I've been thinking of a solution to this for a while now but the problem persists. I'd love to not have to indefinitely increase my Google drive storage, and in fact I have a home server with terabytes of free space on it where my and my wife's photos get automatically backed up. The problem though is that they're so much more usable and accessible in Google Photos. We have shared albums with our friends and family of our kid, of vacations and events. If I don't remember when that funny picture of a duck was taken I can search "duck" or see a heat map of my photo library.
The same problem is true with Proton Drive. I mean, I did just set up photo backup because why not, I have the space. But once they're there what good are they if I can't find them, organize them, share them?
Synology Photos (what I use) does all of that. The problem is for search and face match it's nowhere near as good as Google and for sharing, I'd have to ask people to install a new app and set up an account, but they all already have Google accounts
This is truly great news! I recently migrated my email and calendar from Google to Proton but decided that Drive is useless for me without photo backup on mobile. Linux client with sync is also extremely important but AFAIK Proton Drive is supported by Celeste so this might be a viable workaround (though I didn't test it yet).
I also want to point out that during the short period of time when I'm using Proton Mail and Calendar, they already received a few new features. If they can keep up with this pace of development then I'm honestly fine with paying for incomplete services just to support them.
I really hope Proton will become a one stop shop for secure online services. Fingers crossed!
Can you elaborate on "third party?" To me, that means not the system app, but a user installed one. I've used my system camera (app.grapheneos.camera) and one not originally part of my OS (user app) that I've installed from the Play Store (com.google.android.GoogleCamera) and they both backed up automatically.
How do I set my camera to always post pictures taken in "DCIM/Camera/" ?
My built in camera app saves it to a different folder name 🙃
Edit : My camera app doesn't seem to let me choose the download path, what now...
