Spectra is a PeerTube instance dedicated to supporting original content creators, and building the video community within the fediverse!
Great idea, but unfortunately technicalities won't get me marks.
Oh, I haven't handed it in yet. We were supposed to write our own methods.
You guys just need time, I think. I'll probably be a proud Mojeek user in the future, but for now I need something a bit different. That said, I have found Mojeek to be excellent for finding smaller blogs and articles that I wouldn't otherwise have read, so it's still pretty useful even if I don't use it as my main engine.
"I asked for extra ranch; not a freaking McCumshot!"
I cover my webcams, I have almost entirely de-Googled (since they've been attacking Invidious, I've had to resort to watching the videos on YT if they aren't on PeerTube or Floatplane or whatever), I use Linux and BSD, I am planning to switch to GrapheneOS at some point, and I try to avoid software and services from countries with problematic governments (e.g. China, Russia, USA). I am also using local software, with data sychronised via SyncThing (currently just my notes and passwords, but the list is growing).
I also use Mullvad Browser when available, and either Brave or Epiphany when it isn't.
I am still on the lookout for a decent search engine, though, as all of the ones I've used are either not as private as I thought (e.g. Ecosia, Qwant), or are broken (e.g. LibreY), or did something I disagreed with (e.g. DuckDuckGo, Brave Search), or are hostile towards VPN/Tor users (e.g. Startpage), or didn't have good enough indexes (e.g. Mojeek), or became unavailable to me (e.g. Peekier, MetaGer).
Why can't we have anything nice?
I thought it best to just let people enjoy the cute birds.
If I have to use sudo, it's wrong.
That is a house sparrow, I think (I'm not a twitcher or anything, though). Despite their size, they are thugs.

KDE spotted in Dexter!
Spotted in episode 108 ("Shrink Wrap"). I think it's KDE 2, judging by the icon. I don't recognise any of the software, though.
Unfortunately, this particular laptop was owned by Dr. Meridian, a manipulative psychiatrist who caused the suicides of a number of women in his care. Fortunately, Dexter deals with him good and proper...

Man, you're making some great art! I really ought to break out GIMP again at some point...
I mean, don't knock it 'til you've tried it...
I swear, if I hear about another openly queer (and also non-TERF) person opposing DIY HRT in the current sociopolitical climate, I am going to owe my landlord for minor property damages.
i.e. I am going to bang my head against a wall until I break through to the other side.
Only just. This week has just been one cataclysm after another.

What ThinkPad for daily use?
Hey, Lemmy. I've recently broken my ten-year-old MacBook in a mishap involving some ionic cleaning fluids, and I am looking to replace it with a ThinkPad.
I am currently at uni, studying cybersecurity, and this particular course also has a lot of software development at the start. I also would be looking to play some videogames (nothing too taxing though; really just Minecraft, Terraria, Stardew Valley, etc.; assuming I don't go for FreeBSD instead of Linux), watch some videos, and do a bit of video editing.
The device being replaced was a mid-2014 MacBookPro11,1 A1502. Compared to my other hardware, though, this is a powerhouse.
I have already looked at a few models (namely the T450 and the X1 Carbon Gen. 10), but these have always had a snag or two that are a deal breaker.
Of course, I will be running either Linux, BSD, or some other *nix.
In terms of specs, I would be needing:
- At least 8GB of RAM (or upgradable to/past)
- A CPU equal or better than the i5 in the Mac
- At least 256GB of storage (SSD preferable, but not essential)
- 1400x900 resolution or higher
- WiFi drivers available for BSD
- Decent battery life
- Screen must be less than 17", or it won't fit in my bag
- Ideally no more than five years old; although an older ThinkPad could be doable
- Either AMD-based or made after 2018 (to prevent Meltdown attacks, should I decide to run Linux-libre or something else without microcode updates)
Unless a device is ridiculously expensive, the cost shouldn't be a problem. Also, I live in the UK.
So, any suggestions?
