Changes paths as listed in kf5-config, deprecated configs?
Hey all, not sure how I managed this, but over the years I somehow managed to configure different paths which are listed in kf5-config. The for instance the cache path should be /home/matt/.cache, but kf5-config lists it in /mnt/data/matt/home/.cache. I'm sure this was intentional at one point but now i'm trying to fix up my partitions.
So my question is - how do I change the paths listed in kf5-config to where it should be on the root partition (/home/matt/...)?. I'll move the actual data from where it is onto the root partition, I just need to know how to change that paths are configured in kf5-config.
Cheers
kf5-config paths:
cache: /mnt/data/matt/home/.cache/ config: /mnt/data/matt/home/.config/:/mnt/data/matt/home/.config/kdedefaults/:/etc/xdg/ data: /mnt/data/matt/home/.local/share/:/usr/share/:/usr/local/share/ emoticons: /mnt/data/matt/home/.local/share/emoticons/:/usr/share/emoticons/ exe: /usr/lib/libexec/:/usr/bin/ html: /mnt/data/matt/home/.local/share/doc/HTML/:/usr/share/doc/HTML/
etc.. etc..Edit: I just wanted to add that these paths are different from what is listed in qtpaths:
$ qtpaths --paths CacheLocation /home/matt/.cache/<APPNAME> $ qtpaths --paths ConfigLocation /home/matt/.config:/home/matt/.config/kdedefaults:/etc/xdg

You can contribute to KDE with non-C++ code
rabbitictranslator.com You can contribute to KDE with non-C++ code :: rabbiticTranslatorNot everything made by KDE uses C++. This is probably obvious to some people, but it’s worth mentioning nevertheless. And I don’t mean this as just “well duh, KDE uses QtQuick which is written with C++ and QML”. I also don’t mean this as “well duh, Qt has a lot of...
I always see:
- people being told they can contribute to KDE with C++/QML
- people being told they can contribute to KDE without code
But I don't often see:
- people being told that they can contribute to KDE with code that is not C++
I like C++, QML, and even CMake, but you might not be interested in them or you might just not be willing to spend time learning another language, and that's perfectly fine.
In this blog post I list a few KDE projects that you might not know about that might be written in your preferred language or in a specialized format you have expertise or interest in.
By far, the most popular programming language actively used in KDE other than the expected languages is Python.
We also have stuff that would interest sysadmins (containers), packagers (snap/flatpak) and web developers.

Out of curiosity, what do people here use the activities for?
So Plasma has Activities, which is something I noticed a while back. I haven't really found any use for it other than maybe having a different desktop layout so I was wondering what everyone else used it for.
No shade to the people who added it, just curious.

Desktop changes size
Hello, First post! Having a minor issue but not sure it's worthy of a bug report yet (or rather, whose bug it is). Note: the blacked out icons in the screenshot are not part of the problem - they just contained personal info, so censored them out manually.
At least a couple times a day, when I click on my desktop, it resizes itself, leaving a large black region around it, and cutting off icons. I've only seen one other similar report, but it was just on Reddit with no solution found. When it happens, I have to change my resolution to something else and back.
I'm kinda stuck on Debian Testing for now (bookworm generation), but I can bump specific packages to Sid or external repo, if someone knows what I need.
Otherwise, is there any other known fix? I can't help but think this may be another Wayland issue (I've had several and they're usually weird...see my dual monitor setup below for an example).
Other system details:
Software:
- Plasma 5.27.11
- Frameworks 5.115.0
- Qt 5.15.13
- Kernel 6.9.9
- Wayland
Hardware:
- Ryzen 5950X
- RX 6900 XT
- Dual monitors (3440x1440 & 1920x1080 - I mention because it looks like the desktop gets resized to 1080 and I noticed previously on Cinnamon, the system would get confused as to which monitor was supposed to be primary from time to time, causing weird issues...maybe a clue that it's a Wayland issue. Also, windows struggle to remember their positions on my 2nd monitor, after screen unlock or resolution change)
- 64GB RAM, NVMe SSD, MSI Tomahawk, etc...a decently high-end system from 3-4 years ago.

Does KDE makes file transfers between hard drives slower? My laptop is too slow when copying files to my usb flash drive.
I have two laptops, I'll call them laptop 1 and laptop 2.
Laptop 1 is my gaming laptop, and laptop 2 is a very low-spec one that I use as a jellyfin server. Here's the neofetch result for both of them:
Laptop 1
Laptop 2
The problem
On both of them, I copied a 5GB folder from the laptop to my 3.0 usb flash drive, I used this rsync command on each:
rsync -a --progress folder_path destination_folder_path
| Laptop | Average transfer speed | | -------- | ------- | | Laptop 1 | 9MB/s | | Laptop 2 | 45MB/s |
How is this possible? The Laptop 1 is way superior than laptop 2. The laptop 1 has an nvme SSD while laptop 2 has an old 320GB HDD, yet the transfer speed difference is insane.
Does KDE affect the folder copying somehow? If I copy a file on the same SSD on laptop 1, the speed reaches more than 400MB/s.
What is going on here?

Are we going to do something for this year's Canvas?
There is a Fediverse-wide canvas event at canvas.fediverse.events (currently temporarily down with no ETA). Is the KDE community participating?
I redrew this Kiki icon as pixel art and I can, and probably will, place this image myself, as it's just 282 non-white pixels; I just want to know if anyone is going to draw the KDE logo, Konqi or other imagery so we can all be in one area.
1:1 image that can be used as a template: !
If you have any KDE art you'd like to add, including better versions of Kiki, feel free to post them! I can adjust the palette into this year's 34-color one or even redraw high-res images as pixel art for you.

Why doesn't KDE's device auto mount just edit the /etc/fstab file?
Every time I tried to enable the device auto mount on my second hard drive, it never worked. I always had to manually mount it through KDE's GUI whenever I wanted to access it's content.
I later researched and found out that I could edit the /etc/fstab file with my second hard drive's UUID, which caused it to always mount on startup as I wanted.
So my question is, why doesn't KDE auto mount also replicate this process of editing the /etc/fstab?
The KDE auto mount never worked on plasma 6, I believe it's something related to wayland (even though I don't understand how they could be related).

Is it possible to configure a system-wide KDE Plasma wallpaper?
Is it possible to configure a system-wide KDE Plasma wallpaper?
With GNOME you can easily do this by creating a keyfile: https://help.gnome.org/admin/system-admin-guide/stable/dconf-keyfiles.html.en
Is there something similar in KDE? I've looked at the Kiosk documentation, but didn't find anything about setting a system-wide default background (like in an enterprise deployment).

Plasma 6 Laptop Experience
Hello everybody! I was thinking of switching from GNOME to KDE Plasma on my laptop. The main things keeping me from switching are
- Touchpad Gestures
- Dynamic Workspaces
Since I have a pretty beefy machine, dynamic workspaces are more an optional than anything but if there's something unnegotiable to me, especially for a laptop experience, is the touchpad experience which must me at least viable. So what has been your experience? Please I need your opinion

Audio popping/crackling
I've seen some articles talking about some tweaks in Arch with older versions of KDE to prevent audio crackling and snapping, but I cant seem to find the relevant config files or locations, and was hoping someone had current info for KDE 6.1 with this issue. Tried both on board audio with a Realtek chip and a SBZ card, and similar issue happens so I assume I need to change some other setting to disable the system sleeping or some such.
Thank you.

KDE Neon ISO but set up already for development?
I am just a regular Linux user with a bit of additional interest in customizing. I can install things from the store, change settings in the GUI comfortably etc.
Occassionally there are things I am looking for are not available already but could be with few simple tweaks. For eg. right now I am looking for an analog clock widget different from the standard one already available. I need to reduce its size and/or change its background.
I believe this could be done by changing the clock source and building a new clock.
Currently I am not knowledgeable enough to do that and also with insufficient free time to learn everything. I would try if there is a standard pre-built ISO configured to this need with all tools pre-installed.
Is there such an option available?

Icons-and-Text Task Manager with 2+ rows - an alternative layout
First, I'd like to thank everyone involved in KDE for building such a great DE!
One of the features I love about KDE is the ability to have a multiline Icons-and-Text Task Manager. However, I think it could be improved even more. I wanted to share my thoughts and see what others think.
Please consider the attached image. In ① and ② we see what the taskbar looks like when 'Maximum rows' is set to 2. And ③ is a sketch I quickly made to illustrate what I am thinking of. In short:
- I imagine a layout that is more space-efficient and one that doesn't try to look like a grid. Pinned icons don't stretch.
- Instead of 'Maximum rows', we just have a fixed number of rows. And when the opened applications are just a few and they can fit in a single row, I think it would look better if they didn't stretch and take up all the vertical space available, but just take the first row and leave the second one empty.
- If the Digital Clock and the Application Launcher icon could somehow be made smaller, there would be even more free space for other useful stuff and the taskbar would (arguably) look better.
What do you folks think?
