Is this a normal way for a cat to sleep? He is a rescue and I’m pretty sure his hips were injured at some point, so I always thought that this was related. But we’ve just gotten a kitten who started doing it too.
I don't think there's a position cats don't sleep/lie/sit in.

My wife thought this was our cat and when I said it was a post she tried to show me where in our house I took it.

I think it would be weirder if your cat DIDN'T have some unusual way they like to sit.

We have a ginger that looks practically identical and he lays like this often. He likes to stretch those back leggies out.
This would be akin to you sticking a leg out of the covers for that cool air.
My cat likes to let his leg hang off in the distance. We call it the "chicken leg"
