People overestimate the percentage of immigrants in their country
  • Yep, that's true, the latest census was from 2021, and the figure was 3.69%.

Probably the figures weren't available to Ipsos at the time, despite the publishing date :/? Idk..

  • People overestimate the percentage of immigrants in their country
  • Alternative view (directly from the source):

IMO being off by around 10% or more is still quite the leap.

Also unsurprising where the sentiment is coming from: !

What's an obsolete or incredibly obscure word you think people should know?
  • Serendipity, idk it sounds cool, "serendipitous" moments happen a lot irl (e.g. forgetting to bring ur wallet with u to the supermarket but minutes later, you end up finding a coin in a random pocket from your jacket to unlock a shopping cart), but it almost only sees its use in fiction, like.....

  • Looking for an Android app that serves as both a vault and a PDF reader

Hello there, are there any FOSS Android apps out there that serve as both a reader and a vault for PDFs? I want to be able to encrypt the PDF files and decrypt+read them with a single vault password.

I could just encrypt PDF files separately using the same password, but it's not really that convenient having to go through several PDFs tbh.

I want to store the PDFs on the storage of my phone.

UPDATE: Safe Space is exactly what I needed, ty @[email protected], will provide a review of the app later

Frustrated Polish white supremacists group up to march through streets for a "citizen patrol", more marches planned.
  • same (In addition, I'm a foreigner). It was already bad, but it sure as hell is getting worse by the day. They also feel entitled to move around the world freely but at the same time talk about how immigrants are problematic, not "integrating into our culture properly" and chant shit like "Polska dla Polaków".

Frustrated Polish white supremacists group up to march through streets for a "citizen patrol", more marches planned.

This comes as a result of a scuffle between South Americans and Poles, with two ending up hospitalized in Śrem. Followed by this, stupid questions like "Have open borders brought gang violence to Poland all the way from South America?" (Blood) are seriously being asked and discussed.

Pictures of the situation's aftermath: Atak ostrym przedmiotem na śremskiej plaży. Są poważnie ranni [AKTUALIZACJA] (CW: Blood, albeit censored)

Latest statement the Śrem Police, Google Translated:

    > Yesterday, September 7, just after At 11 p.m., the Śrem Police officer on duty was notified about a fight that took place on the beach at Lake Grzymisławskie in Śrem. Police investigations into this matter were and are currently ongoing throughout the night. The police are explaining the situation and determining the course of the event in which several people took part. Two men, residents of Śrem, were taken to hospital with injuries. The police detained four men as suspects of involvement in the fight. One of these men is an Argentine national and three are Colombian nationals. They were all taken to police custody. Today, at 09.40, policemen from the Śrem Implementation Group detained a fifth man as a person suspected of participating in a fight. He is also a Colombian citizen. This man was also taken into police custody , said the deputy inspector in the morning. Kasińska.

To no one's surprise, this is a clear-cut scapegoating of all immigrants for the actions of a few, looking for any excuse to wage racist, xenophobic actions on less than 3.69% of the population of Poland.

Source: Size and demographic-social structure in the light of the 2021 Census results, page 114-115 !

Nationalities outside of Europe are so small, they are all relegated to the "other" row on the census .-. !

Proponents of these lynch mobs will say that the data above may be a bit outdated, since there's been a bump-up on the non-Poles population (as if it justifies the proliferation of these mobs), but will omit the fact that after 2021, most of them come from Ukraine.. So that still doesn't change much of anything.

The patrol will supposedly be followed by police monitoring, as if that'd make it any better.

The GeoGuessr World Cup Is the Entertainment I Didn't Know I Needed This Week
  • Good find, I had assumed people around here would at least have uBlock Origin with at least one Annoyances filter on (or similar), this is possible via Firefox mobile as well. I didn't get the prompt as well on desktop, probably because of the Annoyances filter that blocks the consent prompts anyway.

Here's an archived link, not sure if that helps: https://archive.is/qHSPD

How China’s first AAA game Wukong Became One of the Fastest Selling Games in History
  • I'm not sure I'm understanding this correctly, the prerequisite for a video game to be a "runaway success" is to do well sales-wise in the west? Why is the source of sales that important when the article mainly praises and discusses the game's launch figures, behind-the-scenes, the studio's lore, etc.... like any other video game articles do? The author isn't suggesting the sales are doing well in the west, so what warrants discussion of the games' sales in the west in the first place?

The article's headline alone says it's "One of the Fastest Selling Games In History". If we take the revenue value in the article to be true ($852 million in revenue in 2 weeks), then it beats Elden Ring by around a $100 million, give or take, in the first 2-week period (I'm assuming each copy costed 59.99$, so 12 million copies roughly translates to $720 million in revenue, since actual figures were never revealed, I think).

The article also states that it sold 10 million units in the first week, oh wait actually, that's 10 million in 3 days, beating other games that took at least a month to reach a similar milestone.

Measures to take when buying a used phone?

Hello, I bought my first used phone (Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro) and was wondering what are the best practices taken before using it. I've read the reviews of the merchant selling the phone, looked into ratings and asked some questions about the condition of the phone, so I'm sure of my purchase on that end.

What about after receiving the phone? I know I would run a factory reset, aside from that, is there anything else to do?

FOSS RTX Voice, one that doesn't require expensive hardware + libre licensed dataset

I know that the standalone RTX Voice application allows GTX cards to be used, but bear in mind it's only for GTX and RTX graphics cards. What about AMD graphics users? What of those that don't have RTX 5 Billion or AMD RX 8 Billion?

The second thing that would be addressed in a hypothetical FOSS alternative would be the dataset the AI relies on. While it may not be useful for end-users, for developers this could be used for their respective projects, or maybe even a fork?

Or maybe users could contribute to the dataset by recording random potentially unwanted noise? Idk, the possibilities may be considerable.

There is this project though to be honest it's too much to take in at once for the uninitiated and time-constrained like me. What RTX Voice does right is it is simply one software and one separate virtual driver. Set the microphone you'd like to be suppressed and set RTX Voice as default. It's almost Plug n Play in a way.
