What's wild to me is how most news sources are reporting that the president's rivals did their part by opting not to provide support to the coup attempt.
I think, if a bunch of armed rednecks attacked the White House, we wouldn't see solidarity among rival factions in defending our seat of government.
Huh. I was wondering why I read about it once and then completely forgot about it. I actually have no idea if this was a good thing or a bad thing tbh so I don't have an opinion
To remove all of the nuance: The democratically elected president survived an attempted overthrow from the military. He did so by:
Replacing three military branch leaders who then ordered the military personnel to return to their barracks and stations.
Reaching out to the citizens, who reacted quickly and without any signs of weakness to form mobs who surrounded and shouted at troops belonging to the coup.
The timeline was something like: Coup begins quietly, Coup leader Zuniga claimed to be "trying to restore democracy" at 2:47 AM, and Zuniga was arrested at 5:08 AM for the crime.
I thought Zuniga was a part of the white supremacy faction in Bollivia but I'm not finding any connections with a search engine. Looks like Juan Jose Zuniga was accused of embezzling ~400,000 USD worth of public funds and was part of a group, Pachajchos, who watched over coca production and monitored politics. Morales accused the group of trying to assassinate him.
On the flip side, Morales was and may still be seeking a 4th or 5th term as president, he was ousted in 2019 and replaced by democratically elected Arce. So being opposed to Morales doesn't seem like a bad thing on its own. Zuniga claims that a group of elites were destroying the nature and taking everything for themselves.
My best educated guess is that Zuniga is an opportunist who saw a fractured federal entity and wanted to wedge himself in the gap as its new leader, no matter how many lives he would need to throw on the fire in order to do so.
Jesus christ, what a stupid take lol. Just recently they tried to put Guaido in charge in Venezuela (who had support from Colombian paramilitary groups too). And let's not forget how they took Evo down in Bolivia a few years ago over voting fraud allegations, which later turned out to be just statistical analysis mistakes. And they put that awful woman in charge who commited at least 2 massacres against protesters after taking power. And they are backing Milei and Bukele in Argentina and Salvador. And they are punishing Colombia financially for daring to pick Petro as president. And ...
Don't get me wrong, fuck Evo and Maduro for trying to stay in power forever. And Maduro for sure is a left wing dictator. But go fuck yourself with that propaganda, the USA can't stop fucking with us latin americans. Educate yourself before talking.
Not everything that goes wrong in your part of the world is because la CIA. Educate yourself before voting and stop trying to blame your shortsightedness and corruption on everyone else.
If you want to be taken seriously and have a fruitful discussion, don't start with "what a stupid take lol". Start with something respectful, anything, I'm sure you can come up with it yourself.
100% of its weapons are in transit to Israel according Joe
it takes decades to get people to elect a government more aligned with its people than with say Lockheed Martin, and thus
Bolivia has to succeed in suppressing coups 100% of the time whereas
the US CIA has to succeed just once
SORRY folks. In the middle of the night I tried to make some sarcasm about the US’s intolerance of non-right-wing governments in the Americas and how many times the CIA has been proven to have helped topple non-right-wing governments. Mea culpa.
