When you realize that your existence is pointless
Like, why am I here?
For over 15 years now I feel like my life has lost any direction, and this years things had gotten only worse. I could get used to have zero friends and social life, and accepted the fact that I'll remain eternally invisible to women, call it incel behaviour idgaf, I know women don't want weak people like me, but that's me, I won't change, that's my nature, my soul... Hell I realised that I couldn't ever leave my mom's home because I know I couldn't live alone...
But now also being unemployed for almost a year now, after leaving my abusive, underpaid job full of bullies and tyrannic boss. Why my life had to end like this? I'm not a good person, I'm aware but I've seen awful people with money, women, married and kids, car, with their own house... And I can't get a single thing? If I going to suffer like this until I get old and truly completely alone and homeless I'm better dying of a heart attack now.
Please, don't give me advice (oh you need to fight, you make your own life worth it, self fulfilling prophecy) I've heard all that before and it won't help me. I just needed to get this thing out of me, my "real" life is over.
And please don't try to be a bully here. My comment is about my life, it shouldn't bother you in any way.

Life is somehow boring now that I got nothing to do/ work on
I don't know how to explain this but now that my house is "done", my wedding is over I am just bored.
Before that I was in stress and always wanted to give up. But now I am staring at a wall with coffee in my hand and playing video games waiting for the next vacation somewhere.
Is this normal?

What was your favorite album when you were ten years old?
I’m listening to Audioslave’s self titled. It’s still perfect. What’s yours?

I re-discovered a video library on an old laptop
I turned on an old laptop and found a fairly sizable library of videos I accrued between 2013 and 2019. It contains 329 hours of content across 38 movies and 464 TV episodes (of 29 different shows), and that's even after removing 42 corrupted video files (about 14G). There are also 64 standalone videos, mostly stuff I downloaded off YouTube for the purpose of watching on the road (but that's just 10 hours of the content).
I'm kinda wondering what I should do with that. It's 230G, so not really small, but I'm not short on storage space.
A big chunk of the content is current events, like The Daily Show and Colbert Report (including an interview with Bill Cosby from 2014, yikes...) Would you re-watch that?

Beginner strength trainer here who just increased the weight of her dumbbells.
Hello y'all. I am taking a break in the midst of my workout and thought to write this post. I recently increased the weight of the two dumbbells I'm using, so now both of them are 6kg.
I definitely notice the difference from 5kg each, and even though I can't finish all of my workouts because of exhaustion, I don't want to beat myself up too much over it. I'm getting stronger each time I workout, and eventually I'll be able to finish them all fully.
Anyway, I've been strength training for a few weeks now and I notice a difference. Maybe it's delusion or wishful thinking, but I like my body better now, I feel stronger and more energetic. I've been thinking about picking up boxing as well, and my dad just ordered one of those big boxing sacs that you punch (like you see frustrated husbands doing in shows), so that's fun.
Y'all got any exercise stories to share or advice for beginners like myself? Any other women in here who strength train? Would be fun to hear from y'all, no matter who you are. (: Cheers!

Local LAN\co-op best moments
What are your stories? I'm sad I haven't had such parties for a long time, and a lack of PC games with co-op doesn't help it too. But I still treasure these times me and my friends wasted whole nights playing high on cola and doritos, and I wonder if me, now an adult, can reproduce a bit of that with my current non-playing friends, their spouses, children, etc. Just a general nostalgia and 'what-to-play-now' thread.

I unintentionally deleted the original post, sorry.

What song have you listened to a lot recently?
I came across Self Control - Laura Branigan again recently, and that would be my pick

The weekend is too short
When I was single the weekends seemed quite long. I would sleep half of the Saturday, watch some TV shows, clean a bit and sometimes visit some friends. And Sunday evening I would play bass in my metal band. Nice and easy.
But now that I have a family and small children there is never time to do anything. The kids always need something, food, diper, entertainment, make them sleep, clean up. Wash the dishes, wash the clothes etc. Once we're done with them it's 9pm, we try to watch a movie and my partner falls asleep of exhaustion within 20 minutes. I try do watch it to the end so I can tell her the summary in the morning.
It's totally regarding to have kids but I wish the weekend was one day longer.

Should I start a community about Analog Horror?
Here's the thing: I'm on lemmy.world, and there's already a community about Analog Horror called "[email protected]." I've posted there frequently over the past year. However, subscriber and vote engagement are quite low (ofk is not about the likes but i enjoy to have a minimum ammount of people checking the comunity posts to discuss a bit in the comment). Also the community mod seems to not be around anymore. Now I had a similar situation with another horror group before and since I've started my version on lemmy.world I was indeed able to find a small but active group of subscribers. Should I do the same? Would you be interested in this?
Btw.
> Analog horror is a subgenre of horror fiction and an offshoot of the found footage film genre, said to have originated online during the late 2000s and early 2010s with web series such as No Through Road, Local 58, Gemini Home Entertainment, and Marble Hornet.

I rewatched The Hobbit in HD.
And apparently they are awesome. Metro Goldwyn Mayer - again - did some great filming.
When I initially watched the hobbit parts, I was mad about not respecting the books. They kinda did, I know realize. In HD, and in native language these movies are a piece of art.
I had a very strong opinion about how bad they were - but I reconsidered. Even the lead actor Bilbo I opposed - He did a remarkable act. Anyhow. American influence hits hard, once it does. Started at some safari show with a lion named Clarence. Don't know the name but I loved it - as fair as I can remember.
Love all, but Some.

Do you take a shower after you swim?
If you swim in a pool that's correctly chlorinated, is it necessary from your perspective to shower after you get out of the pool?

You found the future, Biology is a completed engineering corpus. What do you modify about yourself?
Let's say there are consequences where all genetic alterations are difficult to sandbox and largely irreversible during an extended, but still finite lifetime of around half a millennia.
Rules:
- changes will be passed down to your offspring
- any change may make you sterile, but large changes will always make you sterile
- alterations are most effective when done under the age of 20 and do not fully manifest for decades
- if you screw up your code it might be deadly
- biology as an engineering corpus is several orders of magnitude more complex than computer science was in the 21st century – screwing up is very easy
- any adaptation present in evolutionary life is technically possible to someone dumb enough to try and brilliant enough to pull it off
These are the rules, what do you change?

Is funny the way I discovered music that I like sometimes...
About 3 years ago I was watching a hentai, I can't even tell you the name, probably was something confusing, it was about a school of girls only and was overall kinda boring, too much story and less action, it was all girls on girls, whatever... BUT after a few minutes in realised the ost was all classical music. And one piece in particular played at some point and I was like... "Wait a minute, this must be popular or something I'm sure I've heard that melody before, like some Beethoven shit type beat"
Later I discovered that melody was "Clair de lune" by Debussy, a very iconic music piece that I'm sure some of you had heard before, even if you don't know the name. How the hell that ended up in a hentai I'll never know, that blud Debussy was cooking with that piano, became one of my favourites with moonlight sonata and Overture... Whatever was called. The names are weird man.

Saying goodbye tomorrow to a couple of guys I was close to.
In the final stages of moving from the deep south to a northern state.
I used to run a shop under a corporation. Long story, but I integrated the shop, and built something beautiful. I had to use a temp service to do a lot of my hiring, I hired lots of black folks because they were undervalued and I could give them a good environment and pay. Was just starting to hire women. COVID and Qanon blew it the fuck up.
Tomorrow I'll be having lunch with two of my former crew. One of them is the only man I've ever called brother. He was my neighbor and best friend for years. I would have trusted him to help me hide a body. The other feller was a kind and gentle guy, had a bad divorce but was a teddy bear, was on the road back up.
They both went down the rabbit hole real bad.
I miss who they were and the shop we had. It was fucking jazz. I protected all of them from corporate. We made shit happen. I fought to get them more money and got fucked over myself.
I've lost my parents, my grandfather, my aunts and uncles and cousins to the insanity. Thank jeebus my grandmothers and one grandfather are dead.
Tomorrow I'm going to hug my brother and tell him goodbye. He isn't really my brother anymore. I don't trust him. I love him. He's not the man I knew.
It hurts a lot. It broke my heart.
*Edit
Lunch was good but rough. My son got to see me cry for the first time, afterwards, so I guess that was good.
Then my closest former friend came over this evening. Texted my girl:
"Holy fuck. Joe has some sort of grandpa weed that he he'd be saving. I hit once and I'm all fucked up. They smoked a whole blunt. Then I learned about how taking ivermectin was a good preventative and that Susan is actually a Mayan priestess discovered through astral projection."

RTFM is disappearing from our language
We no longer say RTFM, read the fucking manual, anymore. I wonder why that is. Is it because more and more projects are moving all documentation to discord?
Some projects still have manuals... But there seems to be less expectation people will familiarize themselves with manuals anymore. I wonder why

Quick reminder that this community is about casual conversation. If there is one thing that Lemmy has no shortage of, it's places to have political conversations, so please don't post them here
Basically, title
Also, as a reminder, the third rule of the community is
> Avoid controversial topics such as politics or societal debates
For places that can host political/societal discussions:
As always, feel free to discuss this rule in the comments if you think it should be reviewed.
-
Just a reminder because this seems to be an issue
Unless on usurped or deceptive pretenses, I do not encourage the act of circumventing bans, and other people in charge would say the same.
That said, if someone gives off the vibes that they're in the business of it, it cannot be enforced as if it were an exact science. It can only be dissuaded based on certain definitive details. We kindly ask if you may give the benefit of the doubt, and if people (not us) have the authority to do so, they will act.
Let people higher up take care of these matters. Do not harass people or vent at them over such matters, and report people cautiously, not based on whims. Or as a list of rules once said...
"Remember the human" is as good a rule here as anywhere. Thanking all for their patience.

Everything is going to be alright
With all the negative stuff going on (Trump's failed assassination) and everything, it is natural to get absorbed in the doomerism. Of course, pretending that nothing scary is happening isn't the best thing to do. Scary stuff is happening, and we need to take action.
That being said, I personally trust Americans to do the right thing. Trump won't win, and America won't go fascist. This is because good people will fight and win. Same goes with other countries (France and the UK for example).
Leaving politics aside, there's a lot of hope ahead. Science and Tech is advancing, life expectancy is increasing, investment in transit is increasing, countries r going greener, etc. Many cancer therapies r coming out (see the cancer vaccines for instance). Many cities have done some much needed land rezoning, due to which affordable housing will be a thing, 15 minute cities will be more and more common and so on.
The future is looking good, exciting stuff is happening and EVERYTHING WILL BE ALRIGHT.
Again, a little fear is good. Fear is what prevented early humans from being killed by predators, and it is what will prevent bad things from happening to us in the future. However, letting it consume our lives is a little counter intuitive.

Who wins a three way deathmatch? Ira Glass, Stephen Dubner, or Guy Raz?
Alternatively, does the universe collapse in on itself because they’re actually the tripartite sonic manifestations of a single three faced god?

Why aren't there adult only flights?
Honestly, I will never wrap my head around how people can happily bring infants on any flight where you can expect people to try and sleep, it's incredibly lucky if they don't spend some of it screaming their heads off—I would be mortified if my choices were preventing hundreds of people from sleeping. But I'm not going to rant too hard about that.
Why on earth hasn't any airline started marketing adult-only flights?
It seems like a complete no brainer to me, I would choose it every time and pay extra for it.
Disclaimer: I may or may not be on a 36h day with only an hour of sleep right now

My mom (55) just got into PC gaming and it's very cute and amusing
So my mom has been saying for awhile how she wished she could play Hogwarts legacy, and my older sister just replaced her gaming PC. So my sister sent her old pc to my mom. Nothing crazy, but meets minimum system requirements! My mom is now kind of speed running learning about gaming and it's been amusing. I just think these are adorable.
-
She complained that she couldn't find the game for sale for PC anywhere, she could only find it for XBOX and PS. She was looking on amazon, and I had to point her towards steam, and help her setup an account for steam.
-
She happened to purchase it while it was on sale and she was super confused why it was randomly on sale! Had to explain how steam works. She's disabled and the $60 was the extent of her fun money for the month, so getting it on sale was a huge deal to her.
-
Complaining at how long it took to download the game off wifi when she was ready to play RIGHT NOW. She kept asking if we could use an Ethernet cable to make it go faster, but her PC was like 40 feet from the nearest jack and we didn't have a long enough ethernet cable (No I wasn't driving home to my house to look for one, and no I wasn't buying her one. Love you momma! You gotta wait!)
-
She realized she hates mouse and keyboard, so used the money she saved from the sale to buy a little controller from walmart.
-
She talked about how much she likes that because she's on "story mode" she can skip puzzles/challenges she thinks are stupid. Considering there are games I never beat as a kid because of a specific mini game/challenge I couldn't beat, I resonated with that. Back when we were kids if there was a quick time event you couldn't beat, we quit the game!
-
A few weeks later she talked about how she was super happy to finally find a youtuber that would give walk through/tips/advice on how to do things in a not annoying way. The one she likes are basically "Here is a 30 second clip of doing this specific thing in this room". She is not a fan of 30 minute lets plays with intros/outros.
-
Complaining about long load times between rooms, and quests that make her go through multiple loading zones. No comment, she's just right to complain.
All her revelations were super relatable and I just thought it was cute that at an older age she went through modern gaming transition in a few weeks, and hit on emotions we all basically hit.
