A running list of politicians talking about making divorce harder | On the right, there is a renewed push to enshrine family values by pushing against no-fault divorce laws.
Isn't there a direct correlation between murders of spouses and lack of no fault divorce? I'm pretty sure I've read that before like once no fault divorce became a fact murders of spouses went down am I crazy?
I can almost guarantee the people who want no-fault marriages gone are the same type of people who also want women to be completely subservient slaves who can't say "No" to men, no matter how illegal the request.
I was relistening to an episode of the podcast "The age of Napoleon" and it was about the Code Civile and (partly) about how it reverted women's rights concerning divorce. During the French revolution women gained a lot of rights, including the rights to divorce from abusive husbands. The Code Civile actually reverted some of those rights, hence why this was mentioned, but it's quite amazing that over 200 years we are still having these discussions.
Is it really that difficult to not consider 50% of the population inferior by default?
I’m reminded of the quote “in the game of patriarchy women aren’t a team but the ball”.
But also no fault divorce benefits everyone except people who want to be married to people who don’t want to be married to them. It also benefits the children. My parents really should’ve divorced considering how much they couldn’t stand each other.
Whenever you hear a politician talk about a "decline in family values", what they're talking about is escape from abusive domestic situations being too easy.
Like seriously, you can draw a straight line from basically every domestic policy in the western conservative ethos and "if this isn't implemented it becomes too easy for members of our in group to leave the in group."
More reactionary sects outright state this to be the entire point, the orthodox community in New York waged a years long court battle with the state gov about wanting religious exemptions from education standards, and openly stated that it was because they knew better education standards would lead to more young folks being able to leave the community without fear of not being able to sustain themselves.
Shit you could argue a lot of right wing foreign policy is a macro-projection of this mindset, Kissinger was a proponent of the "school" of "realism", IE "fuck smaller countries they have no right to choose for themselves they're just extensions of whatever superpower is their primary controller." Also the angle that dropping more bombs assists international spread of this ethos by bringing men who'll enforce this view to the top of organizational leadership within warzones. Shit Russia literally has a policy of the tactical use of genocidal rape because it'll leave behind traumatized women, some of whom will end up raising traumatized, and therefore more likely to be violent, ethnic Russians for future Russian invasions to claim as irredentist causus belli.
As someone who went through a no-fault divorce, I can say the process is difficult and expensive enough already. It is definitely not easy, and it is not as easy as changing your underwear, contrary to what some right wing liar may tell you. And as the article points out, no-fault divorce has been of enormous benefit to women. Ending no-fault divorce is about controlling and dominating women, full stop.
“Talk to a psychologist, a sociobiologist or a mother and you learn that men are naturally restless and rowdy, maybe even a little incorrigible,” Cotton explained. “Throughout time, though, women and social institutions have conspired to break man’s unruliness. In the past few decades, however, they have largely abandoned that noble and necessary project.”
If you’re an adult of any gender and aren’t adulting, it’s not my job to parent you.
