This layout was made for speed
This was an actual typing test using the QAZ keys over on the right side which is less horrible than I imagined it would be. I probably got lucky, though, because there weren't many Q's or Z's in my test.

Bent switch contacts [solved]
Edit: thanks everyone, I’ve installed them and everything is fine!
---
Hey community!
I got some switches with bent contacts. I can easily bend them back into shape, but I’m afraid of them possibly snapping off inside the keyboard and running it. Am I overthinking it?
The backstory is I’be got a 3x 10 unit Outemu switch bags in the mail from AliExpress to try different varieties. They were not packed well so some of them came with bent contacts. So I’m also gauging whether buying a full set would be worth it.

Are there any macro pads that can be programmed via a text file stored onboard?
I am wanting a macro pad for work, but we are not allowed to install software on them and even the websites we have access to is limited. I don't want to have to use my personal computer or take the pad home whenever I want to make a more complex macro and am wondering if there are any where the keys can be configured using a configuration file stored onboard?

When you require more 'mechanical' in your keebler
... someone linked this in a Discord server and it's just too horrible not to repost.
Would have turned the switches the other way around tho.

Hand wired a southpaw 1800(-ish) keyboard with no stabilizers
Time+3D printer+laser engraver=keeb
I had these cheap clone keycaps lying around, and I've been wanting to try a southpaw, as well as a no-stabs board that can accommodate sculpted keycap profiles, so here we are. Had to make a few compromises on layout to fit the keycaps I had on hand, but it's feeling pretty usable so far. Outemu dustproof green for MOAR CLICKY.

Macro pad suggestions
I rock a 60% which I love, but I’m learning blender and coding, lack of numpad has gotten frustrating.
Anyone got any macro pad suggestions either available now or in GB/IC?
Preferably a hot swap! Open to different sizes and formats. Was tempted by the Piketea standing desk mounted macro pad, but they appear to be sold out.

Feker Alice 80 PCB curved?
Does anyone have a Feker Alice 80 and modded it? I am asking, because from the pictures it looks like the tenting angle decreases from the middle to the outside of the keeb. Technically, it seems to be a split keeb with two PCB. Judging from the few views on the PCBs I found, these are straight. Anything else would surprised me. Many custom made keebs with strong curvature have small PCBs per key. Even a Microsoft ergonomic keyboard I could look inside, has multiple small PCBs. Still the Feker looks curved to me. So my question is: Is it curved and if yes, how did they do it?

Envious of thumb clusters? Have a gap in your matrix? Why not spend an inordinate amount of time extending your keyboard?
cross-posted from: https://feddit.uk/post/12276336
> Sorry for the crap photos - I just wanted to share these extra keys I added to my Lily58. > > I noticed there was a gap in the matrix so I tacked a spare hot-swap socket to the pads on the back of the PCB. That worked with minimal modification to my QMK set-up. I couldn't really use it dangling off some wires so I set out to make an extension that would slot in and be retained by one of the standoffs. I don't have a laser cutter or 3D printer so I just hacked these out of a sheet of ABS plastic following a printed template and glued them up. They're nice and solid and line up really well, despite being rather rough around some of the edges. > > I'm finding the 1.5U keys a bit confusing at the moment, swapping them out for 1U keys makes it a bit easier to home my thumbs. These are certainly much easier to access than the outermost keys on the lower row or the keys below the display. I'm thinking they need to be called Lily Pads. > > ! > !

KVM switch - Any recommendations?
2PCs with a single keyboard, mouse, I wish there's something that works, I want to control 2 PC's with one keyboard, no need to switch monitors I have a dedicated monitor for each PC (Windows 10, 11).
Any recommendations? I've already tried these options:
----------------------------
-
Bluetooth/Dongle
All of them have a rare error called "ghost/sticky keys" and is not a mechanical error, because when connected through USB it stops happening, the only keyboard that didn't do that was the Logitech MX KEYS S but rubber-dome KB 😔 and I really don't like it specially their bottom keys, I know that there is a Logitech MX MECHANICAL does anyone know how fast is while switching from Bluetooth devices?
-
MVK Switches/HUBs
Same "sticky keys" and it takes more than 2 seconds to switch between devices
I don't like the idea of them sharing the devices through the same network LAN/VPN it defeats my purpose of using 2 PC's it may work for people with two OS, but not for me, I want to use 2 different networks on each PC so they won't able to see each other
-
Build one
I even tried making my own one by soldering 2 USB cables into a single keyboard with a switch to control to which PC should the data be send while typing the keys... but you needed a controller actively connected to the windows devices so... it didn't work as planned
---------- new update ----------
I do NOT need/want a display port or any video switch (I use 2 monitors, one for each pc)

[SOLVED] I'm cheap and want a Linux keyboard
Thank you everyone for taking time to help out. While looking for keyboards, I’ve found a great deal on a new Keychron C3 Pro at Amazon for around $30. It’s a wired keyboard, but it’s got hot swappable brown switches and I figured there’s no way I’d find something better to dip my toes in this hobby.
And I’m really glad I did! The feel and sound of it is just so much better from my regular keyboard it’s not even funny.
I’ve got some sample switches and o-rings in the mail to further dampen the sound but I’m very happy with my purchase.
Original text below:
---
All those really sweet compact keyboards are super sexy and I want one. But the ones I like are both:
- very expensive
- have windows exclusive software
I’m not even sure mechanical keyboards are for me, to be honest. I don’t type that much, and the keyboard I have - a Logitech wave ergonomic keyboard - suits me, except for the humongous size and the noise (I do a lot of video calls and it gets distracting to my interlocutors).
From my research, a QMK/VIA 65% keyboard would be ideal. The VIA part would allow me to configure the few extra keys and layouts so I can make the most of the keys I’ll have. And it’s Linux compatible. However, it seems the controllers for VIA keyboards make them significantly more expensive. Then there’s the noise issue. The click clack, while tactile satisfying, is a no go for me.
I went down the rabbit hole and to find something that has a chance of suiting me, the cost quickly balloons above $200, and for something which I don’t know if I’ll like. If at least I knew it wouldn’t be too loud I might justify forking that kind of money.
Is there a keyboard for me? How can I tell if it’s going to be too loud? Or should I just give up that search and go for a normie tenkeyless keyboard?

Anyone know of any keyboards bodies similar to this one?
Hey everyone,
I'm looking for a keyboard kit with a translucent body similar to this one. It's the KBDTIGER LITE KEYBOARD KIT which has been discontinued. I've been in the group buy for a while, but I've also been searching every so often for anything similar available. I'd be cool with a pre-built that I could modify too. I'm more so concerned with the appearance. I like the N64 controller vibe.
Thanks!

Threw together a Pixelfed post with all my hand-wired keyboard builds.
pixelfed.social wjrii (@[email protected])My KMK hand-wire builds. 1. "Plank+3" 50 key ortholinear. 2. Macropad from Thingiverse. 3. "Staggerwing" 56 key fixed-wire split ortho. 4. "RetroH" retro-inspired TKL-like, build 1/3. 5. RetroH build 2/3. 6. "N3 v1", No stabilizers, navigation arrows, Numpad. 7. RetroH build 3/3 8. "N3 v2" revised ...
9 builds over the past year, from a 12-key macropad that spits out all the swear words and nonsense an overindulged and nerdy 10 year old can come up with, to a no-stabilizers, 102-key rethinking of the 96%. A couple of them have custom DIY keycap legends.
I'm no Joe Scotto, but what I lack in talent I make up in a stupidly high tolerance for large amounts of hand-wire soldering. I've been high on my own supply almost exclusively for the past 4-5 months.

OLKB Planck rev7 RGB driver name?
@mechanicalkeyboards OLKB Planck rev7 RGB driver name?
Hi everyone,
I've got an OLKB rev7 keyboard on drop.com and I've finally got to make it work, but I'd like to configure the integrated RGB lighting and to do this, I need the driver name.
The QMK page lists many drivers, but a quick lookup on Google didn't return me anything, besides an unanswered question on the drop.com page.
If one of you knew the RGB lighting driver name for the OLKB Planck rev7, that would let me program my keyboard.
Thank you very much.
PS : please mention me while replying to this post or your messages won't show up in my mentions. I'll keep an eye on the thread and try to answer to everyone, but it won't scale well.

Help with VIA macros?
I just got a cidooo v21 numpad, and was very excited to use macros for OBS.
I have been using alt-z for tap-to-talk in obs, and i set up layer 3 to be obs macros. I want "enter" to be tap to talk ie alt-z. When i press the enter key and keep it held, it only registers as a short tap. I even made sure the macro is set for keydown on both keys.
Whats the simplest way to have the macro report as held for the duration of me holding the enter key?
Edit: potential alternate solution: whats the best way to have different macros for the press and release of the enter key? That way i could simply unmute on press and mute on release

Keyboard Recommendation?
My havit KB395L died. It was cheapish, but great for me. I should have bought 3, because they don't make it anymore.
I bought a Red Dragon Horus (k618rgp-pro) with red switches as a replacement. The form factor is fine, and I like the wireless, but the keys feel mushy and I make typos constantly.
So, now I'm looking for something with:
- Low Profile
- Blue switches
- Tactile (feel the bump on a key press)
- Full size (I guess I could go ten keyless)
- Backlight Bonus features:
- Wireless
- Hot swappable switches
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
-
[UPDATE] Could use some recommendations for a (usually) quick typist.
At home I have a Das Keyboard with Cherry MX browns and they feel great. I think this is the quickest I've been able to type on any keyboard.
I type a lot for my new job and no one cares if I bring in my own keyboard but for my coworkers sake, I don't think I want to bring in browns. I'm a heavy typer and frankly I'm loud on browns.
I searched for quieter keys and found Cherry MX Red Silents (Durgod keyboard) but after typing on it a few days at work, I'm making way more mistakes, I'm typing slower, and my hands are more fatigued. That's when I learned about linear vs tactile... I think tactile is what I need.
So with that, I'm looking for:
Need:
- Tactile
- Light switches (should not take much force to activate? idk. Browns are good for me, for reference)
- Quiet
- 100% layout
Want:
- Switches I can put the Draula keycaps on that my friend bought me. I just know they fit fine on Cherry MX Browns and Red Silent.
- USB-C port. I have a coiled cable I want to use already.
Nice to have:
- Hot swappable PCB
Open to other info I'm not thinking about.
Edit: After looking around some more this evening, I'm leaning toward grabbing a Keychron K10 Pro, grabbing some Zilents V2's and sticking those in there, then popping on the caps I have. This would be the most building I've done for a keyboard. See any issues with that?
Update
Based on the recommendations here and some other threads I read, I went with a Keychron Q6 Max and the Zilent V2's.
I confirmed that my poor speed and accuracy on the (previous) new board I had gotten was definitely due to my not being used to linears. After a day of using the new Keychron with Zilents I did a typing test and got a new PB.
Thanks for all the suggestions! Now I'm in trouble because I want to replace my home keyboard with the same...

The 8bitdo keyboard has been pretty well-received as a \~$100 wireless keyboard with ABS keycaps. I love the way this C64 color scheme looks.
I have an 8bitdo arcade stick, which looks like it uses the same knob as this keyboard for selecting the wireless mode. I love the way it feels every time I turn it on.
Unfortunately, the keyboard doesn't use QMK -- it uses their own mapping software, which is Windows only. This makes it a non-starter for me, since I rarely use a Windows computer these days. But I just might have to copy that color scheme for my next build.

Presoldered split keyboard
Hi everyone! I'm planning on getting a split keyboard to replace my planck, but I don't have a soldering iron.
What are my options ? Ideally I want:
- DIY, no soldering involved
- QMK firmware
- 40% format
The keyboard I'm leaning toward is the let's split as it's a planck split in two halves, but it seems that you need to at least solder the keycaps yourself, which I can't.

Macros on the Newmen GM610
I just got the above keyb and am wondering if there is a way to add macros or reassigns to the FN layer? I only seem to be able to add a macro to the top layer.
For example run macro when I press FN+t but it will only let me set a macro on ‘t’.

GMMK Tenkeyless Gateron Brown - Customise RGB
Hello everyone!
I just got my GMMK Tenkeyless keyboard, which is the first one I own with RGB. I would love to be able to customise the RGB, but being brand new to it I'm a bit lost.
A little preface: I am on Linux. I think this is important later on when I mention Via.
So to start, I looked on the supported keyboards page on the qmk website, and couldn't find my keyboard by searching for GMMK. Furthermore, if I go to the Glorious Gaming site I can't find any other keyboards other than what appear to be their current flagship ones (hence I can't find any specific board information or anything like that). One thing i did find is the software for the GMMK 1 TKL from here, but it is an .exe and hence I can't use it. I did think of running it through wine, but given that there will be firmware flashing involved I'd rather not risk going through a compatibility layer or messing anything up.
I also tried the Via webapp, but when I try to
Authorize device
I get a browser popup in my permissions section which states that there are no compatible devices found. I'm unsure if this is because it is not supported by Via or if its because it can't detect it because I am on Linux.I also went through the qmk configurator but unsurprisingly my specific model was not in the list seeing as I couldn't find it in the supported keyboards list I mentioned earlier.
So finally for my question: Is there any way I can configure the RGB on my keyboard without having to find a windows machine and using the GMMK 1 software?
Many thanks in advance!

Material to fill translucent capslock hole
Made my gf a keyboard for her birthday and she's enjoying it, but is missing light up indicator when caps lock is on. I know this key sucks and I disabled it on mine but she uses it a lot for her job.
The keyset I got her is completely opaque so you can't really see the caps light unless you're right above the keyboard looking at the edges of the caps key.
I took some spare keys of the same shape and drilled holes right above the indicator light and it shines through pretty well, but want to fill it with something clear to make it look nicer/diffract the light a bit. Does anyone have any recommendations? Was thinking about using polyurethane caused I've used it for random other things and seems like it could work.
Thanks!
