I paid for no-ads Reddit back in the day but when I tried to transfer purchases nothing happened. Is this intentional? $30 seems steep for no ads but I'm a cheap bastard.
Sorry to ask a question that's probably been asked before, couldn't find an answer.
If you use dns.adguard.com for your DNS, I believe that blocks Sync's ads. At least, it did for the one day I used Sync for Lemmy before paying for no ads for life (to support the developer).
Sync is an app developed by one independent developer and he enters ad onto the free version of the app to pay for his bills. If you browse using any open source apps or browser you won't see any ads.
I bought sync for lemmy premium on my phone and the restore purchases on my tablet does not see this purchase. It shows ads. I won't be renewing if i have to pay for each device separately.
Hate to be that guy, but I cannot comprehend why anybody would pay THIRTY DOLLARS for an app tp use an already FOSS, federated, ad-free service lol Why not just use any of the other two dozen Lemmy apps
You make a fair point - there are plenty of free apps for Lemmy with no ads or purchases at all. For me personally, I use Sync (and paid for no ads) because I used it for years on Reddit and struggled to find a Lemmy app that worked/looked exactly how I wanted.
The price is on the high end, imo, but I don't consider it unreasonable given that I would've wanted to donate to the creator of whatever app I settled in anyway in order to support their work. The only difference to me is that this was a one-time upfront payment rather than a monthly donation on Patreon.
$30 is way more than I want to spend to remove ads, but sync provides a customizable and visually appealing interface to access the website. It takes time and effort to make and I understand why the developer wants to monetize their app.
I spent whatever it cost to remove ads from the Reddit version and felt like it was money well spent.
I think this is the thing to remember, right here:
We don't mind paying because we want to support the dev, so he can continue to make Sync for Lemmy as awesome for Lemmy as Sync for Reddit was. (And let's not forget that it started out awesome enough to bring a lot of users to Lemmy as soon as it was released)
I've heard/read a lot of FOSS-or-die people donate to their favorite devs or apps or projects, so why is it so hard to believe that some of us are okay with donating to this? I paid to get rid of ads in Sync before I ever saw a single one - because I wanted to support LJ. Dude has done awesome work.
