If Canada joins the EU, Canadian representatives to the European Parliament would need to be elected via proportional representation, it's part of the requirements.
There is no uniform voting system for the election of [Members of the European Parliament]; rather, each member state is free to choose its own system, subject to certain restrictions:
I updated the title of the post to better clarify that this would only apply to Canadian MEPs.
I think that if it comes down to a referendum (not that referendums are necessary anyway), I think a Canadian referendum on EU membership would be more likely to gain majority support than for proportional representation. The reason being is that membership into the EU is easier to understand than proportional representation.
Given the current political climate (the American trade war against Canada), Canadians would be much more receptive to joining the EU.
I feel like if we did end up joining the EU, just seeing how proportional representation functions would help people with onboarding that as a better voting system.
I really hope EU membership gains traction, I think it would be a huge benefit in so many ways. Freedom of movement alone would be a game changer for things like our healthcare system. Enabling EU citizens to more easily move to Canada and bolster our various industries would be exactly what we need, with the additional markets that would open up, to kick our economy into high gear.
Fuck America, we've been really good to them and all that did was paint a fucking target on us...
Yes, even the UK had to accept this when they were in the EU. But unfortunately it wasn't very proportional, due to the small districts. Plus no one paid attention to EU elections, so it didn't have much impact on politics (e.g. it didn't help win any arguments about changing voting systems).
I live in the UK. And I always like to say the the US took all the really shitty bits of being British and amplified them. Brits are almost exactly halfway between being American and Canadian. Generally nice and polite, also really stubborn and resistant to change for the better, often very willing to believe a con-artist and cut off their nose to spite their face.
I love living here, and probably won't move back, but fuck me....some times.... smfh
