  • It's not like the S&P500 committee is going to make wild and crazy decisions based on a hunch. It's still very much based on replacing older shrinking companies with newer more vigorous representatives in the same industry.

  • Helsinki Commission paper calls for reconsideration of US strategy toward Russia
  • The Helsinki Commission is an interesting US congressional organization, consisting of members from the Senate, House and the Executive branch.

Even more interesting, is it's currently chaired by a Republican, Joe Wilson, aka the "You lie!" guy whom you would expect to be MAGA partisan.

  • France's Le Pen denies wrongdoing as she and her party go on trial accused of embezzling EU funds
  • When they get their orders and talking points directly from Russia's FSB, they don't have to hire legislative staff to work for their constituents, do research on issues, and solve problems.

They can use the money for political campaigning instead. No wonder they're successful!

    Good thinking! /s

So the setup for the Workshop Battle begins...

There's an odd thing where the team leaves on a ship, leaving Khun and Dan behind, then Wangnan wakes up, and they load on the ship for real to go to the test.

I'm flipping through the manhwa to try and figure out what went on there...

edit: Apparently it just happens like that in the manhwa. After Khun wakes up with the notification that they're invited to the Workshop Battle, we just see his team on the shuttle home exhausted or asleep, having passed the test offscreen.

    that wonderful fresh roasted aroma
  • A standard vented coffee bag has... a vent. So some smell is expected.

I just keep old coffee bags around if I need to store grounds or separate smaller quantities of beans.

I believe the objective is to reduce beans' and grounds' exposure to air, to reduce oxidation and flavor oil evaporation, so a standard coffee bag is the best way. Just squeeze out most of the air as you're resealing it.

Storing in airtight jars leaves too much air, IMO.

  • AeroPress Premium
  • It's a different brewing method using pressure through a filter, resulting in a more fragrant brew.

I use a recipe that just brews in an inverted Aeropress for 10 seconds, so it comes out faster too, although most recipes call for brewing for longer.

But the quick method is great if I'm in a hurry that morning.

One downside to Aeropress is consuming paper filters, but I also have an aftermarket reusable metal mesh filter, and it works great.

Another downside is the dreaded "inverted Aeropress" disaster, which I recently experienced. I hold it by the plunger now ;-)

I alternate using both french press and Aeropress to keep from getting bored with my coffee.

  • AeroPress Premium
  • For some reason, I get the opposite effect. I feel that the resulting brew from my plastic Aeropress loses more heat than my glass french press, so I have to preheat my coffee mug if I'm using my AP.

Giving it some thought, the effect may not be the AP material itself, but the heat loss from the high surface to volume ratio of the droplets as they come out of the filter, as opposed to the stream as the liquid is poured out in a single thick stream out of the french press.

i.e. A glass Aeropress may not reduce temperature loss significantly over plastic.

But my desire for a glass Aeropress is more for reducing plastic use, and risk of shedding microplastics into foods that I consume.

  • Changing coffee beans: What do you do when there aren't enough beans to make a final brew?
  • I pour my old grounds out of my storage bag into a small bowl, pour my new grounds into my storage bag, then I pour the old grounds on top of my new grounds, and they should get used first.

I don't shake my storage bag to mix the old grounds and the new evenly.

SF mayor assigns team to help city's troubled public schools

    > San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced Sunday that she’s lending some of her own staff to help the city’s troubled public school district, whose top official narrowly avoided termination just hours earlier.

    > Hours after the San Francisco Unified School District’s governing board wrapped up a meeting in which it considered firing Superintendent Matt Wayne, accepted the mayor’s offer.

    > In a news release Sunday afternoon, Breed said she’s carving out $8.5 million for the School Stabilization Team to help SFUSD overcome its dysfunction.

    > Money for the mayor’s effort comes from a 2022 measure that unlocked city money to help SFUSD with so-called Student Success Funds for urgent needs. That’s on top of the $100 million the city already provides annually to its K-12 district.

    > The number of people sleeping outdoors dropped to under 3,000 in January, the lowest the city has recorded in a decade, according to a federal count. > > And that figure has likely dropped even lower since Mayor London Breed — a Democrat in a difficult reelection fight this November — started ramping up enforcement of anti-camping laws in August following a U.S. Supreme Court decision. > > Homelessness in no way has gone away, and in fact grew 7%, to 8,300 in January, according to the same federal count. > > But the problem is now notably out of the public eye, raising the question of where people have gone and whether the change marks a turning point in a crisis long associated with San Francisco.

Farrell's response regarding this incident doesn't make sense.

Review: Blue Lock - Episode Nagi

The movie just recently became available for streaming, so I got a chance to watch it.

Mostly a recap of the first 2 seasons, but from Nagi and Reo's point-of-view.

    I felt disappointed by this:

Nagi isn't the most captivating or motivated character. He has a one-dimensional personality and this movie does nothing to change that.

He spends most of the movie moaning about what a hassle it is to do just about anything: Playing soccer, brushing his teeth, even eating.

Incredible football super powers aside, he just isn't interesting enough to be the subject of a 90 minute movie.

It was nice to watch the group elimination stage from Team V's point of view, but it's presented almost as quick highlights, with maybe the best part being against Nico's Team Y, although more screen time is given to their fateful match against Isagi's Team Z.

And that's a problem, because we already saw what happened in V vs Z in excruciating detail in the TV episodes.

Assuming anyone who is investing time and money to watch this has already watched the show already knows exactly what happens, so what was the value add here?

Although the production did animate just about everything from scratch for the movie, there was disappointingly little actual new story.

And the movie production quality was also not that great.

The TV show is famous for its Powerpoint-style graphics, and the movie was only slightly above that.

It felt like a missed opportunity to "fill in the gaps" of the action that's happening between the Powerpoint slides.

To sum up, it feels like a lot of poor production and concept decisions.
