But why is it the job of the gay person to talk to the conservative village in "the right way" to justify their existence?
It isn't, but we're talking about arguing with idiots. I had some lengthy response prepared but I scraped that - bottom line is, what is your solution in such scenario then? (I mean the village scenario)
My solution is that you need to show people that they have nothing to fear, basically to bring them down to their senses. That's standard negotiation/diplomacy. It's unfair but that's life, in ideal world we wouldn't need to deal with this. And alternative for me is a tribal war of "us vs. them", where you spark in people "this person is aggresive against me, this person is thus my enemy!" and then any logic or reason goes out of window.
But really, what is your solution?
Fair enough, good quote (btw I'm not from US so my knoledge here is limited). Although I'm not sure what portion I agree/disagree with it, I have to think about it much more.
But I mean, even MLK understood that there's a limit, right? Like he didn't take AK47 and started to murder all the racists he saw but have chosen rather strong but non violent approach and he thought about what he was saying and what "works". And that's all I'm saying, I've never said that you cannot take a strong stance. But if you turn it to 11 and just RAGE!!! then be prepared that you might not achieve anything or even make the situation worse
I fully agree. This applies not only to feminism but in general - if you want to convince people about something, you need to plan your approach, what to say, know what works on people etc. You cannot just rage like crazy because there's a high chance you just create a counter reaction.
F.e. I'd say we can all agree that gay rights are the right thing. But if you come to some conservative village, start shouting at everyone, being super aggresive and rage like a maniac, I'd bet that the only thing you achieve is that you'll be labeled as "that crazy person"
I'm really surprised of the responses to this comment, I find this to be a common sense
I'd like to be calm but since I live in a country neighbouring Ukraine ... yeah, I'm scared
Wait, is "Days of our lives" an actuall TV show? I thought it was a made up thing for Friends!
Good, I agree. And I still argue that the word 'privilege' isn't correct here. We want to call this 'double standard', 'unfairness', 'disadvantage', 'advantage', ... that's up to a debate. But I rest my case that this isn't a 'privilege'
To quote source of all truth - Google first page:
privilege
/ˈprɪv(ɪ)lɪdʒ/
a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group.
"education is a right, not a privilege"
How is that a 'privilege'? I don't know like you but for me the 'privilege' is something above normal, above standard, above majority. A king has a privilege of not paying taxes, everyone must pay them but not him, he has this privilege. A diplomat has a privileges that are above law, like they cannot get fine for speeding. We could say a kid whos parents are billionaires has a (hypothetical) privilige in life where they can get everything they want and family budget isn't affected. That is not normal and only few chosen ones have those privileges.
So back to my question - not being judged by the way you look is not something above normal. That is the standard, that should be a norm. I don't know how we want to call the situation in the post but that's not a privilege. At all. Rant over.
They just called her 'Thursday' where I bought it
RIP. But dying at age of 66, that's metal
Heh, is that Marian Labuda in the picture from movie 'Vesničko má středisková'?
I never thought I'd witness the release of 3.0 in my lifetime
Oh god, you're so fragile. You're literally in second to last sentence of my previous post
Oh no, no, not at all. This comic is perfectly fine and non problematic if you replace 'men' with any huge group of people like 'women', 'gay', 'asians', 'americans' or 'blacks'. Also if you disagree with me then you just proove my point as is shown in the last panel. Case closed!
Umm yeah, no. Do you know how we hate the right because it often turns into oppression, human suffering and killing? Well maybe try to not be that just on the left
People who grew up in Manhattan (or other heavily urbanised area), how did your childhood look like?
Where did you play with your friends? Where did you hang out? How did your day look like? I grew up in a small town in a small country and that's something that I always found mysterious and fascinating.
When I grew up we played soccer, hide and seek, hanging out next to a river. I was always wondering how a childhood in places like Manhattan looks like
FAQ on the join-lemmy.org
I love Lemmy and I try to spread the info about it but almost always I face one issue - people being confused. For me (and probably you) it's hard to understand what's confusing about the way Lemmy works, I mean email works on the same principle and everyone's ok with it. It basically boils down to like 3 questions:
- Why do I need to choose a server?
- What is the server / instance? / Is server a subreddit?
- Is Lemmy the same thing like Reddit?
So my idea: Could we put it as a FAQ on the join-lemmy.org? Feel free to submit best answers to these questions (I try to submit mine later when I have some time). Or come up with other frequent questions you heard

For the age ranges, we make the assumption that all women lived to exactly 73 years old, which is the life expectancy for females at birth in 1960. Therefore, the population in each age range will not be entirely accurate, particularly for 69+, but it nonetheless shows the trends of birth rates and popularity of these names over time. When will you guys make another Fantomas?
I mean seriously, me and my brother are watching it right now on RTVS (Slovak National Television) and we realised that the story arc was never finished, Fantomas was never caught. In the spirit of remakes and reboots it's time I'd say
Slovakia's 1930 and 1940 census is online
I'm sure not many of us here are from Slovakia but just wanted to share.
So this is kind of embarasing but after 4 years of making family tree I found out that 1930 and 1940 census from Slovakia is apparently online. I don't know how I missed it. Nevertheless to say the least, my excitement has been through the roof for like 2 weeks.
Note that 1940s census is "blacked" since it hasn't passed 90 years from its creation. It'll be "un-blacked" in 2030. However you can still see the names which might be also helpful (it was for me).
Note 2: there is an (quite successful) attempt at indexation of the results here:

Note 3: you cannot download the forms because of license. Printing sucks so screenshots are probably the only option
