I've often thought LLMs could replace all of the C-suites and upper and middle management.
Funny how no companies push that as a possibility.
Which is just "reduced staffing" in different words. If the kiosks weren't there, they would have hired more workers, built more restaurants, etc.
Except the study specified that the increased sales were related to the presence of the kiosks. They could do point of sale promotions that just weren't reliably done if a person was in between the customer and the computer.
Sounds like our dads could be friends.
I hope you realize how lucky you are to have a grandma who is merely deluded into thinking the MAGAts aren't a threat.
Not really related to the post, but I feel like sharing.
Big boss where I work wanted all managers to read a book. He had staff scour the Internet looking for copies of this book so that they could give every manager their own copy.
He said we were going to have meetings with the entire management team to review chapters of the book one at a time.
The gist of the book was: take the time to make sure you hire the right people for the job, retain the good ones, and get rid of the people who don't work out.
I think we covered two chapters in meetings.
After that, an upcoming hiring freeze was announced, and everyone was told to fill all their open positions within two weeks or the position would be cancelled.
I refer to this as companies wanting to hire the person who just quit.
They're just measuring the increase in the amount of methane in the room when Elon speaks.
DeSantis?
I could be wrong, but I think the AP Style guidelines say that the word "comedian" should be in quotes when referring to a GOP "comedian".
Maybe I am wrong, but they should say that.
I don't have a link handy, but there was a study that showed that fast food businesses didn't reduce staffing when they replaced cashier's with kiosks. Rather, they shifted employment to areas that couldn't be replaced with a kiosk, enabling the staff to meet the increased demand and increased sales that were a result of the kiosks.
If you find out what happened, let me know, because I think it's happening to me too.
I had a professor in college that said when an AI problem is solved, it is no longer AI.
Computers do all sorts of things today that 30 years ago were the stuff of science fiction. Back then many of those things were considered to be in the realm of AI. Now they're just tools we use without thinking about them.
I'm sitting here using gesture typing on my phone to enter these words. The computer is analyzing my motions and predicting what words I want to type based on a statistical likelihood of what comes next from the group of possible words that my gesture could be. This would have been the realm of AI once, but now it's just the keyboard app on my phone.
The solution here, IMO, isn't to increase the minimum wage (that'll end up reducing jobs)
Research has found that increasing minimum wage does not reduce jobs.
Or you could launch him into the sun and burn him up like the trash he is but that would be more expensive
Make him pay for it
Some of the longer lines in Disney World have bathrooms along the line.
I think of it this way:
Imagine Hitler coming to power in Germany and preparing to conquer the world, only instead of starting with a crippled country struggling to survive, he's got the largest military in the world with as much military spending as the next nine countries combined.
Except, the scum who are doing this will still do it because they won't pay the cost.
Many, many years ago, the hospital where I work had a medical transcription company to transcribe dictated radiology results.
At the time, users would access the server via DEC terminals or a terminal application on their computer.
One radiologist set up a script in the terminal application to sign off all his reports with one click. Another radiologist liked it so the first let the second copy it.
Later, the second radiologist opened a ticket with IT because all his reports were being signed by the first radiologist. Yeah, because he didn't update the script to change the username and password being used to sign the reports.
That's an amusing anecdote, but the terror comes from the fact that NEITHER RADIOLOGIST WAS READING THEIR REPORTS. BEFORE SIGNING THEM.
The reason they are supposed to sign the report is to confirm that they reviewed the work of the transcriptionist and verified that the report was correct.
No matter what the tool is, doctors will assume the results are correct and sign off on them without checking.
The rally wasn't for NY.
It feels like he's given up on winning the election and is hoping to win the civil war he wants to start.
Baby kangaroo
I have no idea what a kangaroo has to do with my employer, but they brought in a baby kangaroo for an event, so I waited in line to hold it.
Rose and Daisy are back together!
YouTube Video
We got Rose's test results back on Friday, and she's all better, so Rose and Daisy can be together again!
Edit: this is what things were like every day while they were separated:
https://youtube.com/shorts/SkCAVoe-cbM
Rose is not feeling well
We had to take Rose to the vet on Friday because she stopped eating hay and started having diarrhea.
Diagnosis: intestinal parasite and gas in her stomach.
She's on antiparasitic meds, antibiotics to prevent secondary infection, and a nutritional supplement to replace the hay she isn't eating.
She takes the tiny doses of the meds ok, but she's not a fan of the supplement.
We had a lot of trouble until we figured out how to get her burrito towel wrapped correctly.
She's starting to do better. More normal poops, started nibbling hay, and she stopped fighting the supplement.
Daisy and Rose are inconsolable because we had to separate them until Rose is all better.
The gateway between the pens is closed now and they keep pulling on it like they're trying to pull it open.
How do I reference my Lemmy account outside of Lemmy?
This is probably a stupid question, but if I want to add a line to a PDF telling people to direct any comments to my Lemmy account, how would I specify that?
What are the age ranges for various generic age descriptors, eg, "ancient" "elderly" "old" "young"?
Obviously teenager is 13-19.
"Young adult" would start at 20, but where's the cutoff at the upper end? Similarly, what's the range for "adult", "old", "elderly", " ancient"?
If someone asks for responses from "old men", how do I know if it applies to me?
Cinderella Mosaic in Magic Kingdom Castle
It seemed like every time we visited WDW, there was some event or show taking place in front of Cinderella's Castle, and the interior was closed.
When I visited as a kid, you'd walk through the castle and ooh and aah at the mosaic.
I've wanted to see the mosaic again for years, and it was always closed. I finally got the chance again last time, and I took some pictures.
Theme parks like Disney World have been popular for decades, but are the high ticket prices, long lines, and stress associated with the modern-day experience worth the hassle anymore?
Where has this guy been?
When my wife and I went to Disney World in 1996, we planned nothing in advance. We found ourselves waiting in massive lines for rides and spending hours waiting for tables in restaurants. We realized we screwed up and we had to do better.
That was 27 years ago. Since then, we had kids and raised them to adulthood.
Every trip after that we scheduled reservations in advance. Every morning we wake up, we know what park we are going to. We spend about 20 minutes every day we are there planning that day's activities, and we roll with whatever changes we encounter.
I don't understand how having a plan in place in advance of your vacation somehow makes it more stressful. I've always thought it was easier to not have to wonder what we'll be doing and where we'll be going during our Disney trips.
Are there really people who insist on just showing up with no plan and then blame Disney when they are stressed?
Also, it seems like most of the Disney criticism I see is coming from Fox news in some form or another. Is that just my news feed, or is it an extension of the culture war that the right is trying to foment?
Does Florida's SB 1718 violate the full faith and credit clause of the US Constitution?
Title is my question. It seems like refusing to recognize other state's driver licenses would be blatantly unconstitutional. Is there something I'm missing?

Do you ignore work mail or messages?
I tend to at least look at every work email I receive. Likewise for Teams messages. If I see a notification of a new communication, I tend to check it and see if I need to respond. I don't always respond, but I always look at the message.
In various virtual meetings, I've seen other people's notifications when they share their desktop, and it seems like some people just don't bother even looking at them.
Am I the weird one? Does everyone just ignore messages they receive at work?

What's your favorite restaurant in Disney World?
What's your favorite Disney World Restaurant, and what is it about that restaurant that makes it your favorite?
Without any deep thought, the first one that popped into my mind was Narcoossee's. The food is amazing, and there's a great view of fireworks if you're there in the evening.
When my wife and I went to WDW after she graduated from school (1996, I think?), we stayed on property at the Grand Floridian. It was my first time staying in a Disney resort. We arrived too early to check in, so we went to Narcoossee's for lunch.
The last time we went to WDW (2021), we took our adult children with us, and had a wonderful dinner with everyone together at Narcoossee's.
Disney beats shareholder lawsuit over feud with Florida Governor DeSantis
A Delaware judge ruled that the Walt Disney Co board did not act negligently, dismissing a case brought by shareholder Kenneth Simeone.
Poop eating etiquette
I told Daisy that it's rude to breathe in people's faces while you're eating your own poop. She says she's never heard of such a rule.
Thoughts?
Clicking a post takes me to a different post.
This is happening fairly often. When I click on a post title to open a post, it takes me to a different post. Seems to always be sports scores. I'm not sure if it's always the same post it takes me to. I'll have to try to remember to actually note where it's taking me.
If I go back, it takes me back to where I was, and the post title indicates it has been opened, but if I tap it again, it takes me to the correct post.
It's not quite predictable, and it isn't repeatable.
