Palestinian group Hamas have taken a number of hostages into Gaza
Seventeen British nationals including children are dead or missing in Israel after attacks by Palestinian militant group Hamas.
The BBC has cited an official source, after the previous estimate from the weekend’s attack was originally placed at “more than 10”.
Only a few names have been confirmed among the deceased, including 20-year-old Nathanel Young, who had been a serving solider with the Israeli Defence Forces.
I feel horrible for these victims, but can we stop counting people from specific countries like that makes it more important? People DIED, it doesn't matter where they're from.
I get where you are coming from, but I think this in part is done so people don't just ignore it all. Not on our land, what do we care sort of thinking. Not saying I like that this would be needed to bring it closer to home for others, but that I can see that it would for some. We saw it with 9/11 as well as I would see other countries talk about how many they lost that day. Or when a plane goes down.
I remember reading some article on Reddit some years ago where the author had some calculation on how much a foreigner’s life was worth compared to an American.
But that’s all I remember.
Assuming this website is based in the UK (.uk), it’s pretty common to report things based on how it relates to the country it’s based from. Just like any other country’s news bodies would highlight any of its citizens that were involved.
I think it's worth continuing because it puts pressure on these governments to decry the events. Its real easy for a government to stay quiet on these issues when it's foreign citizens killing other foreign citizens. Its much harder when your own countries people are killed and your just pretending nothing happened or trying to avoid discussing it.
We shouldn't be visiting or doing business with such awful colonial institutions. We have no business going there. But I do feel sorry for any loss of life.

In a statement his family said: “We are grieving the loss of our son and brother, Bernard Cowan, who was horrifically murdered on Saturday during the surprise terrorist attack on Israel by Hamas.
Also believed to have been killed is British photographer Daniel Darlington, whose sister shared on social media that he had been “murdered by terrorists” in Nir Oz on Saturday morning.
He died alongside his German friend Carolin, with his last Instagram posts showing the pair cycling and taking photographs of the sunset in southern Israel.
Shelley Darlington said: “Only days before he was riding his bike, laughing, taking photos of sunsets and enjoying life’s simple pleasures in our beautiful kibbutz.
“He was meant to leave for Tel Aviv the night before but decided to stay one more day to explore the kibbutz with his friend – a decision that has irrevocably changed all our lives forever, and one that cost him his life.”
“He last spoke to his mother at 4.30am UK time, saying he saw rockets [fired from Gaza] and that he even filmed it,” Daniel Aboudy, a friend of Mr Marlowe, told The Independent from London.
