[Pre-release] v0.5.0-2
  • Awesome! I was confused with what I was seeing when tapping a user’s profile and didn’t realize it was a bug because I don’t usually do that and I just noticed recently. Glad it’s already fixed with this update!

  • What are some good ways to find musician friends?
  • I know these platforms are looked down upon here, but I’ve connected (at least online) with local musicians in my area through my city’s subreddit and discord. Chances are there is a sub and/or discord channel for musicians in your area. There are also facebook groups if you’re on there too.

  • Klay signs with Mavs
  • Is that a good deal? Green definitely has been improving and has greatly increased his 3p% this past season. Sure Klay is still good (albeit streaky) on offense, but he's cooked on defense. That won't work well with Luka and Kyrie not being plus defenders. Green is a hustler and at least tries on both ends of the floor.

  • What is your favorite though provoking movie?
  • Probably Arrival. If you knew how your life will play out from start to finish, would you change it knowing you will never experience everything the same from the point that you change it, thus not only avoiding bad/regrettable events, but also your most cherished ones.

  • Why don't low birth-rate countries make immigration to their country easier?
  • You understand wrong. I am an immigrant myself and literally experienced what I said. I merely recounted my own experience and the hoops I had to go through to be admitted into the country and be allowed to stay permanently. I have first hand experience of what the USCIS requires and checks in order to be granted work visas and the entire lengthy and expensive process to get permanent residency if you’re coming from a third world country. You are literally asked in application forms if you’ve ever applied for government benefits and how much debt you currently have, because that raises flags for them. You also have to prove your skills by showing evidence of the work you’ve done and what special skills or knowledge you have that a local can’t otherwise do. I’ve been denied a visa once just because the consular officer wasn’t convinced that my skills were special enough. It was a long drawn out process just to get admitted in. Oh and you also need to undergo a medical exam because they want to make sure you don’t have any serious issues that can potentially make you a burden to the healthcare system.

So before accusing someone of arrogance and bigotry, make sure you actually know where the person is coming from. I am not against immigration at all. I am merely explaining how the government picks and chooses who to admit into the country through their standard immigration processes. Show me a first world country that doesn't have those requirements (except for asylum seekers). I'll wait.

  • Work from home
  • Same. My manager works in another country and he told me that it doesn’t matter where I work from because from his perspective I’m a remote employee wherever I sit.

  • Would you consume your own content?
  • I publish my music online. Since I make that kind of music because I like that genre, then I’m pretty optimistic I will like it if it wasn’t me who made it. As for comments on lemmy, reddit, etc., no so much; but I have given advice from time to time that people appreciated based on their replies. Usually it’s about music, cooking, and movies.

  • Why don't low birth-rate countries make immigration to their country easier?
  • Because most low birth-rate countries are first-world countries, and they generally want to only accept people who can contribute to their society and not be freeloaders to the social system. This means they need to filter out the people that come in, and being first-world countries, there is no shortage of people trying to get in. Sometimes they want low-skill, not-highly educated people just for the cheap labor, but not the person actually staying permanently, hence temporary worker visas. If a foreigner really wants to stay permanently, they then need to ensure that you are educated, able to support yourself long term, do background security checks, and make sure you agree to integrate as you mentioned in the OP.

  • Recent IOS Beta updates have no test notes

Anyone know what's up with the recent beta updates on IOS? I think the last 4-5 updates had no test notes whatsoever.

    [RECIPE] Sushi Bake

Since there was some curiosity about what a sushi-bake is, here's my own recipe for it. Sushi-bake is basically a "deconstructed" sushi roll where the ingredients are layered instead of rolled then baked in the oven. There are different variations of how it's made, so this is my take on it. Apologies if I don't have exact measurements of portions, as I just wing it and base it on the taste.

    Ingredients:

    • Sushi rice (regular white rice is fine if you don't have sushi rice, but add a bit more water when cooking to make it more moist).

    • Rice vinegar.

    • Any protein of your choice like crabstick, tuna, or salmon; shredded.

    • Fruit/vegetable. Cucumber, mango, avocado, or any other ingredients you'd like to add to your sushi; sliced and cubed.

    • Japanese mayo (i.e. kewpie).

    • Sriracha. In my case, I used a gochujang-based hot sauce with truffle oil.

    • Furikake.

    • Sesame oil (optional).

    • Sugar/sweetener (optional).

    • Mozarella cheese (optional).

    Recipe:

    1. Cook sushi rice as directed.

    2. Mix your protein, veggies, and fruit in a bowl with Japanese mayo and sriracha.

    3. Mix the cooked sushi rice with a few tablespoons of rice vinegar and a bit of sugar (optional). I personally don’t put sugar because I find the rice vinegar enough for flavor.

    4. Line a baking pan with foil. You can also do without, I'm just lazy with washing.

    5. Grease the pan with a little sesame oil.

    6. Add a base layer of sushi rice on the baking pan and flatten it thoroughly.

    7. Add a layer of your protein/veggie/fruit mix on top of the rice.

    8. Sprinkle a layer of furikake.

    9. Optional: Since I like to put cheese on everything, add a layer of shredded mozarella.

    10. For aesthetic purposes, draw alternating diagonal lines of mayo and sriracha, and top it off with another sprinkling of furikake.

    11. Bake at 350F for 15-20 minutes.

To eat, slice it into square bites. You can eat it as is with chopsticks or a fork/spoon, or use Nori to scoop it up.

[US] Why don't city limits just follow county lines or vice versa?

My city's limits covers one county and half of the county north of it. Why don't they just follow the same lines on the map, with either the county following the city, or the city following the county line?

Lack of content and behind-the-scenes stuff from all-star weekend

Not sure if I'm just not looking at the right places, but did anyone else notice that there's a lack of video content released from this year's all-star weekend? I remember from previous all-star events there were a ton of videos of players interacting on the court and locker room, as well as behind-the-scenes videos. The all-star practice was also officially televised. This time around most of the interesting content I've seen are from people in the arena taking videos from their phones, not official ones.

Getting logged out when switching between wifi and data

Does anyone else get logged out when switching between wifi and mobile data? I notice when leaving the house (or coming home) and my phone switches between wifi and data (and vice versa), the app asks me to login again. I have the beta/testflight version.

Which one is more energy/fuel efficient to cool the inside of the car: lower thermostat + lower fan speed, or slightly higher thermostat + higher fan speed?

On a hot day and traveling in a car, which method of keeping the occupants comfortable with the A/C is more energy and fuel efficient?

    • Set the thermostat to a lower temperature and keep fan speed to the lowest setting

    • Set the thermostat to a slightly higher temperature and compensate by setting the fan to a higher speed so you can feel cool enough with the breeze

Did lemm.ee block the lemmit.online and zerobytes bots?

I’m subscribed to a couple of communities where those bots post regularly. I noticed a drop in content recently and realized I haven’t seen those bots for the past week. I’m trying to figure out where they got blocked and was wondering if our instance blocked them. Anyone have an idea?

‘Dune: Part Two’s First 10 Minutes Shown at CCXP

I had the opportunity to see the first 10 minutes of Part 1 in an advanced teaser back then. I wish they also did the same this time around, as this seems to be an exclusive event instead of opening it to a limited number of audiences from the public.

DoH blocker for IOS: Mullvad or Aha DNS Blitz

So I prefer to use a DNS blocker (DoH) on my IOS devices to block ads, malware, and trackers. For the longest time I’ve been using Aha DNS Blitz because it allows you to choose the exact filter lists you want to enable. Recently I saw Mullvad now has their own DoH service as well and I’m trying it out now. It’s not as customizable as you can only choose a combination of the general categories (ads, malware, tracking, social, gambling, etc.). On the other hand, Mullvad runs everything on RAM now and they are very transparent of their methods and have a proven track record.

I’d like to get the community’s opinion on which of the two you prefer and why.

Narwhal v2 now shows your api usage

Narwhal released v2 of their app today to the general public. As a loyal narwhal user before I moved to lemmy, I still had the app on my phone so I checked it out.

The app now shows your api usage so you know how much you’ll need to pay based on your average browsing habits. It’s making users uncomfortable because they can’t browse carefree knowing the counter goes up every time they do something in the app.

Such a shame because the new app version is beautiful, but look at what reddit is forcing app devs to do just so their app can live on.
