me know how blaming people for living in an undemocratic system works for hyping up voters.

  • [Serious] What's your hot take?
  • If you let your cat outside in the Americas (or anywhere cats haven’t lived for thousands of years) unsupervised I’m going to assume one of the following is true: you don’t care if your cat dies, and/or you don’t care about wildlife. Even if you live in a place with zero predators, why the hell are you trusting a CAT with road safety?

Saying this as someone who grew up with parents that let our cats live (and die, a lot) that way. And as someone who has seen two friends lose cats to coyotes in the past year. And also interrupted an attack on someone’s pet by a coyote. It’s been a bad fucking year here for coyotes.

  • Useful idiot
  • Oh, I see what you mean now! A factor is 10x more, that’s why I was confused about what you were saying. (edit: ignore this; I am dumb) The figure I saw might have been for people in acute starvation vs severe food insecurity or something like that. I know the situation is fucking dire regardless.

  • Useful idiot
  • Not sure if you’re saying 10000x more or 10000x less people are starving, but that number seems off too. Half a million is the number I saw in an AP article from around a week ago.

  • Well, AI made our search unusable dogshit. But AI *also* made us miss our climate goals, so
  • “It only uses 5x as much energy as a regular search! Think of how much energy YOU’RE using with searches!” Okay, so you’re just using 5x as much energy for worse results? And also probably doing it more often than people who just use a normal search engine, because they don’t expect the search engine to talk to them. I’ve never understood how that was supposed to be an exoneration for it, even without taking into account that nobody ever seems to know whether or not that figure includes energy spent on training.

In your country, what "common" animals are tourists most excited to see?

It has always amused me that the tourists to the US that I’ve spoken to are often very excited to see raccoons, and disappointed if they don’t see them before they leave.

Some others I’ve noticed on the east coast of the US are blue jays and cardinals. Boy, do people get excited about those if they’ve never seen them before! Very pretty birds of course, just very easy to get used to and see as uninteresting as well.

    Unexpected pros/cons of transitioning

    Socially, medically, or otherwise.

Unexpected T pro: my cat loves aggressively head butting my facial scruff after a day or two of not shaving

Unexpected T con: my cat’s hair gets caught up in my facial hair any time I do this and it’s annoying to get it all out

Alt text: pictures of suburban neighborhoods and homes with text over it that reads: “this is no place of honor. No esteemed deed is commemorated here. What is here is dangerous and repulsive to us. Turn back.”

What is the strangest tech related bug you can't resolve?

Note: this is not a request for troubleshooting help.

For the past few years my 10ish year old “smart” TV will maybe once a week or so completely lose the ability to play sound in the Youtube app, and only in the Youtube app. Sound works just fine everywhere else. Bizarrely this is always triggered by an ad and never a video. Restarting the app doesn’t fix it, and neither does clearing the cache. Fortunately doing a full restart of the TV fixes it, it’s just irritating to have to restart because an ad somehow broke the sound.

    What technological gremlins haunt you?

We fired the art department and replaced them with an orb. It hovers about four feet off the ground and follows us around the office. Sometimes it feels like it's waiting for something. Sometimes it follows you home. Jim says it told him to dig into the dirt. It will save the company twelve dollars.
