Fixing post/comment rendering issues in Boost for Lemmy

A user did a test of all the Lemmy apps and frontends, and created a list of issues for each of the apps. The full post is here, which has information on expected behaviour and what is missing:

In particular, here is the section for Boost:

AVIF images fail to render

Pixel 6 Android 14 App version 1.0.12

Works fine through the web interface and some other apps.

Can't download gifs/videos anymore

For a week or so I haven't been able to download videos, neither gifs nor webp (haven't tested other formats yet).

Pressing the download button only grabs one still frame.

If I open it in browser I can download fine. This also worked a couple of weeks ago.

Edit: The video in this post of a cat exploring a tube gets saved like this first frame photo of the lighting through the tube.

Sorting by old crashes the app, and sends to crash again after start

Crash output shows this:

java.lang.NullPointerException: Attempt to invoke virtual method 'boolean java.lang.String.startsWith(java.lang.String)' on a null object reference at com.rubenmayayo.reddit.models.reddit.SubmissionModel.X0(SubmissionModel.java:31) at com.rubenmayayo.reddit.models.reddit.SubmissionModel.t2(SubmissionModel.java:150) at com.rubenmayayo.reddit.models.reddit.SubmissionModel.n2(SubmissionModel.java:242) at com.rubenmayayo.reddit.models.reddit.SubmissionModel.d3(SubmissionModel.java:24) at yb.l.l(PostPaginator.java:11) at yb.l.f(PostPaginator.java:3) at yb.h$a.a(LemmyPaginator.java:17) at retrofit2.e$b$a$a.run(DefaultCallAdapterFactory.java:38) at android.os.Handler.handleCallback(Handler.java:914) at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:100) at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:224) at android.app.ActivityThread.main(ActivityThread.java:7551) at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Native Method) at com.android.internal.os.RuntimeInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run(RuntimeInit.java:539) at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit.main(ZygoteInit.java:995)

Device Name: Redmi Note 8 / Android 10

Instance: lemmy.ml

If you as a user encountered this, you can disable it via turning off the internet and switching the sorting method to something different; then turning on the network again.

Clicking replies from your inbox that lead to a deep comment thread break the context lines

This occurred after clicking a reply I received from the inbox tab and clicking the "1 more reply" button.

!

This doesn't seem to occur with a direct link, but nonetheless this comment can be found at: https://aussie.zone/comment/9118680

Screen recording:

!

NB: Lemmy.world is having ongoing federation delays (and has been for several months). Neither upvotes or replies from lemmy.world are being received by my instance for around 1-2 weeks. I promise I'm not just ignoring any responses

Does anyone else have problems with .mp4 videos?

Boost fails to open .mp4 for me. When I browse "All" there usually is some mp4 content, especially from ... well ... nsfw instances. Theese almost always fail and I see just black screen. Firefox on mobile opens it without a problem and so does Sync For Lemmy. Do you have this issue or is it just me? F.e. can you open this link?

I see this:

I don't know if this is caused by instance or by Boost but as I said, Sync doesn't have this problem. And I like Boost more

Clicking a link to a lemmy community on a card doesn't work

When someone links to a community if you open the post and then follow the link it works fine. If you're browsing with cards and try to follow the link from the card without opening the actual post it attempts to open the link in a browser which fails because the link is not the full URL. It would be nice if clicking the link would take me to that community on that instance, which is what it does when you open the post and click the link

"Show x more replies" while viewing a comment with parent comments hidden displays additional replies with full context markers (see photo)

I couldn't find a great way to describe what I'm seeing. But if you're deep in a comment thread, or viewing a reply to your comment, and have parent comments collapsed, if there are additional comments, choosing to show them adds the number of context indicators (the little lines on the left) that it would have were the parents not hidden.

!Bug

The comment from FlyingSquid was the comment hidden by "show 1 more reply".

Saved feature broken

Hey,

I realised that I am not seeing any new saved posts/comments for feddit.de and a random list of comments I didn't acutally save for my lemmy.world account.

It works fine on the web interfaces.

App version 1.0.12

Comment number doesn't show on collapsed last comment

Until I trigger the collapse mechanism, the last comment in a post doesn't have the number of subcomments when it hides subcomments by default. See the below pictures for an example with a specific post, but I've noticed this on every post I've seen recently.

If I reload by pulling down, it again hides the comment number.

Without the comment number after loading the post: !Without the comment number

After tapping to collapse the comment, comment count shows: !After tapping

Favorited communities don't save on relog

Had some issues with the new version, and followed the recommendation to relog. When back, my favorited communities weren't favorited any more.

View All Comments is being treated as View Context

No difference between clicking both

1

Lemmy posts are semitransparent. I can see posts behind the one I'm currently reading.

This started with the most recent update and happens on all text posts. I can't see behind images or the comments though.

Edit: here's how this post looked after posting

Looking at All, sort by Top is blank

When looking at All and sorting by Top (hour, day, week, etc.) it goes blank when telling it to refresh.

Show Parent and Show Thread settings seem to toggle the opposite setting on when selected.

Under General -> Comments, the options to Show Parent or Show Thread seems to enable the other setting.

When the Show Parents setting is selected, the Show Thread option is actually the one that appears within fly-out that appears when selecting the hamburger menu on comments, and vice versa.

Example: https://imgur.com/a/7NI9p3Q

[POSSIBLE ENHANCEMENT REQUEST] I seem to remember when using Boost for Reddit, that when you clicked on Show Parent and the parent comment was shown, there was the ability to click another ^ that would then display that comment's parent, and you could continue doing that until you reached the top of that comment thread. This would be great to have again.

Users with long lemmy instance names collide with upvote numbers

When scrolling from the comments back up to the post, I get launched half way into the post body

Minor bug, it's a bit jarring when it happens.

It doesn't happen every time, but it's specifically when you scroll past the top comment. It jumps me to the heading for 'section 4' in the post.

https://lemmy.ca/post/15125231

My guess was that it has something to do with the images or the length of the post

The app will sporadically crash and restart when commenting

Not sure what causes it, but about 7% of the times I try to comment on a post, the app will crash and restart, failing to post the comment. Unless the comment was manually saved, the comment will also be completely gone, forcing you to rewrite the whole comment.

It seems to happen mostly on longer comments when the app have spent some time in the "comment" state. It's possible that leaving the app (not closing it) and reopen the window is part of what triggers the bug.

Android version 9, the bug has been persistent through multiple versions of the app, including the latest version available at the play store.

1

Liking/ upvoting posts marks as read on refresh

Noticed this the other day, if you upvote a post without opening it, it will be marked as read on a refresh. I upvote posts in c/asklemmy that have an interesting question, but not many comments, so that I'll remember to open them later, but I noticed posts I never opened were being flagged as read when I went looking for these posts.

2

Local and All show up thrice in the sidebar

In the sidebar you can choose Subscribed/Local/All in the top bit, and then again in the comms list.

On top of this, Local and All show up twice in the comms list on one of my accounts.
